Ooph vs. bone breaks

I know there has been a lot of discussion in the past regarding recommedations for calcium and other vitamin in take.  My oncologist has never really spelled it out for me neither did the gyno. onco surgeon who did my OOPH.  I am 37 and had an OOPH (ER+) last year during my bil mx and have now started Tamoxifen.  I lead a pretty active lifestyle and have 5 little kids (twins that will be 1 next week) so I am on the go.

Now to the question...I now have a stress fracture in my ankle.  Great!  I am not sure how I did it. It's been hurting for a couple of months and I finally decided I had better see someone.  Is there a direct correlation in the increased risk of bone breaks because of getting the OOPH and being thrown into menopause so quickly?

the ortho doctor has me signed up for a bone density next week to baseline it and told me to get taking Calcium/Vitamin D up to 1600 daily.  Does that sound right?

I am getting a Bone Density scan done regularly. I think I get one every year (I've had one) My Onc also has told me to take calcium and Vit D. So that all sounds right.

Also I am on Zometa, which strengthens bones (and hopefully lowers risk of mets) Have you considered adding that?

    Kerry,

I need to see my doc soon too, and want to ask for the Zometa.

You did not have to pay for it, right ???

Could you send me again the facts to convince him..........

    Million thanks

    Carol

I think my recent stress fracture for no apparent reason will be enough to convince my onco next time I see her.  Is it recommended for all ooph girls are in certain cases?  Is it a pill and how often?  Side effects? Concerns/risks?  Is it okay for ER+ ladies?

It is an IV infusion, every 6 months. There is also a pill form, but my onc said it was difficult to take, and there were gastro SE's.

Carol - I had to pay, but our insurance (Great West Life) covers 90% of it.  Norvatis pays for the infusion.

There are a couple of threads here with good info - Zometa and Zometa anyone. I will bump them up for you.

All my docs have been quite insistent that I take calcium.  I have had annual bone density tests done to keep on top of things.

Last week I asked my onc about zometa.  Unless I have bone issues she will not suggest it.  Apparently the stats saying that is beneficial to prevent recurrence only apply to those just finishing their regular tx.

i just had a bone density test.. i've been very active generally and was confident they'd be fine and they were.

i do take Calcium and Vitamin D.. but I also rely on dairy products.  I know many women eschew dairy after a cancer diagnosis.. it is readily absorbed.

    chocolate milk is delish

you certainly ARE on the go! congratulations on those kids.
