Eighty-eight percent (88%) of the 143 respondents were under the age of 53 when diagnosed. Perhaps someone could start a poll for the age of the women on this board.

I was 36 years old. Absolutely no family history. I had all three kids young. I nursed my third child. I was waiting to get my first mammogram when I was 40. Well cancer found me first......I did find it myself.

What really concerns me is how skewed these numbers are purely because if dense breast tissue was included as a risk factor, and all of us who have dense breasts had US and/or MRI screenings in addition to useless mammography, the likelihood is that the numbers would shift radically down with fewer women being diagnosed in their 40's and a greater number being diagnosed in their 30's and 20's. Obviously, there is much more to it than the simplicity of the way I am looking at it, but it sure seems clear to me. I was 48.

I was and still am 53. My gyn felt a "thickening" during a routine exam and sent me for my usual mamagram. Knowing that the doctor had felt something the tech did the usual mamagram and then took out various torture devices and worked me over at all kinds of angles. I was told that the mamagram showed no change from previous years and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. 10 minutes later I went in for a sonogram and the tech went out to get the doctor during the procedure. I knew then that my relief was premature. The tumor never showed up on the mamagrams and may have been missed by the sonogram if the doctor had not pinpointed the suspicious area. I am so grateful to my gyn as none of the technicians or other doctors I saw afterwards were ever able to feel the lump.

47. My second mammogram picked it up. No lymph nodes, lumpectomy, radiation, but no chemo. Recurrence at 59, stage IV. Cells had escaped and remained dormant for 12 years. Mammograms had shown clear for 12 years. No cancer in breast at recurrence. Metastasis to sternum, lymph node, and lung pleura. ER and PR+. Femara and Zometa for one year now and cancer not evident per PET/CT scan results a week ago.

i was 55, my mother was 32 and my grandmother was 43. my grandmother died a few years after being diagnosed, my mother lived to age 84 without a recurrence. i had genetic testing and the results were negative. but . . . they told me there is a 15% chance of false negative or false positive. i would bet the farm that i am positive.

26, I found the lump myself on my daughter's 1st birthday. I nursed her until she was almost 11 mos. I have no BC in the close family (although my maternal GM did have ovarian). My BRCA was negative. Risk Factors, Shmisk Factors

I was 34.

I was/am 39. I found the lump myself. Dr sent me for my first mammo and ultrasound. Lump didn't show up on either and they told me it must be nothing. My Dr said 'no' and had me see a breast specialist. Thank goodness for my awesome Dr. Lump was cancer. Had unsucc lumpectomy and am now scheduled for mast next week. Reading how some women have had a mast and years later end up with mets scares the you-know-what out of me.
-
I had a mammogram and sonogram 4 months before I found my lump myself. I got an all clear letter from the radiologist. If I had not continued to do breast exams past menopause, I would have had a different outcome. I was 61 when I was diagnosed. I switched radiologists.
