Revolting Mouth Syndrome
Hi guys - I was reading a link somewhere?? about a remedy for that revolting, metallic, furry, fuzzy, 'nothing tastes good anymore', 'please chop my tougue and taste buds out' or 'get rid of that bird living in my mouth' feeling. I have now had chemo no 2 and am desperate to find a help! Have tried all the normal stuff (Kool Mints, blah blah), nothing helps. Please........Desparate.......May Fade Away To A Shadow (NOT!!!!).

Howdy,
I never found anything that took care of that except knowing that it would pass. Sucking on fresh pineapple does cut through the dry mouth. I kept some in the fridge ready to use when I couldn't stand the dry mouth. I felt the urge to drink extra cold water and went through a crazy month drinking mega iced coca cola. I stayed away from anything that didn't taste good, and those flavors changed all the time. Low saliva can lead to tooth decay so meticulous brushing and oral care is essential. I'm dealing with that now (2 and a half years since chemo). My taste buds are back to 95% although I find some of food very salty.
Hang in there, try different methods for reversing the yucky mouth feeling and know that it will pass

This helps with the hairy toung too.....Be sure to buy the flavored kind.
I personally used this mouth sore cocktail: Equal parts of any liquid Benadryl and liquid Maalox. Only mix up what you are going to use (about 1 teaspoon of each). Swish in mouth for a minute or two like a mouthwash. Then spit out.
(I used this twice daily and never had a problem with mouth sores.) Try strawberry flavored Maalox and children's cherry flavored Benadryl. It tastes great. Maalox Maximum Strength 12 oz Total Stomach Relief, Strawberry
Rite Aid 4 oz Diphedryl Allergy Liquid Medication, Cherry-Flavored

Thanks guys will try anything as now starting to develop some sores - Boo Hoo Hoo me!!!
Although I must say that casaredona (no offence BooBee) that the mega coke thing sounds a lot more fun!!

Biotene - toothpase, mouthwash and pocket sized spray. I don't chew gum but they make that too. Along with icy cold drinks this was (and still is) a life saver!. Most grocery stores and pharmacy chains have it.

Hi, I also had the dry mouth and I found that yogurt helped, also a monthwash. And i sucked boiled sweets like there was no tomorrow - try this, it might help ?

Thanks guys, I have to say tho that even brushing my teeth causes intense stinging - even though I have always used Sensodyne toothpaste and still do. Having said that the pain and ulcers have eased up quite a bit so I am not so desperate - I guess this will be one of my side effects for the first week or so after my chemo. Does anyone find that the same side effect occurs each time or does it change to maybe something else?

I had the same exact thing following each and every one of my chemos. My gums got fire engine red and I developed big blisters on the gums that popped and then the skin would slough off of them. I had to go to the dentist at one point to get a coating put on my teeth as my teeth hurt so much. They gave me mouth rinse but I don't think it helped very much. Brushing with an electric tooth brush seemed to help. I essentially got to the point where I knew it was coming, how long it was going to stay, and that it would go away. Avoided any pointy or rough food (Captain Crunch comes to mind) until it passed. It is a sucky side effect....hope you find something that works for you.
