Hi Ladies!  I wrote an article for a local website www. 918moms.com  about my journey with breast cancer, specifically DCIS.  Compared to many, my journey has been pretty smooth.  If you want to read it, it will still be there for a few more days under mom on the move.  I am sure all of you can relate to it!  I am trying to get the word out to others to get their annual mammograms!  I have had three ladies say they were going for  their first mammograms.  Maybe some good can come from my diagnosisSmile

Thanks so much for allowing us to read your article!!!   I know that because of this article, many women will open their eyes and realize it can happen to them, too!!!  I was just diagnosed with DCIS in February --- and I am still in the throes of biopsies, MRIs, more biopsies, etc.  I am hoping my next one on Monday will show my left breast clean --- and then I will have the same decision you had --- 1 or 2???

I hope the days ahead for you continue to get better and better....

    Dr. Paul,

Thanks so much for sharing your story.  I'm glad you are doing well!

I was diagnosed Feb 15th and had my last MRI biopsy this Wednesday to check out one other spot. Fortunately, I found out today from the radiologist the spot was not cancer. I've been getting my mammograms since my early 30's and I'm now 44. My mom is a breast cancer survivor/mastectomy of 17yrs but unfortunately, one of my younger sisters died from BC at 30yrs old. I received a phone call today from my surgeon that I do not have the cancer gene. Even so, I'm still tossing with whether to have a lumpectomy or mastectomy but will decide soon.

What an amazing story and your attitude is inspiring.  I laughed when I read the part about "you know it's bad news when they put you in a room with Kleenex."

I was diagnosed 2/3 and am scheduled for lumpectomy 3/10, but I'm still second guessing this choice.  My gut reaction is to have the bilateral mastectomy, but like you said so well, "...remember this is DCIS, it is non life threatening (when caught early) and the question is do you undergo a prophylactic treatment for a non life threatening entity?"  The decision seems to be a moot point for me now because I learned that my insurance company doesn't cover a prophylactic mastectomy unless I meet certain criteria.  So for me, it's on to the lumpectomy...

Thanks for sharing your journey. With your great attitude I just know your healing and reconstruction will go off without a hitch.

Have to agree on the kleenex mention. Funny, because I felt strange when I was led to a room with a large HD screen on the wall and a small table with a breast cancer pamphlet stack on it. I suspected nothing, and actually had ZERO reaction while I was being told that I had cancer, mainly because I was in shock. I actually doubted that the film on the screen was my breast, and I mentioned that to the radiologist. She didn't seem to think it was funny when I pointed out that the breast on the screen looked entirely too full and perky to be mine....

Anyway, thank you for sharing this article. I think it was a gift from God that you met your 1/2 brothers and sisters, and that your step mother was such a gracious woman. What a gift that ultimately was.

    Peace to you,

    MaryAnn
