I am looking for some opinions. On Feb 4th my mother had a mastectomy. Friday of last week she saw the surgeon who said he found cancer in three of the five lymph nodes. She had an appointment today that she canceled to remove the drain. She said it was still draining too much. This morning she admitted she had symptoms that she had previously not discussed with us. She said she had redness around the breast before the surgery, the nipple changed color rapidly and became white and the breast was warm to the touch. She said the nipple changed and shriveled between the mammogram and the appointment with the surgeon. However- they removed a 4.5 cm lump. One problem is that she does not listen to details when she visits the doctor. She appears to have all the symptoms of the rapidly changing breast with the redness, the warmth and the nipple changes- but then she had the lump which appears inconsistent. I called the surgeon today and asked him if she had IBC and he acted surprised and said " why did your mother say that?"  Do we think she has a regular tumor stage IIB with breast changes or does she have undiagnosed IBC with a rare tumor? I would just like some opinions

Thanks ( number two of five children who's mother was just diagnosed and treated)

I only have IBC, so can not really help you out on this. However there are other women on here who can tell you they have had a tumor, had it removed then found out they also had IBC afterwards. So, yes, I think it is possible. Hopefully one of them will get on here and be able to help you out. Sorry for you and your family. I know this is not what any of us wanted to happen to any of us. God Bless and take care.    Leisa

I was diagnosed with stage IIIB IBC last May and I had a 7cm tumor. The mammograms and ultrasounds found nothing, luckily for me a Radiologist recommended a MRI and that showed the tumor. I did not have any typical symptoms of IBC, no redness or warmness, just a change in skin appearance. I had chemotherapy first and it completely got rid of the tumor, the a bilateral mastectomy and radiation. I am considered cancer-free now. I would ask for the MRI, that radiologist saved my life. Hope all goes well for your mom. Missy

I was diagnosed with ibc w/bone metastasis & 3.5cm tumor.  I had all the signs at diagnosis-half of red warm breast with orange like dimpled skin and also the tumor.  Because of the tumor, I had a biopsy right away but even the radiologist specialist detected ibc.  Due to metastasis to the bones; my oncologist recommended chemo & hormone therapy only --no surgery or radiation.  Just finished my last (8) TAC chemo and onto hormone therapy with Femara.  I am also getting Zometa monthly for my bone metastasis.

Should seek an oncologist for further treatment.
