Peri-menopause & DCIS?

I am 46 years old, and for the last couple of years have had strong hormonal shifts, night sweats, etc. that indicate that I'm peri-menopausal.  And now I've been diagnosed with DCIS - just had a lumpectomy, and am considering my radiation options.

My gut feeling is that the hormonal pulses contributed to the formation of DCIS.  Does anyone know if this could be a contributing factor, and what does that suggest for treatment?  It seems to me that if I will be in this peri-menopausal state for the next few years, that another area of DCIS might occur??

Good questions.  My guess is that, since you had a lumpectomy and are having radiation, and you are ER+, you will get something like Tamoxifen as a follow up. Whether or not hormonal pulses were a contributing factor may never be determined.  What matters now is what you do going forward.  Ask the oncologist these questions and let us know what he says.  I've often asked myself the same questions - diagnosed at 47, large area of DCIS, in menopause, ER+PR+, etc.

    Be well,

My guess is that peri-menopause has nothing to do with being diagnosed with DCIS.  I was diagnosed in Oct. 09 with DCIS.  I just turned 40 in Aug. and am not even close to menopause.  DCIS is a slowing growing cancer.  I was told that it had probably been there for 5-10 years before I was diagnosed. (I went to my first mammogram) Hope this helps a little.  Good Luck!
