Confused about symptoms
Hello,
I am 24 years old. Although the beginning of my symptoms doesn't sound related to IBC, I will start at the beginning. A little over 3 weeks ago I noticed a faint quarter sized round area on my armpit. Upon feeling it I felt a pea sized lump that did not move under the skin that was tender. I got an appointment with my PCP 4 days later who suspected an infection, put me on antibiotics and scheduled a follow up in 2 days. The red area disappeared and at the follow up appointment with my PCP with the nurse practitioner, she felt that my lump had spread -sent me for an ultrasound of the right axilia and breast which came back negative and scheduled another follow up 3 days later with her and the Dr. I experienced burning mild sensations in my right breast and axilia randomly that entire weekend. That Monday the lump in my right axilia could not be felt, but the lymph node was still inflamed. Upon breast exam the Dr. felt cystic tissue on my right breast and referred me to a surgeon with no explanation and scheduled another follow up in 6 weeks. The week went on and I felt the same mild burning sensations in right axilia and breast.
The following week, I was sitting in class and began feeling an awkward and uncomfortable feeling that my nipples were getting hard. This persisted for about 30 minutes or so and I began feeling an intense burning sensation in both nipples and quickly radiated to both breasts. It was extremely intense and came without warning. I managed to get home and take aleve for the pain and sat and waited. After about 2 hours the pain became somewhate barable, but I felt as though my breasts had been punched multiple times and as though I had black and blue marks. I called PCP who referred me to my GYN the very next day which was this past Tuesday. Again, I saw the NP who had NO EXPLANATION for the horrible burning episode I had. She suggested nerve damage??? I have had no recent or any injury period relating to any of this but since her husband is a chiropractor, she said that could be a possibility. Upon examination she noticed I had crusty nipples, indicating previous discharge. She sent me for an ultrasound of the left breast and bloodwork to check my thyroid and pituitary gland because these are possible explanations for nipple discharge. My left breast ultrasound came back negative. I am still waiting for the bloodwork results. yesterday I experienced random burning sensations in bost breasts. Today I was sitting at home at the computer and I began feeling the same uncomfortable nipple hardening sensation that lasted approx. 20 minutes. It started out by feeling as though both nipples were getting hard. I lifted my shirt to check and they were not. (I understand this may sound odd, but I am keeping close track of what is going on with my body these days because of the pain) This hard nipple feeling lasted for about 20 minutes or so and then both nipples becan burning and the pain began to intensify, then spreading to both breasts as well. The burning pain was felt inside the breasts and I could not feel tenderness or any other thing associated with pain because the burning sensations were so intensified. I tried holding off on pain medicine to see what would happen and opted to do a mirror check to see if there were any changes during this episode. My left nipple looked as though it had an extra smaller nipple coming from the left upper side and was darker red in color (almost purple) and there is a piece of skin hanging from the other side that is tan in color. The aerola of the left breast looks puffy and has small fluid filled pimple looking things with reddish color around some of them and an irritated looking pinkish blotchy skin around where my aerola extends. The right breast had the exteded pinkish blotchy color on the top portion only and there was clear leakage found in the creases under my nipple twice only on the right side. When lifting my arm and putting it back down I notice dimpling area in the right breast. The burning sensation decreased and left my nipples feeling hard and sore and my breasts feel like they have black and blue marks all over them again. A mild burning sensation persisted for an hour or so after. It has now been about 3 hours since this has started and they blotchy areas are still noticible but the purple 2nd nipple looking inflammation has become less purple and big, but the tan looking skin flap is still hanging. The left breast aerola is still imflammed as well.
It is my understanding that IBC generally only presents in one breast, but I could be wrong. I called my GYN who told me she would fax a new symptom list to the surgeon to see if they could get me in any sooner. My main concern was getting me to someone who could address this awful burning pain ASAP.
I guess I'm wondering if these burning pain episodes have occured in anyone before? Looking up "breast pain" in general does not include detail on what I am experiencing. Has anyone here experienced painful burning sensations before?

Did you find anything out? I am having almost the exact same symptoms and am having a hard time finding anything to explain it.

Oddly enough these sound like the beginning symptoms I had before they were soooo visible. Note that I do NOT have IBC or any other malignancy, however, this began in 2007 and I am still trying to obtain a diagnosis.
It began with extreme nipple pain like I have never had. My first surgeon (of three) thought I was NUTS. Months after my breast turned red hot and I developed a swollen mass behind the nipple like a half moon. It was so very painful. Sonograms show NOTHING. Mammos showed a spiculated densityt hat compressed out (so nothing to worry about). Ductogram for bloody dishcarge showed some type of blockage. Biopsy showed chronic inflammation. 8 docs and no name to it and now my breasts (both) flare up constantly and I know what it is not... it is not cancer thank goodness. But the anxiety of dealing with a swolled red hot breast is almost unbearable.
Demand an answer... I was 28 when I went to the surgeon and she really dismissed me because of my age. Don't give up, even when you are frustrated to tears. If you do, you'll end up with a worst condition and really you are your best advocate.
Good luck to you!

Did your doctor mention the possibility of Paget's disease of the nipple? This is a rare form of cancer. It is very often associated with underlying breast cancer, but there are rare cases where it presents by itself. If there is no underlying breast cancer, it can be treated by lumpectomy (removal of the nipple/areola and breast tissue to good margins).

Dear all,
After living with these symptoms for 3 years without any impact or change in lump, breast size, shape...etc I went and had a FNAC and never in my thoughts had I thoughts of anything negative.
I did the FNAC and the report says suggestive of highly invasive carcinoma. (I do not have the result to write it exactly).
I did a chest x-ray that said
A well defined round shaped, opacity is seen projecting in the right lung base in the P.A view which is not well appreciated in the lateral view mostly representing the shadow of the nipple
Clear both lung fields and costophernic angles
Normal cardiace size and configuration
I did an ultra sound that said:
There is R breast well defined hypoechic smooth margins 2.3 X1.6 with horizontal merit. Picture of benign lesions. Free axillary's lymph nodes
Other abdomen, pelvic and stomach pictures are clean.
I did a full blood test and urine which all came normal and clean too.
My treating doctor is insisting that I do not have IC. The other doctors whom I traveled to, believe I need to act quickly and do the surgery... I am caught by surprise; I do not know what to do and do not know where to take it from.
Therefore I need the support of all the readers in this forum to help me and guide me, especially those who have passed by this experience.
- How come I have an IC and live with it for 3 years without causing any symptoms in my breast that cause me to worry to that extent.
- I had read that there are many cases of pathology reports suggesting invasive carcinoma but when done on excision biopsy it was benign. What are the chances of false positive false negative FNAC.
- I had read about other disease mimicking paget's disease to a great extent, that if not carefully monitored could lead to unnecessary surgery such as: syringmatous adenoma of the nipple, or papilloma, or nipple adenoma. When I spoke to the dr. about them and asked him, he said he never heard of this, and this is very rare. Does he mean I do not have chances for benign results.
- How can we compare the different findings of the U/S and the FNAC and the chest X-Ray?
- If diagnosed with paget's what are the treatment options I have. Is it lumpectomy, or mastectomy based on mass size given aboce.
- What are the survival rates for paget's disease.
- What other treatments would I have: chemo or radiation..etc
- Any thing that I need to know. I was told about exercise, nutrition and vitamin E supplements, and anti-oxidants is this true, has any cancer treating centers spoke about this and their positive impact on treatment.
I look for the support, patience, guidance and assistance from all of you. Please do not hesitate to share with me any piece of info that would be useful. Thanks

Polyana--I re-read your original post and your current one and I have 2 questions. What is FNAC-- I'm a nurse and I don't know what that acronym stands for. Second, your original post said you were going to a gyn doctor--and your recent post says other treating doctors....are any of them breast surgeons or an oncologist that specializes in breast cancer? That is who you need to go to if you are confused. Have you had a PET/CT or MRI? I would think that would be the next step before invasive surgery.
I know it all sounds so confusing and you are getting hit with differing opinions- yikes! Take one step at a time...get a definitive diagnosis then worry about the rest....
Hang in there
Hugs and blessings

Thanks Carole,
FNAC is fine needle aspiration cytology. I went to a surgeon, I think he is an oncologist or breast surgeon not sure.
My treating doctor where I live was insisting that I do an MRI. I happen to travel abroad and that's where I met this doctor who did the FNAC for me.
I was told that an MRI is more accurate than the FNA is that true, does it give a definit answer. What about U/S does it give any indications.
I am not sure as to what is my next step. I was told to do an exsicional biopsy and have it examed again. Is it true that if someone has cancer and it is touched by surgery, the cancer cells goes wild and start spreading very fast in the body

Hi there--I would think that a PET/CT or MRI would be the next step before another invasive biopsy or surgery. I think there are many hands in the fire so to speak as far as your care--you need to find one person and get a work-up and stick with it til a second opinion is needed.
As to your question re: the cancer cells going wild, I believe that is an old wives tale.
Hang in there
