I am on the triple negative breast cancer vaccine trial..YEAH!  I just received my first shot last week, January 21st in Cleveland, Ohio.  I live in Minnesota and found out about this trial last year during my chemo treatment.  I made MANY phone calls and finally made an appointment with the Doctor in October.  550 people inquired about the trial and they took 17 so far.  It is all very interesting...I was feeling very sick from the vaccine..flu-like with a very hight fever, 103 for three days.  The Doctor was thrilled with my reaction...saying that my immune system was waking up with the vaccine.  This is exactly what they want to have happened.  Our immune systems did not see the first cancer cell as an invader.  To prevent cancer in the future, our immune systems need to read cancer as a bad thing.  This is what the vaccine does to our immune systems...it wakes it up!  I was diagnosed last December, 2008 with stage 1 IDC. I am 44 years old with NO family history of cancer.  I had a double mastectomy on New Year's Eve last year followed by 4 rounds of AC then 4 rounds of Taxol.  I had implant surgery in June of 2009.  I will receive 3 more shots then in May the cancer center in Ohio will check my immune system, via blood, to see if my system increased.  If it did, then I will receive more shots...12 total.  If it didn't, then the trial will stop for me.

I will keep you all posted with the success of the trial.  Hopefully, it will be a great vaccine for all to use after they are done with chemo!

Here is to research for TN!!!

    Take care,

    Laurel

I have looked into this trial.  You have to be completely finished with treatment, including radiation.  They are only taking 37 people...that's what the printout says.  I sure hope this is a success.  For all of us TN ladies.  Hopefully they will open this trial up to include a lot more women.  I would love to participate in this trial but I am just starting rads.  I am in the SWOG0307 trial, so at least I am doing that.

Ok, I just talked to the trial nurse at my doctors office, she is going to get more info for me.  I did read the trial and it appears to be in the very beginning phases.  I will let you all know what I find out.

Hopefully this trial will be a success and will be expanded to include more people.  If anyone hears more, please post on this thread.  Fingers crossed the trial becomes available for ladies in Canada.

Laurel - That's awesome that you got to be on this trial!!!  Thanks so much for posting - I wish you the absolute best with it!  And thanks so much for volunteering for it!  Keep us posted - hopefully they're right about kick-starting your immune system!

There's a discussion about this over at tnbcfoundation.org too.  I must have been one of the 550 that inquired about it, and just a few weeks ago I got an email back from Dr. Baar saying that they are hoping to add another 20 people to the second stage in 12-18 months.

It would be so great if they get good results with it and could open it up for a larger study!

    Here's the study link:  http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00986609?term=NCT00986609&rank=1

It is so exciting being able to chat with you all regarding triple negative!  I am in a support group but only a few of us have this exact diagnosis.  More details about the vaccine, I am #3 in line to receive the vaccine.  #4 happened the say day I was there.  If the first 17 are successful, then he will open up the trial for the next 20 in line, and so on.  Keep calling/emailing Dr. Baar if interested.  I feel like I have nothing to lose, only to gain.   It is expensive, I pay for my flight/ hotel, etc.  The trial pays for everything done at the hospital.  I still feel like I am fighting this cancer!!  Dr. Baar is VERY hopeful with the vaccine.  It is interesting dealing with the research side of things.

If you all have any personal questions, you can email me at my home email...mlkiesow@gmail.com

God luck to you all...stay healthy!  It is below zero in Minnesota today but I still went on a run!  STay strong and HEALTHY!!
