For both men and women, insurance will pay for a mammogram if it's ordered by a physician. In men, this is usually because there's a lump or some other any suspician of breast cancer.

Insurance will pay for "screening" mammograms in women, but not in men. (Screening mammograms are done in people who have no symptoms of breast cancer. These are routine in women aged 40 and older).

The risk of breast cancer in men is so low that screening mammograms (i.e., in the absence of symptoms) aren't recommended.

    Hope this helps.

My insurance has paid for my mammos.   My dr ordered the first one after I had found a lump.   I think men have to have symptoms which might be bc before insurance will pay for mammos.  Since I had bc, as determined by pathology reports, insurance continues to pay for mammos.   I just started on Medicare and the mammo order for Medicare to pay for mammo has to be written for diagnostic mammo, not screening.

Insurance also paid for my father's mamo's - including screening mammo's of  the breast that showed no signs of cancer.  If a lump is found or suspected most insurance companies will pay..and, more recently, if there is a STRONG family history they will also pay.  Insurance companies will pay for all the same screening that a women get if you can show some reason or concern. <sometimes they complain a bit but they do eventually pay if you pusht>.

I had a problem with the BRCA test for myself  (doc's were sure my father must have the BRCA gene because, well he was male instead of female :} ).   They absolutely refused to pay, so TG I was able to take 3K out of the bank and pay for it THEN fight with them afterwards..  That particular insurance company ended up changing their policy for testing based on that "disagreement".  Oh and the doc's were wrong I was not BRCA+..  of course they are starting to understand that there are other, yet to be discovered gene's that effect bc..  Best, Deirdre
