Hi, I'm curious as to what it might mean if my folate levels are high.  I can only find info on low levels.  What could the reasons be for a high level?  Mine were >20.  Normal levels just said >5.38.

High levels of folic acid in the blood may mean that you eat a diet rich in folic acid, take vitamins, or take folic acid pills. Consuming more folic acid than the body needs does not cause problems. High folic acid levels can also mean a vitamin B12 deficiency. Body cells need vitamin B12 to use folic acid. So if vitamin B12 levels are very low, folic acid cannot be used by the cells, and high levels of it may build up in the blood. But a folic acid test is not a reliable way to test for a vitamin B12 deficiency

Stephanie, Thanks for the quick reply!  I don't think I eat a diet high in folate--I'm not the world's best veggie eater--but I'm wondering if being pregnant a year ago might have something to do with the high levels (because of prenatal vitamins high in folate)  I haven't taken them for almost a year, now, but maybe folate stays in the body for a long time?

As for vitamin B12, I had that tested as well, and it was 519 and normal values said 200-900.

Does anyone know about the connection between folate levels and B12 levels that are mentioned above?  I'd love to hear more. . .
