Of course I am affraid of upcoming chemo, but is it a coincidence, or has anyone noticed a link between women who have had chemo & reoccurence of breast cancer? I know it sounds crazy & this is just from observation alone, but it seems like only the women I know who have had chemo, had reocurrence of breast cancer.  Any thoughts on this? Please?

Carolblue ~ I think you would have to know a lot more about the diagnosis of each woman you know who has had a recurrence after having had chemo, such as the type of bc they had and the stage at which is was diagnosed.  As you may know, some bcs are just extremely aggressive, so it could be a case where nothing would have prevented a recurrence, rather than the chemo somehow factoring into the recurrence, which I think is what you are questioning.  I would also be curious to know how long ago the women you mentioned had their treatment because, as you may know, we now have a whole new third generation of chemo drugs, plus we now have Herceptin for Her2+ bc, both of which have made huge improvements in outcomes over even 10 years ago.  The other thing is that sadly and frustratingly, bc is just one of those cancers that can hide out and reappear years down the road, no matter what we do.

Have you had the Oncotype-DX test to be sure you and your oncologist understand its benefit to you?   Deanna

Thanks for that reply. Chemo is so damaging to the body, I have to wonder if it kills any natural ability to fight future cancers.  Yes, I had the Oncotype-Dx.  My score was 35 (24% greater than normal risk for reoccurence) :(
