Taxol question
So my nose has been bleeding just a little this last week - just a few spots on the tissue here and there. Today, it was a honest to goodness nosebleed. I remember some people mentioning this SE, but I was wondering if it continually got worse throughout treatment? I've still got 9 to go.
It took me a lot longer to shake my "treatment blues" this time, too. I'm hoping that was just coincidence and that's not going to be cumulative, too?

I got blood noses, nothing major, but I did get some. I think it has to do with drying of the mucous glands (???I may be wrong here) I got them when I was pregnant too.
((((Hugs))))) to you, the Taxatore really did a number on me emotionally. I did see a Oncology psychiatrist (after having a total awful snotty blubber to my Onc!!) which helped - are you seeing anyone? Might not hurt. The whole taxane experience was really difficult for me. (but remember, you will get through it)
-
I didn't have nose bleeds but I did get sores inside my nose. It stayed dry and hurt some, I just used some spray and it helped. As for the blues part, I don't remember feeling down on Taxol. During A/C I was a mess and during Rads I was a basket case though.
-
I had nosebleeds too, and sores in my nose. I used a gel - think it was called rhinogel, or something like that. Ask the pharmacist to recommend something for you. I felt better putting a bunch of that in my nose before bed.
-
Thanks, Kerry! The first week I was relieved b/c it was SO much easier than AC. Last week I noticed I felt a little off. This week was more of a battle to keep out of the dumps, so I started wondering if it was the chemo/associated drugs. I'll keep the psych in mind if it gets too bad, though. I just want to be through this part. I want to quit worrying if every little thing I do or eat might interfere with the chemo - the one shot nature of this is terrifying. I wish I were one of those people who could just put total faith in the onc and go with the flow.
-
Hi Kimber....
Not nearly as much as with AC. Yuck. Overall, I feel much better with Taxol, but more tired on Days 3 and 4 than with AC. Some joint pain, but no worse than after something like a good hike. No neuropathy.
I did a ride today and couldn't believe how much easier it was to breathe than at the same point in the 2 week cycle with AC. Don't need a major nap afterwards either.
I didn't get "treatment blues", but I did get a major case of the drags. Would look at work and say "later". My free weights could have weighed 100 pounds. But I lifted them!!!
Was better by Day 5 and mostly fine today. Didn't want to go cycling in the rain, but that had nothing to do with Taxol. Finally kicked myself in the butt and got out the door. Feel energized now.
As a point of information, if you can get outside and walk for about 15 minutes each day, do it. Helps with mood and problems with sensory deprivation. Excused only if black ice outside.
My red cell counts are coming back up vs AC. Makes an enormous difference in my overall energy. Good thing as my ship cometh in with consulting work. - Claire

Thanks all. I'm making a note about the rhinogel. I'm still hoping that maybe I'm just going through a little rough patch and the emotional stuff won't get as bad as it did with AC!
-
Claire - I still exercise daily and get outside whenever it's not cold and raining. I'm not down all the the time, but my mood can swing there with no warning and no apparent cause - ugh! Weird, though, my RBC is going down much lower than it did with AC.
-
I have just enough of nosebleeds every morning to be very annoying.Humidifier and saline nasal spray helps some, but I think I would like to know more about the gel.
-
Kimber...
You may not have had 6 infusions of AC. I would have been just fine with there had been only 4, but I got two bonus ones. (Design of SWOG 0221 for once every 2 week arm.)
I am also getting Taxol once every 2 weeks, not weekly. Not sure which it is for you (sorry, don't remember). Or could be every 3 weeks.
Feeling energized right now as just putting chicken liver pate into crocks. Have one for me and one for my neighbor who is making dinner for me. Had to taste generously to get seasonings OK
We'll see if adding cornichons slows down his time to eat.....doubt it. - Claire

Kimber--maybe two things going on for you. My nose has been bleeding a bit the last couple of days, too and I haven't had taxol since 2003! The humidity is so low right now, unusually so for the South, and the air is dry and cold. My nose lining has had trouble adjusting to this artic air. I've increased the humidity in the house (by boiling water) and I seem better.
-
Weesa - It's hard to say which is worse with this crazy weather - the dry air or my electric & gas bill - lol! The snow sure is fun, though. I woke up with another nosebleed and a head cold to go with it, so DH hooked the humidifier back up (thought our super-cold weather was over for the year - HA!) and we have it running on high. Hoping that helps and Spring comes soon for all of us!
-
Kimber-
I've now done 8 of 12 Taxols. After the first Taxol I hardly felt anything and I remember being really disappointed after number 3 that I was feeling so bad. I was afraid that it would just continue getting worse. Well, when I started thinking about it, I realized that it probably takes about 3 weeks for the effects of the Taxol to leave our bodies. So even though we are getting a 1/3 dose each week, we still have the Taxol from 2 weeks ago and 1 week ago in our bodies affecting us. Our bodies aren't getting the "full dose" until the third Taxol. This is just my own private reasoning, but it did seem to make sense with how I felt. I haven't felt any worse after the third or fourth Taxol. It goes up and down each time- maybe related to how much I work or rest. It doesn't seem to be cumulative in my case.
And the nose!!! That has been a real plague for me! My nose gets clogged up absolutely constantly with bloody, crusty gunk that drives me crazy! Whatever comes out of my nose is always bloody but I have only had a few real "bloody noses". It seems to me that it is only the top layer of skin inside the nose that is raw and is constantly trying to make a scab. Sorry if this is way TMI.... Anyway, I generally wake up in the morning with both nostrils completely clogged and breathing through my mouth. This is, for sure, my most irritating SE, but it hasn't gotten any worse after the first few weeks.
I remember after 3 treatments thinking it was going SO slowly and that I would never get through it. Well, all of a sudden I had done 8 and I can now see the end of the tunnel. You'll see, now that you are in the swing of things, those treatment days will just sneak up on you and seem to fly by!
-
My nosebleeds didn't happen till the last 3 weeks of treatment. But looking back this was also the time when my skin was so dry I'd have to apply lotion a couple of times to make a difference. We were going through a dry spell in the normally humid Pacific Northwest. Hopefully the humidifier and gel will help.
-
Kimber...I finished 12 weeks of Taxol two weeks ago. I never had a bloody nose, but my nose was often very dry and sometimes was so plugged up that I had to breathe through my mouth (mainly at night). I used Afrin nasal spray and it worked to open up the plugged feeling and, at least temporarily, relieved the dryness.
I found that consistently on Day 3 after TX I felt really down. I didn't experience this on AC and am normally not a "down" person. It was so consistent that I attribute it to the Taxol. I didn't take anything for it because it normally passed after that day or so. I might add that Day 3 was also the day I was most tired...so perhaps the tiredness contributed to feeling down.

You know, i think there is also a element of just being worn down from being on Chemo for so long, and not be imminently about to end.
I really hit the wall in the middle. I started to feel like it had taken over my whole life. I was in a chemo group and it happened to a lot of us at about this time. I wish I could say something to help, all I can really say is just put your head down and keep going. The only way to the end is by keeping on going.
-
Kimber ...funny thing happened to me my nurse was in on her weekly visit..."So any ses to report?"...bam nose bleed ,right in front of her !!I had one more after that this was while i was on AC.
Treatment blues oooh yeea ...if i remember correctly about day 4 after chemo ...the floodgates opened and very blue and teary...put it down to roid crash !!

It makes sense that it's starting to affect me now that I'm a few weeks in. I even remember my onc mentioning that this one (Taxol/Herceptin) is easy up until around the fourth week. At least I'm finally in single digits - 9 to go!
-
I have daily nosebleeds along with night congestion. It started with the first Taxol. I am three weeks from my last Taxol. My onc says it is not concerning unless the nosebleeds do not stop after a few minutes. Ug. It is sooo annoying.
-
Hi Kim-I have been meaning to emil you.
Nose Bleed:
My nose is dried up and slightly bloody. When I blow my nose there is blood mixed in-not a lot but it's there. My nose hurts so I have been putting vasoline inside it and that has helped. I assumed the blood was from the inside being dried up and nasty.
Mood:
My mood/depression seems worse then on the AUX part. I was attributing it to the decatron. benadryl so they lowered the doseage on both this past week but I still got really really down though sleeping was NOT affected. Infact, I was thinking I was or am going through menopause b-c of how down I am. I am exercising quite a bit-but that is not even touching the depression.
Xanax helps-I refuse to go on antidepressants b-c I will have to go off them when I start tamoxifin.
Anyway hang in there only 8 weeks to go!!!!
-
I get the bloody nose as well. My onc said saline spray was fine to use and my naturopath gave me a cream that I use with a little q-tip. It all helps tremendously.
Not sure if this helps, but even with major exercise there are days the week after treatment that I am down. I am not going to use the word depressed...don't want to give that any energy
But I started attibuting it to the chemo. I keep a journal, and I started noticing that the clouds always lifted after a few days. So I keep those pages marked to remind myself that these feelings pass and are not "me", but the drugs. I only have 2 treatments left, almost didn't get chemo this week with my counts being so low and I am just ignoring all se's as much as I can...HANG IN THERE!!!!

I came to hate Wednesdays. The IV was on Monday so by Wed I either woke up with a fog or it would come over me later in the day. Usually it would only last for 24 hrs but a couple of times it stuck around for 2 days. And if I was awake at the time I could actually feel it lift in an hour or two. It was like the feeling of a terrible head cold without all the other symptoms.
I never figured out if it was the steroids or the taxol. Taxol was my first regimen so it wasn't because I was at the end of treatment. And the intensity was random, so some weeks worse and others not as bad. I just couldn't figure out a pattern to try and help reduce the effect.
-
Don't discount the "late midwinter" factor either. This is a time of year that people in normal life are affected by lack of sunlight and get depressed.
I haven't had any depression or fog throughout treatment. I could be jinxing myself here. Now, I do seriously drag on Days 3 and 4 of Taxol. Wouldn't call it depression but sure don't do anything with any enthusiasm. Also quite achy in my knees and shin bones.
I did notice that I am super sensitive to sugar in the morning. My building had a get-together for residents the other day and all I had was orange juice and a small slice of very sweet coffee cake. I went into a major sugar crash. Fortunately, was able to eat enough protein to stabelize my system prior to the Skype interview for some consulting work I had later.
I also think it helps that I was post menopausal going in so have less hormonal havoc. BTW - you guys will all be missing the PMS in your 40s fun, so there is a silver lining here.
As for the achiness, well I am normally aching from some sports injury anyway. Nothing from the whole BC experience has hurt nearly as much as my injured shoulder did a year ago. Right now my butt and thighs are aching from the hills I cycled yesterday. I wasn't able to do them with AC, and was thrilled yesterday when I could.
I will have my last Taxol in something like 7 weeks.....itchy to be done right now.
Right now, have to watch being blue.....but blue language as I am doing my first project in Office 2007 and nothing works as I think it should. At least not the big project coming right up after this one!

Hi Kimber,
I just had my first round of Taxol (4 dose dense/every 2 weeks) last Tuesday. Although I haven't had nosebleeds (yet) I started having intense pelvic pain on day 3. Almost like a super bad period without the bleeding (haven't had one since chemo started). Got so bad I needed oxycodone for it. Seems to be better today, just some lingering aching in that region. So weird too because when I spoke with the RN she said it was probably constipation---which I thought odd as it didn't feel like that, and when I did have a BM the next day the pain actually got worse---so I still don't think it was that.
I did have terrible dryness during the A/C and got some saline spray for my nose. Luckily never got bleeds from it though.
Keep us posted on how you are doing!

Well, this Taxol stuff is certainly unpredictable. My nose is worse this week, despite running the humidifier day and night, but not too terrible once I get past first thing in the morning. However, no blues this week - yay! It's so weird that I actually feel better than last week, but I'll take it.
-
I had what I called the bloody nose. Not necessarily nose bleeds, but that nasty icky bloody stuff all of the time, in addition to my nose feeling really dry and I always felt like I had a lot of pressure on my sinuses. It started with AC and went right through Taxol. It got better 3 -4 weeks after I finished chemo. During that time the onc suggested Ocean Spray (or a saline spray) and KY Jelly and/or Vaseline. Both helped my nose to feel better.
Hope it gets better.
