please stop minimizing my diagnosis

Hello again,
I had my excisional bx this past Friday. Doc says everything looked good but will have pathology today or tomorrow. I was suppose to call in this morning and set up a follow-up appointment with my BS which is normally a quicky call...the secretary asked a couple of questions but then I was told I needed to talk to her assistant to do that ????? Of course, that sent up a red flag.
Icky gut feelings. That was at 9:30 this morning...it is now nearly 12:30 and still no call. I think I will wait until after lunch and give them another call.
Thanks for listening.

Younggm - hoping its nothing and that everything is good!

call them until they get sick of answering the phone AS you keep hoping it is nothing- we all hope the best for you and praying that it is nothing!

I agree....I visited an oncologist for the first time today. The first thing out of his mouth today was "isn't it nice to know you do NOT have cancer?"
I was diagnosed a month ago with stage 0, DCIS, I have had a surgical biopsy, a lumpectomy (which is really my "half-breast-ectomy") - multi-focal and the margins STILL aren't clear...
my breast surgeon clearly states I have cancer...
and this oncologist says I don't....but says I need a mastectomy.
So, if I don't have cancer, why a mastectomy?? you know???
argh!!!!!!!
I'm frustrated, and now so very confused.....
both the oncologist and surgeon are recommending a left side mastectomy. But I'm leaning toward a bilateral (even though I REALLY don't want it)......sigh.... -
As a male friend of mine said on Saturday, when I was worrying aloud if I'd ever have sex again "There's nothing a good boob job can't fix!"
I politely explained that if he ever said that again, he'd be bitch-slapped.

Oh my.... male friends can be SO helpful, huh!??!?! (Dying laughing at your reply to him... thanks for the much-needed giggle!) -
SWEATY did you also inform him that we ladies call that "SEX FOR 1"- man- bitch slap him for me too! Twice.
younggram ----have the called- do you need us to march onto their doorstep??? a bunch of halfcrazed women with and without boobs could make angry mob- or atleast look like one until we get what we want-

robinlbe-
the first oncologist i saw told me the same thing. I knew id shop around for someone else before the appointment was over. . and im so glad I did! I still remember the oncologists almost smug look. My huz says it was probably because he's used to seeing so many people with invasive type cancers, that to him, it is nothing.
For me, in my little corner of the world, its everything. Once i found an onco I liked-i was completely relieved-I stopped worrying (as much) and felt confident in the choices I made. I had no idea how much better id feel if i believed in my dr - good luck on your journey - sorry youre here, but glad you found us!

Melissa,
I got the call and the results are B9. YEAH!!!! ....however (there is always a however)...she wants to talk to me a bit further when I go in on Friday. I'm a little stressed but I'm guessing the worse she can say is that I still have ADH and I need to be proactive...she was also wanting me to persue tamoxifin after I got through this surgery. I guess I will wait until Friday to see what is up but for now...it is all good!!!
Thank you for being so kind to me through all this...I don't know what I would have done without this board. You all are awesome ladies...but trust me...if I ever need anyone to intervene on my behalf it will certainly be you
...I'll post any changes after Friday.

Yes this thread is a great find for those of us that need understanding friends- like all of us need, right?
The Onc situation , well it is true that they see the worst of the worst, so shouldn't they get our fears? I think they should, and I agree, when you find one willing to be nice, that you can have confidence in and that treats you as if you have just been told the worst news ever- then you will feel better.Rhonda,GREAT NEWS!!! All though I was looking forward to THE MARCH! LOL
have a great day everone.

I first read this thread about a week ago, and thought how lucky I had been with my doctors. At that point I had seen two BS, two PS, my GYN, and my family doc. All of them called it cancer and none minimized it. My family doc said "as far as diagnosis go, this is the best but it is still cancer and it still sucks".
I decided to do DEIP reconstruction, and none of my BS/PS handle that, so I had to find new ones. I went to a cancer center in town to find the new BS and his nurse repeatedly called it "pre cancer" and the BS called it "pre malignant". I wanted to ask if he had read my path report from biopsy, because that specifically stated malignant cells found. I was angry when I left the office. My husband felt they were trying to downplay it as to not to make me worry.
It is like that old expression; if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck..it's a duck! It looks like cancer, it has potential to spread into my body like cancer, it will require a mastectemy and meds like cancer....it's cancer !
-
I noticed how many DCIS had repeat dx dates- that is why I had a BMX- yes it is scary and no one ever offered to transplant my PRECA breast onto their chest because it was so NON cancerous that they were willing to "breast sit" a while!
-
bumping for newcomers.
This is an interesting thread!
-
yeah, I posted on here earlier....BEFORE my mastectomy....it was the day I met with the first oncologist. He walked in and cheerfully said, "well, the good news is is that you don't have cancer!" He's not my oncologist, but if he were now, and if he said that to me now, I'd probably take off my shirt, push my bare flat chest in his face, then slap him real hard and ask him why in the world are my ribs showing like a little boy's except I don't even have nipples??!?!?!?!?!?
OK, OK,....I'm calmer now ......
I did visit another oncologist....she was, at least, a little sweeter about it, but she did keep calling it a pre-cancer. Yes, yes, I know....it was caught before it was invasive. "lucky" me....
But it's all treated the same. Insurance treats it the same. It was a living time bomb inside of me. So CALL it cancer, for crying out loud. For some stupid reason, it actually makes me feel better if you CALL it cancer, you know?!?!? I didn't go through all of this for a broken toenail!!!
sigh....
-
yeah- I am not sure how this make us feel better but it does- I am sorry you ended here with us- at least we are a good bunch of non ca folks.
-
OH MY GOD!!!! I was just diagnosed with DCIS and after reading the info on this site I was feeling like I was lucky and thinking a little OP surgery, a little rad and I'm done. Reading these posts have me shaking in my boots and changing my panties!
-
Thank you for making me laugh, SisterLister!
-
Seriously, I am now scared cacaless. I meet my surgeon for the first time on Friday. What do I expect? What do I ask? HELP!!!!!
-
SisterLister, It just depends upon the margins, and if your DCIS is unifocal or multifocal as to if you have a lumpectomy and rads, or have to do the MX......
That's how it was with me....For now, try to relax (right!!)......read, research, and keep asking questions. I ended up with a total of three surgeries altogether....
We're all here for you.....thinking and praying for you....I was diagnosed 11/6/09, so I know what you're going through....
blessings...robin
-
SisterLister - why don't you start by telling us what you know so far.
Did you have a mammogram that led to a biopsy? Do you have a lump you can feel or not? Do you have copies of your radiology or pathology reports? (If not - GET THEM.)
Without knowing what has happened to you, it's very hard to be helpful!
