November 2009 Mastectomy

We're back from my son's senior class trip to Florida. We flew on Tuesday morning EARLY and returned LATE Saturday night! It was a great time, even though a little on the cool side. We were actually able to watch a Delta 4 rocket launch from Kennedy Space Center! Also went to Epcot and the Holy Land Experience. Lots and lots of good memories - and lots of tiredness now! And many details to pick up and continue on!!!
Thinking of you all!
-
What's the Holy Land Experience?
-
Hi Jane - it's in Orlando. It's like another theme park, but with a Christian perspective. And the message is salvation, not money or thrills! They have a fountain that splashes different patterns in time to Christian music. You can visit the Tabernacle where "Moses" explains about the lever, the Ark of the Covenant, the sacrifices, etc. The Scriptorium has many ancient artifacts that are explained as you walk from room to room. There is a miniature city of Jerusalem - the people are maybe an inch high, but all of the details are there - the Temple, Herod's palace, the gates, the Pool of Bethesda and so-o-o much more. A docent explains the various places within the city. There is also a Passion Play which portrays VERY realistically the trial and suffering and death of Jesus, followed by the empty tomb. Another play is called "Forgiven" and is also very realistic. All workers throughout the area are in costume for that time period. The markets, the Temple area and all architecture is extrememly well done. The message of love and forgiveness and salvation is very clear. We were so glad we spent the day there!
How are you doing?
-
2Hands, hi! Your trip to Florida with the Holy Land experience sounds great! I'm envious!
JaneM, are you scheduled for your colonoscopy now? (I've just caught up reading about you two.) I've been busy with school. The end of the semester is nearing and I'll be so glad! I am full-time this semester (for the health ins.) and I have found that after 3 surgeries -all this past fall- that I am wiped! I'm doing well, but it is a lot for me! I believe that, while I'm in great shape, it must take a while to really recooperate after a surgery.
I'm with you, JaneM, I, too, am so tired of dr.visits and appts., etc. Do you all find that you're just tired of the whole cancer thing? I mean..it almost feels good to not think about any of it as I did during the fall. At that time, I could think of nothing else! Does that make any sense?
I made a visit with a cancer nutritionist during my March spring break. She is connected with the hosptial and I learned SO much that I didn't know. If you like, I can write down a lot of what I learned-- to share it with you all.
-
My colonoscopy is scheduled for May 18. I am SOOO looking forward to it!
-
hI Jane- Are you being sarcastic or are you really looking forward to it?
-
I'm being sarcastic. I really don't want to have it and I've put it off way too long.
-
Jane - Wish I could be there to coach you through the colonoscopy! You'll feel so glad to be finished and know you're done! I'm so-o-o glad you are scheduled! After the prep, the worst part is the IV, and the waiting........ And maybe not being able to do anything the rest of the day??????
dmorgan - so glad to hear an update. I've been wondering how you're doing! I'd love to hear what you learned if you have the time to share! I've always thought we eat fairly healthy, but I know we can improve also!!! Are you a teacher? I forget if you've already said that and don't have the time to read back! If so - what grade? I'm doing some tutoring for a reading and spelling program - it's so fascinating to watch the children learn! Have you heard from MsMarilyn? She doesn't seem to post much anymore - I'm hoping it's the busy return to normal life for her too!!
-
I would like to know more about the nutrition aspect, too!
-
Jane - the prep (drinking that vile stuff) is really the worse part. I had my colonoscopy last week and was driven to rads right after. (Joyyyy - sarcasm there). Thankfully, the results were perfectly normal.
Dmorgan - I would love to hear what you've learned!!
Vickie -
Praise the Lord - He has risen indeed! Easter Blessings to all!
-
2Hands: Yes, I teach--college math. Love it!
MsMarilyn and I are friends on FB, so I keep up with her that way. Poor thing--she is in the midst of chemo and has had some really hard times!!!!! I think she has 2 more treatments. Her SEs have been tuff! Her faith in God is so strong and she remains positive. So her life has not returned to normal. We need to pray for her daily.
Are you or JaneM on FB?
I hope you had a good Easter. He has risen!

Here are some things I learned from the cancer nutritionist:
White tea is better than green tea for the antioxidants. She suggested I drink 3 cups a day! You can cook with it too--like in oatmeal, etc.
The best kind of nut is brazil, then walnut, then almond. She suggested I eat several of those a day.
You already know that the best kind of "cancer-fighting" vegetables are brussel sprouts, caulifower, and brocolli. She said that brocolli sprouts are good--that 1/2 cup is equivalent to 2 cups of brocolli. Also I should eat one clove of garlic a day. Onions are good too. Ttry to eat 1/2 cup of spinach or kale daily. Greek yogurt is the best kind of yogurt.
Tumeric is a cancer-fighting spice (I guess it's a spice). You can also get it in capsule form. Selenium is good also.
As far as being estrogen + : no milk--use almond or rice milk instead. No flaxseed, soy anything, go easy on the fish oil--maybe 1000 mg daily. Have fish 2-3 times a week.
I asked her if the following were okay:
wheat germ? yes, good for iron
soy lethicin- yes, it's not really soy
niacin? yes
magnesium? yes
Can you have too much fiber? no
Can you have too much protein? Yes, too much is hard on the kidneys.
She said that the bottled salad dressings are garbage (my word, not hers). She suggested the following for a salad dressing: equal parts of olive oil and any kind of vinegar, minced garlic and lemon juice. I use that now; it's good! (refrigerate)
That's all I can remember right now. I knew some of this, but some of it I didn't know.
I guess we need to do all we can to be healthy!
Hope this helps you all.

I'm Jane Murphy on facebook.
-
I'm not on Facebook - still have reservations about that. But it would be so nice to keep up with all of you...... Anyone convince me of the necessity of signing up? My boys have been for some time but it sort of feels like I'd be spying on them to be their "friend", yet I'd love to follow their age group too......Time is also an issue......Hope everyone enjoyed their day yesterday. Tell MsMarilyn I'll keep praying for her!
-
2Hands-You have to get on FB! Your sons don't have to accept you as their friend...that way you can't "spy" on them. :-) I'm not "friends" with one of my sons. ;-)
OK, Jane, I'll invite you to be my friend. You better accept!! ;-)
-
It's 2:30am and I need to go to bed, but...know what I just did?
I went back to when this thread was first started and re-read all our writings. It really took me back. We really went through a lot and we really supported each other!
In a way, it seems SO long along and it 's only been 5 months.
Has anyone else done that? (re-read)
-
I haven't re-read this thread but it's always interesting to read the January, February, March Mastectomy threads! Every day, every month, other ladies are experiencing the same challenges that we did in November. In a way it seems a long time ago, and in other ways, it's hard to believe that it's been that long already! It's also interesting to compare my incisions. The left (from Nov.) is still pink, while the right (from Feb. 2009) is white. And the left was higher, but now they are almost equal. It's amazing to think that by Nov. the left will be white also. I've been doing alot of outside yard and garden work, and helped a friend scrub floors the other day. Yes, I get tired, but I'm so thankful that I can do the work again!
-
JaneM, I tried to find you on FB. There are many with your name on it. I clicked on every one of them, but no you. :-(

Hello Ladies!!
Sorry I haven't checked in lately I'm usually on Facebook more than anything lately.
And yes 2Hands4Meyou need to get on Facebook too!
It's a lot easier to keep in touch and thank you so much for all the prayers and thoughts!
I have some good news that I'd like to share with you all. Today (April 12) is my last chemo cycle! I'm so excited that I can't sleep.. lol It's been a long hard road but with the help from God, family and friends I've made it to the road of recovery. I'd like to thank all of my friends I've met on here because you've helped me in so many ways. I'm not going to have my implants placed until June sometime, I need a break from going back and forth to the hospital so much. I've lived with my TE's this long, what's a couple more months...LOL
Thank you dmorgan2 for keeping everyone updated on me! You're a blessing to me and for us all.
If I forgot anyone to thank personally please forgive me but know I haven't forgot you or what you've done for me during all this.
I'd like to keep in touch better with all of you so if your on Facebook my email is msmarilyn@ymail.com Let me know you're from here and I'll accept your invite.
God Bless you all and may your journey through this be eased by his love.
Marilyn

Busy, busy, busy! Our youngest son graduates from high school on May 12 - so there are many details to attend to between now and then!
So glad to hear that chemo is DONE for you MsMarilyn!
Facebook - still undecided. I'd love to keep up with what's going on in your lives, but still have so many ??????. I'm just not convinced that we need to be so transparent in such a public, global system.
One step at a time, everyone. God is always in control. Sometimes it takes daily (hourly?) surrender to let Him direct our lives! He does know best, so why do we try to keep taking back the control?
-
GREAT NEWS!
I'm having my exchange surgery today! It's been a long journey but I made it and I know all of you will as well. I can't wait to get rid of these ROCKS they call TE's and have soft FOOBS!
Marilyn
-
Love your news! How are you doing now? No more rocks?
Also love your new picture! You look great - and happy!
We need to keep getting the message out: even this really is do-able! It's not something we enjoy...it's HARD at the time.....but all things can be done with God's help!
-
I couldn't agree more that we need to spread the news that all things are possible with God!
Hugs and Loves going your way!
Marilyn
-
I agree! Marilyn, you DO look happy and good. That is a very good pic of you!! ;-)
-
aawww Thank you! I am very happy and feeling very good!!
-
Prepping for my colonoscopy tomorrow! One more test down
-
Good for you!!! This is the worst part, and some people say that even this is not that bad! It's the volume more than anything! Before I know it.....my 10 years will be up and it'll be time to do it again! Still, it's better than letting one of those little guys grow! I'll think of you tomorrow and pray that you will have a peaceful night tonight!
-
JaneM, if you prepped today, then the worst part's over!!
Let us know how it went!
