Hi all - Boy March is going FAST!!!!

Hope everyone is getting their 30 mins of physical activity in daily.  I have been working with a new group of folks over at Gildas Club and gave them all pedometers and they are aiming to get in 10,000 steps a day!  It makes it feel like a game and allows you to work it into your daily activities as well.  Got an email last night from one man who walked 12000 steps yesterday - the most activity he says he has had in a very long time (even went out for a walk with his wife which he never does) and says he feels great!!!!

We leave for our triathalon (turned duathalon since the water is too cold - only 50 degrees :-( )  Should be a fun weekend!  Looking forward to getting the race part over with and on to Disney

    Hope you are all well.

    Keep moving!!!!

Hard to believe the month is half over - hope everyone is getting their minutes in!!!!

I am back from Tri/duathon - as some of you heard, I had a crash and finished my race in an ambulance instead of bike!  I ended up with a broken collarbone some bumps and bruises and a concusion - yikes!  So I will be taking it easy for a couple of weeks so no March prize for me probably!!!

Have been doing this.  Finally got out x-country skiing over the weekend, and cycling on Saturday.  Will get in today's by taking my bicycle to the shop for repairs and walking back!

Sounds like you are starting to mend, Mary.  So glad of that.  What a bummer!

I was able to get an hour long walk in yesterday - it has been beautiful here for the last few days.  So broken and bruised I still got out there and had a lovely walk with a new friend - another bc survivor.

For those who aren't on the monthly exercise challenge email list - an update  -

I am healing slowly but surely (or maybe a bit faster since it hasnt even been 2 weeks since my accident yet!)

Headaches, dizziness, ear ringing - all gone :-)  took about a week (they did do a ct scan in hopsital and said "yes, you do have a brain" but nothing more than a concussion.

Collarbone/shoulder/hip - all still sore but my range of motion is good and I havent missed any work and have been going to the gym every other day (mostly situational - I have had too much going on to go daily)

I am officially now the Wellness Coach/Personal Trainer for cancer survivors at the YMCA.  I will be working solely with cancer survivors and patients on a 12 week wellness plan and then offering group personal training and personal training after the 12 weeks.

I am also continuing to do my volunteer exercise workshop at Gildas club and am working with a running program on becoming a suvivor mentor/trainer for new runners and last but not least my THRIVING bco girls!!!

And in my spare time I work, take care of my family and sometimes sleep.

    But I am happy :-)

ps - I have not been on the bco site much lately - partially because I am too busy but also because I am in a different place lately (in my head).  I do check PMs and get emails when people post to this thread.

If you would like to join our THRIVING bco email list or sparkteam - send me an email(or PM me).  Each month I send prizes out those that meet the goal of exercising 30 mins/day (900 mins/month) but the real prize is feeling well and strong!

    Be well!

Mary....congrats on your new position....I wish we lived closer together...I would love to have you train me in person.....and so glad to hear that you are feeling better....I haven't been good about tracking my walking this month....nor have I been good about walking daily....still hoping to get back on track....but need to develop a plan so I don't put the walk off....

Karen - it really helps me to go first thing, as soon as I wake up. No putting it off then, I just get up and go. I usually only do 30 minutes, because I need to get kids up, lunches made, etc. But I know if nothing else, I've got my 30 minutes a day in.

I do often do a second longer walk in the afternoons, but I know how easy it is to put things off, stuff happens, it rains, etc.

Big news story - women need 60 ,mins of exercise a day!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100323/ap_on_he_me/us_med_middle_aged_spread

So ladies, it is there in black and white - we cant try fooling ourselves into thinking we dont really need to do this :-)

If you are getting your 30 mins a day - great!  Now try adding to it

If you arent getting your 30 mins a day - get started!!!

It is probably the best thing you can do for yourself each day - so treat yourself!

Lol - I just clicked on that and had to laugh at the "older women" headline!!

It is funny, my neighbour who is a large woman (tall and well as overweight) was just telling me the other day that she had tried Curves and it didn't work, even though she went "every week". As in once a week. I just think people don't get it, that this is something you need to do every day. It is as important in your life as eating and sleeping.

How true Kerry.  I met up with a friend of mine today and she told me how good I looked and she couldn't get over the weight I lost.  She asked me what my secret was.  I said working out and eating healthy.  She told me that she was working out too but nothing was working for her.  She then told me that she was only going once a week too, so I told her she had to step it up a bit.

I get so cross when people say to me "Oh, it is so easy for you, you are naturally thin", and I'm thinking, yeah, I only exercise every day, and eat pretty healthily, there is no "luck' involved!

I am so pleased with myself. I mightn't have lost weight but put some pants on last week that I couldn't get into even a short while ago. My Dh is impressed that on our evening walks I can actually keep up with him and sometimes manage to make him speed up. And this is with my bad knee!!

    Thanks for the encouragement.

We are almost half way through April - Can you believe it?  We had some nice weather - summerry but back to Spring with some mid 60s and breezy - not awful.

I need mailing addresses for anyone that I owe prizes to for their March Fitness Goal  - orders are ready to go out.  Email or PM me your addresses IIf this is your first month making goal - I have addresses for those who made it in January and Feb) so I can get prizes to you before April is over!!!

I am so proud of all of you for doing this for yourselves each day - prizes are nice but really - the prize is that you feel well and are in control of your health and fitness.  It is hard to get started sometimes but I hope you are finding the benefits far outweigh the lazy pull back to the couch :-)

My collarbone and hip are finally feeling better - it has been a little better every day but I am now back to running every other day and adding in some P90x and feeling good!  Getting ready for our next big event which is a 200 mile relay (with 12 people) - sounds crazy but should be fun! I hope!  That is mid may.  My goal is to be in awesome shape by the June 5th womens race that is held locally - last year I ran it in my best time ever (even pre cancer) and it was ironically a year to the day from when I found the lump in my breast.  So this year I would love to improve on that!

I'm baaaaack - FINALLY, chemo done, radiation and SE's done and I'm starting to feel energized again.  I am still having a terrible time with my feet, standing too long hurts, end of the day is painful and walking long distance hurts.  But...... last week I did some short (20min) walks with the dogs towards the end of the week.  Because I'm having so much trouble with my feet I decided to get a bike - I will work around the foot issue.

This morning I walked for about 1 - 1 1/2 mi with the dogs, dropped them off and headed out for 2 mi on the bike.  Although there was one point I really thought of calling DH for a ride back (at 7am), but decided that would be embarrassing and made it home w/o stopping.  This body is not in shape for bike riding, but it will be..........I refuse to give in.

Claire - thank you for the "kick in the butt" and advice for getting started.

Mary - thank you for continuing to include me even when I had to stop.  So glad to hear you're feeling better and the collarbone is healing.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Came home, walked the dogs then jumped on the new bike for a bike ride, which turned out to be a short ride.  My muscles are still a little pissy from yesterday.  I knew I needed to get back in shape, but I REALLY need to get back in shape.  I've never been this out of shape in my life, guess the bike was a wake up call for me get moving!!!

Jenn3:  It's hard to get going at first.  Just keep at it and it will get easier.  Make sure that you don't increase your workouts too much at a time.  It is better to increase gradually and not get really sore than to work out really hard and not be able to do anything for a few days.

Remember the goal is to do something every day - for 30 days - so that it becomes habit and part of your life.  That something is going to vary depending on where you are fitness wise and what your schedule allows.

Going for a walk is a great start.  ESPECIALLY now that the weather is good.  Commit to a 30 min walk each day and you will find, pretty quickly, that it is addicting and you start looking forward to it!

Walk with your hubby, kids, dog and you get the added benefit of some quality family time too not to mention Vitamin D from a sunny afternoon.

If you decided that one day you feel like jogging to the next mailbox - that is great!

Our groups virtual 5k is June 5th  - so map out a 3.1 mile loop and plan on walking, running or bothing it!
