This is a current summary of what is known to date about HER2 diagnosis and treatment.  It ends with the promising therapy routes being pursued.  It is a great overview of what has been learned so far.  http://www.eoscme.org/assets/633906821825666439.pdf

I stopped reading at poor prognosis....I was told by a well known oncologist in Chicago that my prognosis was excellent!?!?  Was she lying or did I not read enough??  Please tell me I did not read enough - I have 2 kids - aged 4 and 6 and I am only 35......

jkwick - Your onc wasn't lying.  Before Herceptin her2+ was a pretty bad thing, as it's associated with aggressive, fast-growing and fast-spreading cancer.  My onc told me Herceptin puts our odds back up with her2- people, and actually appears to be giving her2+ a slight advantage in terms of survival.  Remember, too, that her2+ cancers generally respond better to chemo.  BTW, my little one is 5.

    jkwick74,

I have the same question.  Herceptin has really changed the prognosis for HER2+ early stage cancer.  There is only a few years of experience with this large population since it was approved for early stage node positive in 2006 and node negative in 2008.  In the clinical trials it was so effective that the trial was ended early so everyone could have Herceptin.

I suspect in five years we will have a much better idea of the prognosis for early stage women getting Herceptin.

    Best wishes

    Boo

Thanks kimber2006 and Boo307 - Perhaps it is too soon to know....I just read on some other site that HER2+++ seems to respond best to Herceptin so I guess it is a good thing-
