thinking ahead re-excision

Just got my pathology report back from my lumpectomy.  All DCIS (thankfully) but one of the margins is .5 mm.  The nurse gave me the numbers over the phone and I will see the BS on Monday to talk, but I am guessing a re-excision for a larger margin is in the cards.  Does anyone know how quickly a re-excision can be done, i.e., how long after the lumpectomy one typically has to wait?   Also, I know re-excision is not as big a surgery as the original lumpectomy but is it still a hospital procedure  I had GA with the lumpectomy; hoping I won't have to do that again.  Thanks

    How about having conscious sedation? you don't need to be intubated, like with a general anesthesia. (I had conscious sedation with my lumpectomy, colonoscopy, and even with my open abdominal hysterectomy, as I didn't want any intubation).  You don't feel or remember a thing.

    It may depend on the hospital but I was given a choice.  I went with the general both times.  For the reexcission, I was almost convinced by the anesthisiologist [sp] to do the sedation until he said "and you know if you wake up during the procedure, I'll be there and you can just say mark, I need to go back to sleep and I'll give you more stuff."

    !!!!!!!

    uh Mark, that is my worst nightmare.Cry  I went with general.  I felt fine afterwards---no sore throat no problems.  After it was over, a doctor friend told me that depending on the person and what they give you, a person under sedation can hear what is going on and have some sort of nightmareish memory.  Definitely NOT for me.

    I'm sorry but 3monst you just made me laugh out loud with your "uh Mark, that is my worst nightmare"!  I needed that laugh so thanks!

    I have had hand surgery with sedation and a nerve block.  I much prefer that as I am very sensitive to GA but that's just me!  I was asleep with the sedation and didn't feel or hear a thing!

    Hello,

    I had a re-excision for margins about 2 years ago. Much easier than the first surgery.

    However, going thru that and not being under general anaesthetic was not something that I wanted...I went for it...woke up...and went home.

    Wait to find out where your margins are.....I had  situation where my margin was less than 1mm but it was the posterior margin......the surgeon explained to me that she went all the way down to the muscle fascia so there was no more breast tissue there......I just proceeded to radiation. If the margins were smaller elsewhere it could have been different.
