Oncologist, Is it normal to see the PA instead of the Dr?

Hi,

I'm new to the oncologist thing. I saw him once, had my second appointment with him yesterday. When I was called back to a room, they said we're behind today so you will be seeing Lisa (the PA). Is that normal? I don't mind seeing a PA if I have a cold, but this is cancer. Is this normal to be put put off on the PA?  Do I need to change oncologists?

    Susie123...sorry to hear what happened.  It really depends.  I would ask the questions:  Do they have special training in oncology (are they certified)?  How long have they been practicing in oncology? My oncology team consisted of a MD and a NP (the second one).  The NP was certified in oncology and she had been doing oncology for 20 years (first as a nurse then as a NP).  Actually other oncologists would ask her advice.

    Should you change oncologist....how do you feel....I mean down in your gut?  If this happened once it will have the possibility of happening again......how did the PA do?  Would you feel comfortable seeing her again?  Do you feel like they have your best interest in mind?  This is your life we are talking about.  You have to fully trust your oncology team. Do be afraid to stand up for yourself.....Not only did I change oncologists, I actually went to another state to find one I fully trusted.  I love my MD/NP team.

    Susie - check out the thread below - "I love my oncologist and am looking for a new one."  I had the exact same thing happen. I change oncologists, and now have an oncologist who told me that she always sees her patients and doesn't even have a PA on staff.  As you say, this is cancer, not a cold.  

    PAs have a place - I have no problems seeing a PA for the routine exam, etc. at the beginning of the appointment, but then when the routine stuff is done, I still want to see the oncologist during that appointment.  Pushing us off on a PA is not acceptable.
