A Pain in the Rib

Hi,

Having some rib pains on the mastectomy side. Sometimes right around the mastectomy scar. Sometimes lower, more towards the tip of the ribs. Sometimes I feel a shooting pain, lasting for maybe 30 seconds? But when I feel around, I don't feel anything in particular. Perhaps some slight soreness here and there. It's about a year since radiation and I am also on AIs. But the pain is mostly on the 'bad' side. How common is this - do you recognize this? I know I could take a bone scan if it gets worse but it would be nice to think it HIGHLY LIKELY it's just from the radiation....

Thanks a bunch,

Helena.

My first thought is - it is from Rads.

I hear people complaining about it all the time - I have even heard some people have had broken ribs - from radiation.

If it was me, I would give it a couple (OK 4!) weeks before I started thinking about a scan. Other people would say get a scan now, so you know either way. It all depends on the type of person you are.

Does Tylenol take care of it? I do find if I am obsessing about a pain somewhere, I take Tylenol for a couple of days, and it sort of switches off my obsessive mind, and I stop focusing on the pain, which then goes away (so far).

    Sending you good thoughts.

    Hi Kerry,

Yes, I take some Tylenol before going to sleep - but not every day. But then I think, maybe I don't feel any pain because I take Tylenol. Or because I take some aspirin here and there (given the news that it's beneficial). The good thing is it kind of moves around. But this shooting pain was a real nasty feeling, like a pinched nerve, and then I start to worry.

Thanks for the good thoughts!! - hopefully it will go on it merry way eventually. I will wait a few more weeks.

    HATING pain (of any kind)

Helena, I've had the same thing and attributed it to the rads. I'm 7 months out and it's not getting better - if anything a little bit worse.

I think if Tylenol takes care of it, it is probably nothing nasty.

My Oncs advice is - be worried about the sort of pain that wakes you up at night.

I think if you poke around and don't get pain it is a good sign too.

I have rib pain most likely from Rads.  It isn't all the time but it is irritating.

Yep, me too.  I have rib pain from time to time, and also a deep stabbing pain where rads were done.  It is a pretty infrequent pain, and comes and goes.  Try starting a pain journal to document when you have the pain, for how long, and if it responds to OTC meds.

My rib pain ha also been attributed to residual rad damage. As long as it comes and goes or moves around and can be contained with OTC meds, I'd say don't worry about it too much. But do mention it to your onc so it can be monitored.

I have had rib pain for 8 years and sometimes it freaks me out still and I get a bone scan--never anything. There is a condition which is inflammation between the ribs in the tissue--it has a name, and I think that is what I have, more than actual pain from the rib bones. Can't recall the name of this condition. I have had  8 surgeries in and around my right rib cage, and with each surgery that pain seems to get more noticeable.

    Thanks you all,

Hopefully and likely just the radiation. But I had a huge tumor which must have had plenty of time to spread around. I just feel stressed about it.

I will probably bring it up to my Onc next time. Just the thought of having to do a scan freaks me out. I had to do a CT prior to starting chemo, for staging, and I remember my scanxiety to today. Took ages to get the results too.

    Ugh.

I have yet to have my surgery or radiation (although am "excited" to say I am finally in a place where I am scheduling surgery in the enxt few weeks) but I have the same type of pain you are describing.  I am still on chemo so that may be a factor.  I just had a completely clean PET scan.

    Thanks Lori

Yep chemo can also give all kinds of funny aches. Thanks for responding - I will keep an eye on things for a few weeks. And good luck with your surgery,

    best,

    Helena.

    Helena,

I'm a year out from radiation and I get all those weird pains too - the rib soreness and the weird stabbing pains around the whole breast area. I was also those weird pains could be some of the nerves which are regenerating - could be happening for an extended period of time.

we are so aware of every little ache and pain in our bodies aren't we? I have pain in my hip from time to time that i'm almost positive is hip bursitis but still one wonders....

    Hi Jackie

Good to hear I am not alone in this - if it is the radiation, it will be interesting to see if it goes away after reconstruction which I am planning this spring. Probably a Lat. Dorsi. So then the damaged muscle and nerves should be replaced with new ones, one would think.

regarding the hip pain, if you are on an AI, that can give all kinds of joint symptoms. You are so right about the body awareness. I was NEVER sick and now I am on hyper alert. I tell myself I am doing well mentally, but in reality it does not take much to get through that little layer of varnish. I was crying on my way home from work. At some point I need to take the step to talk about all this with someone and work through the grief.

I hear you Helena! I go through my ups and downs, and just when I feel like I'm going through a bit of a rut and think of doing something about it, I have some good days and forget about it for a while (never completely forget though). But yes, this is a grieving process and like you, I had never been sick before and really dislike the hypochondriac that I've become. But I can see a light at the end of the tunnel for us - the more time goes by, the better we will feel for more extended periods of time.

About the hip pain, I'm on Tamoxifen, but I do hear some people experience hip pain with it. I'm comforted by the fact the pain goes away for days and sometimes weeks at a time...

And yes, all those pains are normal - the mastectomy severed all those little nerves around the breast area and some of them will slowly regenerate and cause twinges of pain - that's how my BS described it.  Very exciting that your reconstruction is coming up!

    I'm another new hypochondriac!

I have vague, occasional hip pain too, which I (hopefully) attribute to Arimidex, but wish it would go away. I remember after I was Dx, and reading about people saying "Oh every ache and pain gets me worried". And (silly me!) thought - well, I certainly won't do that! And of course I do it all the time.

I am always very aware of activities I do that can cause later pain (so I remember to tell myself - you have a sore arm because you shovelled snow for an hour, not because it is cancer) And the same for when the kids get sick - if they get a cough, I tell myself not to be alarmed when I get it. But even still, I do worry all the time. This last weekend I had bone pain from Zometa, and my husband had to keep reminding me that I had just had a bone drug, because I was freaking out. I hate it!

I too am hoping that time will help a bit.

I had a left side mastectomy and also experience pain at the edge of my rib cage if I poke around there.  I mentioned it to my oncologist and breast surgeon and they both agreed that it's likely a little scar tissue forming and possibly pulling on my rib cage and some nerves in there, but it's nothing to be alarmed about.  They both said once my body is fully healed from all the surgery and treatments, my body and the nerves in there will "re-set" and the pain will go away.
