    Don't Gloss Over It

What could be more harmless than a little streak of shine on your rosy lips? Well, turns out lots of things, because the shine in lip-gloss comes from petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a byproduct of oil drilling, and when you spread it on your lips, you end up eating it, which is essentially the same as drinking gasoline. Add up the amount of lip-gloss the average woman uses (and consumes) over a decade, and it equals 7 pounds. The European Union has banned many petroleum jelly products, and experts are concerned they could be linked to cancer. Women with breast cancer have twice the levels of hydrocarbons (substances found in petroleum jelly) in their breasts than women who haven't had breast cancer.

    Hi Sheri,

Can you cite a source for your information?  I'm interested in reading more about the hydrocarbon levels.  Also, there was a list of "safe" cosmetics somewhere - did you see that thread?  If not, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Sheri, You should consider buying your cosmetics from a good natural food store.  There are so many lip glosses that have a jojoba or castor oil base...Petroleum based cosmetics are so easy to avoid and the choices in the natural  health and beauty arena have really become so sophisticated as well as safe.  Some of my favorite lip glosses are available from Burt's Bees, Alba, Dr Hauschka, Jason's, Kiss My Face, Aubrey Organics,  and my favorite is from a small company called Primitive,  Their lip glosses have a kind of a light vanilla smell and come in the softest pinks and earth tones and are vegan as well.   There are so many products out there for women seeking safe solutions...

Sheri ~ Thanks for posting about this.  www.cosmeticsdatabase.com is a great source for checking a product's ingredients and overall safety rating compared to similar products.  Surprisingly, even some of the better known natural brands aren't all that safe.    Deanna
