IN NEED OF WEIGHT LOSS COACHING BUDDIES

One way I do "drink" a few extra calories is to make a soda of 1 part Italian pomegranate soda to about 4-5 parts water. Tons of flavor and about 30 calories.
As I come out of chemo, I do need to watch what I eat. Thanks Ryder for pointing out the need for protein. With chemo, I have needed a lot more earlier protein in the day than prior to maintain energy levels. This was particularly with AC. It is true of Taxol too, but far less critical. And I am more sensitive to empty sugar calories unless combined with protein and fat.
Eggs have been a godsend. I buy super organic ones which are tasty. Yes, I eat the yolks, because I love bright orange ones, and they are packed with nutrients. I try to eat two eggs if I have a long ride planned (two hours or more).
I love vegetables, so no problem at all. And fruit, but not juice very much. You might as well ask me to drink a glass of flavored corn syrup! In August, I can be found in hedge rows eating blackberries with both hands.
My challenge is how to make food a pleasure so I never feel deprived. I think that is key for long term weight management. Junk food is carefully designed so you never feel quite satisfied. A piece of great cheese on a few crackers will. So will a ripe bosc pear or a perfect golden delicious apple (both are perfect right now).
I try to cook most things from scratch to avoid hidden fat and also hidden salt. I am not that adament about whole grains. Love them, use them, eat them.....but some things are better with white flour. I did discover that a hazelnut flour and whole wheat crumble topping (with sugar, butter and leavening) is a wonderful for frozen mixed berries. Wonderful dessert, real fruit, fiber, nuts, whole grains. - Claire

Apple! Thanks for posting your info on grapefruit! Yikes! I am on Arimidex so I shouldn't eat grapefruit! Boo But glad you let me know, So Thank-you again. If anyone wants to read the "Cancer Journal for Clinicians" here is the link:
http://caonline.amcancersoc.org/cgi/content/full/57/6/321?etoc,
As my post will be down the road a bit from Apples here is the link she posted too
So ladies I really don't have time to post what I eat as I do that in my software but wanted to let you know I have already lost 7 lbs. I am eating on average the high end of 1300 calories and here and there 1250. I feel good and I am walking 3 days a week. Up from 2. So I will decide what I want to do next. My joints will be a problem with more walking so I am looking at Pilates at home or recumbent bike or maybe.....some yoga. Hmmmm Also, maybe just recumbent bike THEN add some floor work...... I will decide later.
ShanaGirl Thanks for the post on low glycemic foods I copied and pasted it for my files. What REALLY works for me but I don't alway do this. Is my green smoothies zap my sugar cravings. I had them two days in a row and BOOM no craving sugar. I was having them daily and just got tired of doing it. Here is what is in them. I fill the container of a vita mix which I realize not everyone has as it is a commercial grade blender but my son's girlfriend used a regular one, but good quality, so I fill blend up with organic spinach, 1 banana, 6 small strawberries, several pineapple tidbits with a glass of filtered water. This yields about 3 servings. This is sweet and taste nothing like spinach (which I love) you can replace spinach with other greens. Still yummy! Oh and by the way I use the above to replace a salad and have some protein form with it.
OK, so we are starting a new week here! Onward and upward!
Good luck! Happy biking, walking etc......

Congrats Susie, on your weight loss! Everyone is inspiring me with their healthy food choices-I had a large omelet at lunch with the works, so will have a smoothie for dinner made with kale, frozen berries, and 1/2 banana. I walked I'd say 3 miles today, and I met with a trainer last week to redo my workout for more challenge. Have a great week everyone!
-
cathmg Good on the green smoothie! Love Kale this way, never could figure out a way to eat it until the smoothies! Focus on good healthy food in the right amounts seems to be working for me!
-
Hey everyone!
Great job on the healthy choices. I was fortunate not gain any chemo weight, but do have 20-25 pre cancer pounds to lose, which I was trying to do before I was sidetracked with this journey. I have noticed that if I go under the 1300-1500 calories a day, I stop losing weight, as long as I stay in that calorie range I am losing 1ish pounds a week. We are working on switching over to mostly organic...but still tough with economics and choice. I am using alot more herbs for flavorings and since our meals are flavorful, we are getting satisfied sooner.
Here is one of our favorite recipes
Oven Garlic-Roasted Potatoes
Potatoes cut into pieces
Olive oil
Fresh garlic cloves (3-5 individual preferance)
Fresh rosemary
Sea salt
Tumeric
Bake 425 for 30-40 minutes
Oh, here's one for chicken...
Chicken breast
Jar of salsa
Can of black beans
(will add cilantro this summer)
Put in crock pot on low until chicken done.
Anyone else have simple recipes we can try...
-
I always thought the easiest thing is to just ROAST the bird. Lovely organic ones here in Washington State.
One chicken
Bunch of fresh herbs or herbs de provence
Dry vermouth
Put fresh herbs in cavity or sprinkle with herbs de provence. Roast at 325 for 20 minutes per pound. Baste with dry vermouth or white wine. At the end, pour off fat, and deglaze with additional vermouth for gravy.
Serve with potato dish above and two veggies such as sweet potatoes or carrots roasted in a separate pan.
You can also roast asparagus or fennel. Just coat in a very fine layer of olive oil and put under the grill/ in the oven and cook until tender.

Claire,
Chicken sounds delicious...I am definately going to try your recipe. I am fairly new with cooking with herbs, but sure am having fun experimenting!
thanks.

What I ate today:

1 Slice of Organic Oatmeal Bread
Organic Egg cooked in Olive with Pepper and Tumeric
Spanish Rice (half cup)
Chees Burriots ( here is where I went wrong but they were good:)
10 8 oz glasses of water with lemon
Worout-45 minutes of weights mixed with cardio
10 minutes of jumps on tampoline
-
Wow, everyone is eating really healthy. And I've been so inspired to keep at it also. I've been continuing the 2 1/2 mile walk by the ocean every day. Did my cardio scultp last on Friday. I've been doing good with Breakfast, some days I'll have 1 hard boiled egg, slice of oatnut bread and small glass almond milk, OR steel cut oats, hardboiled egg, and always my coffee . No sugar or white flour foods at all. Today I cooking roasted cornish hens, with roasted sweet potato, and roasted asparagas brushed with a little olive oil and copped garlic and lemon zest. Yum. Have not cheated once yet. Snacks are apples or yogurt, or almond milk. And I have lost 3 lbs over the weekend
I'm so happy about that I could jump for joy
-
LOL, If I jumped on that trampoline I would pee! (just HAD to add a bit of humor!!!)
living4today, Claire_in_Seattle, Good meal ideas! Sounds Yummy! I also go for Organic first, but also have to weigh cost! I base it on this: If thin skin - always organic! Don't know if you have a Trader Joe's or Henry's close to you but they do have some Organic at a somewhat reasonable price. Whole Food's for me if what you are buying is reasonable, LOL not often!
I am also eating between high 1200's and high 1400's, don't want to drop my metabolism. I feel good and have energy.
Boy, for the record I miss the beach! One of these days I am drive there! It would be worth the wonderfulness!
Off to plan my food AND EXERCISE for today!
-
Have to roast Cornish Game Hens.....haven't made those in an age.
Seattle is crawling with organic food, and also good local sustainable. My favorite is a place called Metropolitan Market. No, not cheap, but where I get wonderful chickens.
When I did my walk to Trader Joe's last week, I ended up buying a steak for myself. Was that hungry from all the exercise. Then made with a mushroom sauce. I use TJs as a destination for a three mile walk up a major hill, and then additional weight bearing exercise (AKA, groceries) on the way back.
Costco is also local to Seattle...headquartera located in Issaquah.
Dandelion salad was delicious. Not diet food, but yummy.
I buy local organic eggs. Am willing to pay the $$$ as just so different. Make sure I eat the yolks. They have been a godsend throughout chemo.
Can't wait for local asparagus. I eat until coming out my ears. Just so good, and should be here any day now.
I have been eating pears all winter. Just so yummy.
BUT.....I also eat tons of other stuff, including breads and some sweets. As still on chemo, I need to maintain my weight, so wouldn't want to be losing more than half a pound per week. I expect not to need to lose weight at the end.
Will be a question of finding balance once I am done and taking anastrazole. So using the scale and figuring it out.
Then making sure I do the cycling events that I have planned for this summer. I have to start picking up the pace, but did cycle 3 hours on Saturday and 1.5 hours on Sunday.

Hi ladies - I was just browsing and saw this thread and wanted to share my experience. I'm 43 and have been overweight for the last 10 years. Last July, 3 months after my dbl mast I decided I was fed up with my weight and would try, yet again, to lose it (I've tried Weight Watchers numerous times). I was worried that taking tamoxifen and being hypothyroid would make it impossible. My hairstylist recommended a book called Eat Clean by Tosca Reno and I bought it and immediately began implementing the plan. Again, that was last July and to date I have lost 59 pounds! The bottom-line is clean eating - no processed foods of any kind, only whole grains, veggies and fruit and lean protein. That means no cheese, which for me was difficult at first. Another important aspect is eating every 2-3 hours with a bit of protein each time - you spread your food out throughout the day to stabilize your blood sugar and it really helps to prevent hunger and binge-eating. There's no calorie counting or carb counting or anything like that. The book does say that weight loss is 80% diet, 10% exercise and 10% genes and I believe it because until just a month ago I did absolutely no exercise.
So, that's what worked for me. I just met my goal last week and I'm thrilled to say that I've gone from a size 16 to a size 4! My new boobs look great with my new body, and I feel better than I ever have in my life! I just wanted to share, because I know how frustrating it is to be overweight. If I can do it, I think probably just about anyone can! Good luck!
-
JanMarch, thanks for the inspiration and the tip. I just ordered the book from our library
-
JanMarch, Your story is so inspiring. I'm going to look for the book. Congrats on your awesome wieght loss. Clean eating is the way to go, I agree. I have cut out processed foods with flour and sugar completely. I've been really struggling to stay away from the cheese I'm addicted "parmasina reggiano". I love to slice it thin and munch on it but haven' t weeks.

Anyone see this? Have to admit, if it was mac and cheese, I could be one of those rats. http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/03/28/fatty.foods.brain/index.html
-
Thanks, Barb! BTW - I'm going to get my aereola tattoos in an hour, so I'm pretty excited to have this whole process finished - weight loss and reconstruction!
Kmmd - let me know how you like the book. I think the most important thing I took away from it is that if you feed your body regularly - every 3 hours - it begins to trust that it's not going to starve and begins to let go of the extra weight.
-
Hello,
I find it interesting that you are trying to do the opposite of what my mother is trying to do (gain weight). She has lost 30-35 lbs since she started chemo but fortunately she had alot of meat on her bones so she isn't withering away to nothing. Maybe try and be thankful that you are able to hold onto your weight and always remember there is someone who has it worse than you. Everything happens for a reason. I'm sure you look great!! However, I think exercising is great for your mind, body, and spirit!! So keep up the good work. Try not to be discouraged. -
i guess I've gotten over the chemo stuff and am used to my Femara because I am beginning to gain weight.. eek.
a 2 mile walk in the morning always kept me in great shape (that and a high protein breakfast to last till dinner) - but who has time for that sort of thing now?
-
kmmd, Yeah, I did see that on the news last night. Some foods really do seem addictive.
JanMarch, Congrats on finishing up on reconstruction. That's awesome to be doing that after losing some wieght. This horrible disease takes so much away from us, it's wonderful that in spite of that, you are now at the point of doing something to make you feel good about yourself again. I'm still in the middle of reconstruction, and will be following up with my PS after next week. Haven't yet discussed nipple recon too much yet.
JWallace, I wish I was more like your mom as far as losing wieght during chemo. I gained 30 something pounds. I normally fluctuated between size 4 and 6, and now am size 14, so the extra wieght is noticable on me, and not something I am feeling comfortable in my own skin with. Also I want to lessen the chance of recurrance by taking some of those extra pounds off. Thanks, I'll try not to get discouraged.
apple, I'm not on Femara, but I am on Arimidex. I just hope it doesn't make me gain any more weight than I already have. I am walking 2 1/2 miles a day. Today I couldn't because of the storm moving thru our area. So I did some lower body strengthening workout today, instead. Still trying to watch what I'm eating.

Claire_in_Seattle Question you mention in your posting that you eat the yokes? Any particular reason????
Girls I fell off the wagon!!!! I ate 2, mind you not 1, cupcakes WITH ICING. I know that it is just too many appointments, doctors, etc....this week! Poorly prepared for the drive home!
So need some good ideas for future? Portable, no fridge type items. Banana's are good but don't always have them in the house? Any idea's
-
SusieMTN Thanks for the tip on the Green smoothie, I've never tried the spinach with the ingredients you mention.
Guess what ladies, I've lost 6 lbs already and am really getting inspired. Still doing my 2 1/2 mile fast walk every day. and working out too. Still now sugar and white flour products at all. I'll be tempted though this weekend. I'm making an Easter Cake for my grandaughters!

Shanagirl Green Smoothie with Spinach is very good. I also use organic blueberries and banana's. Yesterday, I used spinach with frozen mango, banana, and pineapple, I added this stuff from Whole Foods called Coconut Butter (I think) it is basically whole coconut ground up.... Yummy! Really you can use any green, kale, Chard, collards. My fav is spinach! The only thing I have not used successfully is Arugula. Love to eat it but it wasn't my cup of tea in a green smoothie! Lots of good receipe's if you google green smoothie.
I need to get myself back going I have had THE most frustrating last two weeks. I haven't gained just not lost! I have struggles since my cupcake thing! Bleh!!! So I have done GREAT today so time will tell!
How do you do the little lady below your text Shanagirl ?
Susie
