PERSISTENT COUGH

I don't really think this is the correct section for this topic, but I can't find anything else that's appropriate.

I had a mastectomy 7 weeks ago and am recovering beautifully.It was non invasive and I haven't required any follow up treatment. I have the all clear and feel extremely lucky.

For a week now, I've had a cold and   then a cough which is the worst I've had in many years.My chest feels so sore inside. I have been to see my GP who gave me anti-biotics. This is day 3 of taking them and I still feel so tired. I really lack energy. Did anyone out there get a cough so soon after surgery ? Am i underestimating the fact that I had a pretty bloody big operation and feeling tired is perfectly natural ?

PLEASE  someone talk to me !!

    Woodseer, perhaps you might post this on the 'Helping me Get Through Treatment" thread in case you don't get many replies here.

    I suspect you may have picked up a nasty bug with a lingering cough.  That combined with the stress of the last couple of months might have comprimised your immune system even more.  Good luck and I hope the cough and fatigue clear up soon.  A cough in itself can be tiring.  Gentle hugs.

    Hi woodseer,  I had a cold too that led to a persistent cough.  I had that cough for almost 2 months.  My cold turned into bronchitis. There is nothing you can do about bronchitis but wait for the cough to go away.  As far as your chest feeling sore inside, keep in mind your surgery was only 7 weeks ago.  It takes almost a year for all the internal stuff to heal completely.  Coughing is making the soreness worse.  You did have a big time surgery and everyone reacts and recovers at a different rate.  It isn't unusual to be still be tired after 7 weeks, plus you've had a cold.  Hang in there.  If the cough still persists after the antibiotics are gone, check back with you GP and ask about bronchitis or even pneumonia. A big surgery like that can compromise your immune system.  

    Good for you for not needing any follow up treatments.  Hope you're feeling better soon.

    I work in an elementary school and there is something going around that does have a horrible/lingering cough that goes with it.  Sounds like you may have something like this.Frown Hope you feel better soon.

    Firni is right about the healing. Just be thankful that you didn't get a bad cold sooner or it would probably hurt worse. Hoepfully you can knock this cold out real fast so your chest doesn't hurt anymore and you can start to heal. I'm sure the constant coughing slows down the healing a little.
