taxotere and hair loss
I'm sure this has been covered a zillion times, but thought it would be easier for me to just start anew. Everything I've read or heard says hair loss from taxotere is on day 14, maybe day 15. Today is day 13 for me, and there is absolutely no indication of any hair loss anywhere. What can I expect in the upcoming days/week?
Thanks for your help!

smco: For me, day 13, nothing. Day 14 I put my fingers through my hair and came up with a handful. So, I went and shaved it. For me it was easier that way. Over the next 2 weeks the stubble slowly fell out, but still had patches going into my 2nd round. Then after that most of the stubble fell out. I did have some persistent hairs, mostly grey that grew during chemo. It looked so odd and shaggy I intermittently shaved those down too. After my 3rd round the eye lashes and eyebrows went. About 2 months after my last round the hair started growing back in to a short stubble everywhere. My eyelashes are still falling out a year later. My hair grows thick but slow and is about 2-3 inches long depending on where on my head you are looking.
Good luck to you

What kmmd described is what happened to me on Taxotere & Cytoxan.... except I didn't shave my head. I decided to leave it alone to see what would happen. All I did was clip the remaining hair(s) short enough so I didn't look too much like a scarecrow.
For me, the earliest hair loss was around day 13, but it was just a few stray hairs so I might not have noticed if I hadn't been expecting it. On day 14 I could easily pull out strands of hair, mostly at the nape of my neck. Nothing would come out on my crown at that point. By day 15, I was pulling out whole tufts of hair, again mostly at the nape of my neck but also higher up. After that, it was wholesale shedding -- tangles of hair in my hands as I showered; large clumps of hair caught in the drain.
At the time of my 2nd infusion (21 day intervals), I still had a fringe of hair over my ears and in back -- it was enough so that I could wear a cap or scarf and still look like I had hair. But, everywhere else it was almost completely gone -- just a few strands over bald scalp.
So, the answer to your question is, give it another day or so. As you run your fingers through your hair, you'll see more coming out each time.

Sharon, I had FEC first, and then Taxotere but my info says there's not much difference in the timing. What I did notice (and many others here have concurred) is that you'll start to feel a 'tightening" or prickling sensation on your scalp first. Then the hairs will start to fall out. I didn't shave my head, but started wearing a cotton cap when I developed patches of baldness. It took about a week for it to almost all fall out, so that would have been about 21 days after tx.
Oh yes, my hair was shoulder-length for years, so just after my first tx, I had it cut fairly short (didn't want all those long hairs plugging up the shower drain!).
And I didn't lose my eyebrows and lashes until I started taxotere.
Hint: Tax can do a number on your nails but if you keep your hands and feet relatively cold during your tx, you will probably not have a problem with them. My feet were always cold in the tx room (it was summer, I was wearing sandals and the A/C was going full blast) and I had no toenail issues. However, I did lose both thumbnails (BTW, it doesn't hurt, just looks awful).
Good luck and do NOT hesitate to call your Onc about your side effects. There are remedies for nearly all of them. Pamper yourself!
Hugs, Linda

My hair didn't start coming out until day 18 after my first taxotere. I buzzed it off 2 days after my 2nd infusion - couldn't stand the mess of it all coming out. I am now 4 days shy of my last (6th) treatment, and it's actually starting to grow back a little.

Hi Sharon, I had my first treatment of Taxotere & Cytoxan on Tues 3/9. Got a Locks of Love bob beforehand, as a transitional haircut.
The bob started coming out on day 13 (Mon 3/22) in the shower then in earnest days 14 and 15 (lots in my hands in the shower and in hairbursh). By day 16 (Thurs 3/25) it was falling out of its own accord, all over my clothing, really annoying. When I walked that evening it was breezy and my hairs were like dandelion fluff.
Got it buzzed short on Sat 3/27 but not shaved. Now I look like Jay North, the kid who played Dennis the Menace on TV some years back, cowlick and all LOL. Best wishes!

Looks like I'm a week behind you for both my BMX and chemo. I was just out walking the dog and it was a little windy, and I was thinking about what would happen next weekend if I was wearing a wig in the wind! Thanks for your feedback everyone!

My wife began losing hers on day 15 post. She got a short haircut (which looked really good btw). She began wearing hats during the day and a wrap to sleep. The hair loss just kept getting worse and not only did it cause itching but I think there was a psychological component as well seeing the hair come out.
Finally she had enough and yesterday I buzzed it for her and then did a real (careful) razor shave. She is wearing the wrap to sleep to avoid any scalp irritation. Also, avoid the urge to scrub your scalp too hard and don't keep your scalp covered all of the time (words of wisdom from the oncology nurses).
There is a product called "Head Blade" that is designed for balding men which I highly suggest. You can find it in the mens shaving section. It allows you to safely shave yourself and does a great job by all accounts.
Take care

Hi Sharon,
I had my first treatment of Taxotere, carboplatin, herceptin and avastin (I'm in a study) on 02/15. I don't think that I am the norm here. It is now day 42 for me. My hair didn't start to fall out until about day 30ish or so. I have, or should i say had tons, of hair. It has started to look thin at the crown. I started wearing baseball caps this weekend. i could probably get away without a hat, but I think it looks too thin. I have my 3rd treatment in 2 days. I will probably go ahead and shave it at that point.
fwiw, I did a trial run yesterday with my wig. It was windy, and it held up well in the wind and didn't look like i had a wig on.

Wow Verene! Maybe I'll be like you. I too have a super thick hair (something I've always been silly enough to complain about) and haven't started losing it yet (day 17). If I run my hands through it and pull, some strands come out, but nothing really. Unless something drastic happens, maybe I'll make it through to the second treatment. If I make it as long as you, I 'd be sad that I had to lose it at all considering I'm only doing 4 rounds....Oh well, heard it grows back really healthy and fresh. Thanks for your input.

when you say day 13 or 14 do you mean that many days after your first treatment. Also after how many treatments
