I just watched a neat thing on youtube about a woman who decided not to have her nipple recon after her bi-lat.  She opted to do a tattoo instead.  I like this idea...anyone know anything about it?  The less surgery the better for me!

There do seem to be many options when it comes to breast reconstruction - so many possibilities and decisions! - but that is why BCO is so great, you know other women have done research and have shared what they have found.

when you are on the discussion boards, click on the search function which is in the upper right where you log in. if you search  nipple tattoo, you will find many postings about this - most will be from the Breast Reconstruction Board.

I had my nipples reconstructed only to find out they are so light that I needed to do a "touch up" with a tattoo!  If I had the option to a "do over" Laughing I would just go right to the tattoo avoid the additional operation altogether..  Now Ithere are concerns about tatooing, for example I did the "stain" as the regular tattoo paints have components in them that makes it a bit more difficult for a radiologist to "see" the area closest to the nipple in your future MRI's.  So make sure you are working with a medical tattoo artist and there are several here on teh board who offer their time and information...  Good luck and as Julie said the search will bring you much more info...  Best of luck and I hope everything turns out the way you want  it!!!  Best, Deirdre

Deirdre: You said you had your nipples reconstructed and they are light..Are you talking about the aerola being tattooed on and the tattoo being light colored?  I'm scheduled for nipple construction March 31.

Mikita5:  When the Areola was first reconstructed (along with the nipple) it was quite dark, but over about 3 months it lightened almost fadded away, so I had the areola darkened with a tattoo.. and from my conversations apparently this is common.. Hence if given the change I just wouldn't bother with the surgery to recconstruct the areola/nipple I would go right to the tattooing - a good medical tattoo artist can make a great looking replica..  Good luck!

Thanks for discussing this subject. I just finished my final implant exchange, and I am thinking of going this route. I had messaged Facecrafter who gave me the name of two women who do this in NY where I live. I know I need to wait some time, but I am prone to infections and setbacks every time I have surgery. So I am thinking this is the route for me. And if you go to the website and look at the pictures, they look amazing. Interesting about what type of pigment to use. Is there anything else I need to know that may effect me medically for future testing? Or is there a certain dye that is preferred over others? The only testing I have is MRI to check my silicone implants, as I had a bilateral. So I don't need to worry about mammography picking it up. Thanks for the feedback.

CarolMarie, if you have touched base with Facecrafter they are the best people to suggest pigmentations.. and I always let my MRI tech know that I have had the areola's tattooed..  Good luck and I hope everything turns out amazing!!!  I totally understand about the infection potential we should all be so careful today about any kind of surgery!  Some you can't avoid but this is one you can so good luck again and my thoughts are with you!
