Chronic Seroma anyone?

Nancy~ Before the capsulectomy you could kinda tell where my breast was if that made sense afterwards I was bunched at the top and flat on the lower side of my scar. It was not a nice look at all. It had not hardened yet but I think it would have if I had not had the fluid removed.

Ladies,
WOW I love these boards as I have this issue, TOO! I had a partial mastectomy after a few re-excisions and they blame the re-exisions on the issue. I am almost 2 years out from surgery and I feel like I have had quite a few issues other woman have not had to deal with... prior to BC, I had cellulitis in my breast after giving birth... antibiotics did not work so emergency surgery was done and I had to pack my breast and change the dressing 3 X a day for 2 months!!!!
Then, one year later, get BC... had my surgeries... started to get lymphedema symptoms, went to LE... in the meantime, there was a pocket of fluid and hardness right around the incision line and it was inflamed one day... off to ultrasound where they did a needle aspiration and I found out it was infection- (Besides Cancer, Infection is my next least favorite word!) So, on antibiotics I went and the infection subsided.
However, I was just at the dr for more fluid buildup and hardness in that breast, AGAIN! They are recommending I see a PS as I have had no recon at this time as I still have fear of going under the knife and infection.
What to do ladies! I am just grateful we have each other to bounce our issues off of as no ONE understands what I am talking about in the "normal" world!

My issue was a bit different so I am not sure if this may help.
I had a chronic seroma for over 4 months after bilat mastcetomy with flap reconstruction. It was near my incision in my leg but my incision was closed and it never weaped ,nor was it infected. I had it drained twice but it kept filling up. It was hard like a golf ball , pocket of clear fluid.
the start of 2010, I went on high protein, higher fat, and low carb diet. Within 3 days the seroma dissipated and has yet to return. I am certain the low carb diet allowed for my body to get rid of extra fluid.....after the area was sore to the touch .

Thanks Happy for the tip.
-
ACH! Low carbs? Don't think I can do it for long, lol. Happy, you said you saw results in 3 days. How much longer did you continue the diet?
-
Nancy, I am still on it and have yet to see that sucker seroma reappear!
I bet if you eat-about 30 -40 carbs a day for a few days and it does help your seroma, try and stick it out until it is not as sensitive and your body may fight on its own to keep that space occupied without fluid. then you should be able to go back to your normal diet. Hopefully...
Jamieh- look at you, Gorgeous and Blonde!

I too have a seroma in my left breast[lumpectomy on 8/09]. My breast surgeon examined it after my mammogram and ultrasound on 8/10. He said it would be reabsorbed by my body, that draining it can lead to more problems. After reading these posts, I can see what he meant. How long does it take to reabsorb? It is not causing any problems. Karen

It has been a while since I posted. I had preventative bi-lat MX on June 28, 2010. I had 4 months of draining seromas both sides, hospitalised for Cellulitis, 18 courses of antibiotics and it finally all cleared up. I had horrible hard 2cm deep crevices from where the fluid had all hardened and battle like there is no tomorrow with LE in both arms and trunk. SO, I saw the PS who said it woud be ok to go ahead with the expander recon on 17 Nov, 2010. I had the surgery and all went so well. He revised my scars and took out some necrosis pockets and all seemed to be ok. Well low and behold here we are 14 days later and my old friend Stinking Seroma has attacked the right side of my chest yet again. I called the PS and he said come in. His nurse was a witch, no bedside manner and she took off the dressings and binned them before the surgeon came in. When he came in she had cleaned it all and said there was no ooze. She lied there was ooze on the left one and guess what today there is ooze on both of the dressings. So anyways PS said it can be tricky draining seromas and he would rather just go ahead with next weeks fill and push the fluid out. I have been to hell and back with infection and LE and hospital stays and antibiotics and i am petrified of more surgery and losing my TE. I did not feel comfortable with that nurse either and just worry. The swelling has gotten painful and I am concerned. I have put a call into his rooms. It is not hot, and not red and I am on antibiotics and have been since surgery.
Has anyone not had seromas drained and had success with expanders? I am not feeling confident. I have no insurance, and am having this recon with a private surgeon as a public patient. I just pray to god that this turns out well. I am trying to not use my arms and am really resting like he says. Any other tips would be great ! Kell

Kell,
Sorry for ot responding earlier... my hope is things are getting better for you! PLEASE let me know how it is going. I did not have recon... but I can say, I have had cellulitis which would not go away and had to have emergency surgery to remove the infection, so YES I understand your issues and fears. It all started prior to my bc diagnosis right after my 2nd born was born. I had the cellulitis for the first time when she was one month.. in the hospital, surgery and then packed it for 2 months to clean it out. Fast forward, got bc, had surgery, rads, and infection in between. (Had it drained at a hospital!). Now, years later, I continue to have LE in my truncal area and I just do not know how to get relief... it seems a bit more tricky than arm LE... what do you do for it?
BTW- My incision, which I had 2 surgeries, one lumpectomy followed by reexicision because it did not lear the margins is STILL hard, hard, HARD! It constantly keeps me concerned because of infection... and well, we are not suppose to have any lumps and we are suppose to be watching for these for bc. ANYWAY, I have been rambling, I just wanted you to know you are not alone... and it has been since 2008 for me!

Help - I am confused about seromas and the drain. My daughter has had fluid removed with a needle twice and still has the surgical drain in - now on third week. Are these tow things the same of id the seroma only in the breast cavity where the tumors were removed?
Also, I need information from any of you who had a recurrance - what was your initial dx and tx recommendations? Did you follow the doctors recommendations? My daughter is resisting the mastectomy after the lumectomy found two tumors, actually three - one was small and very close to the first 1.3cm. Margins were not clean. She is HER2+++, ER and PR +. Thanks to all of you for posting.

I've also developed what seems to be chronic seroma on the irradiated side. First surgery was in 2008, latest (revision) was in April 2010. Have had it drained multiple times by my PS, and had steroids injected twice, which worked temporarily, but it has always refilled with fluid. Has ANYONE out there found anything that works to stop seroma? High protein diet was mentioned somewhere. I'm probably not willing to have another surgery. Has anyone tried having air injected into the cavity?? See this article: http://www.liebertonline.com/doi/abs/10.1089/153082002763471957 I'm looking for any new ideas that might help. Have had it drained, compressed, hot compress, cold compress. Thanks in advance!
-
I have not had radiation and my seroma was in my leg but I swear the low carb diet got rid of it in like 4 days after having it for 4 months -drained three times. Sugar and carbs make you hold on to extra fluid (bloating) . Have you tried low carb not high protein for at least a week?
good luck.
-
I don't know is the high protein, low carb thing will work but I'm going to try it.
I've had my seroma for 2 weeks. I'm so ready for it to be GONE.

Is anyone else dealing with repeated seromas? I just had my 4th removed by my plastic surgeon. I still have tissue expanders in, because I needed unexpected chemo, but I'm worried that this whole seroma problem will continue when my TEs are exchanged with implants. The amount of fluid she's getting out is kind of alarming. Would appreciate any info.... Thanks!
