BETH Clinical Trial
Hello New Here
I will be startingg chemo on April 28th and in the Beth trial for her2+. This therapy adds Advastin to the regular TCH for early stage HER2+. I randomized to receive the Advastin. Don't know if that is good or not. Really scared about the whole process. Anyone else in this trial?
The courage I see through these posts is a major source of my abliltiy to carry on with this.
Thanks to you all.
Debbie

Sorry about that. Not very clear in that post. Was just wondering if anyone heard of it. It adds Avastin to TCH for early stage HER2+ patients.

Hi Debbie,
I'm from Canada and my Med Onc. was trying to get me to join this clinical study. Avastin added with other drugs has produced very good results in colon/rectal cancers, so they are trying to see if it will produce better results in HER2+ bc patients. There are some serious side effects attached to it though and that is why I opted not to join the trial. If you or anyone in your family have any history of blod clotting then this is not the drug for you. I was also told it can cause rectal tearing. The way I looked at it was Herceptin is already giving me very positive/high percentages, and while I do see the merit in clinical trials, I personally didn't want to expose myself to these serious SE's. Just my opinion........hope it helps a little. Best wishes to you!!

Debbie,
I am on the Beth trail now. I finished my TCH and Avastin part in January and am now on just Herceptin and Avastin. So far so good. The Avastin has caused my blood pressure to rise(it will return to normal after treatment) and they have put me on a blood pressure pill but that is really the only side effect I've had from the Avastin. I am monitored closely. Avastin is being used to help treat a lot of other forms of cancer lung, collon, brain and breast and has had positive outcomes. There is a thread somewhere on here about a trail adding Avastin for the triple negs. I got a lot of info from that thread. There are some serious SE's but I would discuss this with you onco. I did a lot or research on this before hand and discussed all this with my doctor. She felt very confident with me doing it. You have to weight the pro's and con's, for me I felt it was bonus.
If you have any other question you can PM me, I'd be happy to answer if I can. I've only run across 2 other ppl on this board on the Beth trial.
Take care.
Angie

Okay, found the thread for the triple negs...http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/6/topic/703318?page=28#idx_839. If the link doesn't work it is in the Help me get through treatment forum.
I also wanted to add that I actually had an Aunt that passed away from a blood clot hitting her heart when she was 21. So, I was tested for the clotting factor before the test and it came back negative so, I was good to for the trail.

Hi Debbie!
I'm also on the BETH trial that adds Avastin to TCH. I've had 3 so far without any side effects. And after the remaining 3, I'll continue with Herceptin and Avastin for the year. I'm scheduled to have an echocardiogram next week which will determine whether or not I can continue with Avastin because it can sometimes affect heart function. I'm a little concerned with this because I have an irregular heart beat which has gotten a bit worse with chemo. However, I'm told that it's still within the normal range and would only pose a problem if it was accompanied with chest pains, sweating, an shortness of breath.

I was offered participation in a clinical trial adding Avastin to my chemo.
I decided not to participate. At stage I, the risk vs benefit of adding Avastin didn't make seem worthwhile to me. My main concern was increased risk of stroke. At stage I with TCH, my risk of recurrence should be low so adding Avastin wouldn't improve it much. Stroke can have a long term effect and didn't seem worth it.
If I was node positive, I would have looked at it more carefully because the potential benefit is greater. In the BCIRG 006 trial of TCH, overall survival at 4 years was 91% for node postive and 98% for node negative. Disease free survival at 4 years was 82% for node negative and 93% for node positive.
I am participating in the SWOG S0307 study which is testing the effect of adding bisphosponates to treatment.

I appreciate all your input. I have decided not to participate. I was to sart my TCH + Avastin on Tues. They told me on Friday I would get the Avastin and then my family really started to look at the side effects. I am calling tomorrow to tell them it is TCH for me. My family and I came up with the same argument as bluedasher.
Thanks
Debbie

Debbie,
I think you are making the right choice. I am stage IIIc but if I were stage I I don't think I would have done it. Good luck with the rest of your treatments.
-
Hi Debbie,
I heard of the BETH trial - my onc told me that I could be one of the participants. I will be doing the TCH and then a year of Herceptic following. I was dx early stage 2b - and it was only in my left breast. I did bilateral mastectomies and have started reconstruction which will now stop until after the Herceptin next May. I opted not to do the Beth Trial because I felt that the TCH plus is considered a very aggressive form of treatment for HER2 Positive - my receptors were good so afterwards the docs will put me on a 5 year hormonal drug too. If it should re occur (Hopefully not) then I would think of studies or at that point Alastin may be approved by the FDA and trials over. I could not think of the added risks and about being studied for a ten year period. They use it for colon cancer and somefindings seem to indicate that it does not always prolong life so I do not want to damage any more organs - I wanted to leave radiation and thae other for another battle if needed. DOn't want to shoot all other options in future. What was your take? Are you going to participate?
-
Hi Debbie,
I went with the choice you did - see my other message to you.. This is Caryn54

Hi Y'all,
I'm new here. Just checking in, since the last post on this topic was a while ago. Has anyone else started the BETH trial, or does anyone have feedback on Avastin? I am starting chemo in a few weeks and struggling with this decision.
thanks
-
Hi papillon. Maybe this is too late for you. I am joining the BETH trial, provided I am not TopoII (should have the FISCH test on this this week). My reasons are that TCH (even plus Avastin) is much less hazardous than my other alternative, which is FEC + Herceptin, as antracyclines combined to Herceptin dramatically increase serious lifelong heart injury, and this risk multiplies if you are also going on five years hormonal block, as is also my case. TCH is a much milder combination, and the Avastin percentages of blood clots (up to 30%) are so high because they include minor incidents. The truth is, very few women have had severe problems with blood clots when treated with Avastin, which has been tried on all kinds of cancer patients for years.
In this light, Avastin might prove an extra bonus.
There is another thread on this topic here too, if you wish to follow it.

I'm in the BETH Trial. The only side effect I've had is a slight rise in BP. My onc gave me a low does BP pill and I've been great. I finished my chemo in July and I'll finish up the Herceptine/Bev cycles April.

Hi Wisehorn, Glad to finally hear of someone going thru the BETH trial. I am new to discussion boards, but learning! I am meeting with a research nurse on Mon. we will see after all my tests come back if I will be a candidate for the trial.my Dx: IDC,hormone receptive,HER2 positive. I had a Lt. breast mast and node removal (2 positive out of 10). I am feeling good, and healing GREAT. But I am scared, and feeling a little apprehensive about chemo and such. I would love it for you to respond. and to all our "pink" sisters.....I raise my glass of (arizona raspberry tea) and toast you all a very happy new year!!!!
-
I have decided to participate in the BETH trial and will have my first chemo treatment on Tuesday, 1/5. I will find out Monday if I will be in the control group or if I will receive Avastin. I'm not looking forward to this, but am ready to have it all in my "rear view window".

I am so glad to have found this forum. I just joined today--and I have been toiling over whether or not to join the BETH trial study. I am at this time, healing from a double mastectomy and lymph node surgery, as well as having developed web syndrome under the arm that had the lymph surg. I am leaning towards joining the study--but would love to connect with some of you who are--and aren't going to do the study. I am very fearful already of the chemo/herceptin/tomoxafin..... I am worried about adding one more drug to the cocktail! Is this crazy? I will be starting treatment around the middle to end of January. At this point, I am going through with the Her/2 testing for the study trial. Although I know I am already +, the study group is going to test again. I have two great kids 3 and 6...and I just want to do what is best. I know I can speak for all of us...I don't want to go anywhere!!! I want to be here for a long, healthy, happy life
I know Avastin has shown promising results in other types of cancers, as well as Her/2 neg. I have researched Avastin--you can only read the side effects so many times. Can anyone help?
-
mspradley--keep me posted on what happens...which group you are in. I feel your pain! I am feeling quite similar to you. Can't wait for this to all be behind me. I wish you the best of luck and I will be thinking of you.
-
Hi Naener - I wound up in the experimental group and had my first treatment yesterday. The extra bag of Avastin added another 2 hours to the already long day, but all went well. I have felt normal all day today - fatigued from not sleeping due to the steroids, but otherwise normal.
-
Naener, I totally understand how u feel about wanting all this behind u, I feel the same! I was diagnosed with IDC,er&pr+ and her2+. stage 2b, 2 lymphnodes outta 10 positive. I had a mast. on Dec 8th. I'm feeling really good. healing very well and not much pain.I have almost full range of motion back. I have decided to do the beth trial. Just had my ekg and echo done to make sure I'm heart heathy. my meds will be (not sure of the spelling)... taxotere, carboplatin and herceptin and maybe avastin. did anyone say anything to you about taking decadron before each of your chemo infusions? I guess it is suppose to help w/nausea and vomiting. another thing VERY IMPORTANT..... I didn't know this, but i've been told not to use antipersperant with aluminum. It has been proven to cause breast cancer and lymphoma. I found at walmarts and at rite-aid a deodorant called Tom's at maine. Has no aluminum, and smells & works good too! Have u found out anymore about your study.....let me know, opie
-
Dear Opie--I start chemo Feb 5th. Have not found which group I am in yet. My treatment is exactly the same as yours. (plus or minus avastin) Thanks for the deodorant tip. I have heard that before, but haven't found a good one that works. I will try the one you suggest. Let's keep in touch. I will also ask about the decadron. I will keep you posted
Take care. Naener

Started the BETH trial in Sept. 09. Regimen included TCH+Avastin in 6 treatments over 18 weeks. The TC portion of chemo was really hard on me. I could not work and leading a "normal" was impossible. I was terribly worried about being able to go back to work and having a normal life during the Avastin+Herceptin portion of my chemo. Doc said this part of the treatment would be a breeze compared to what I had been through. He was correct. Began H+A 1/19, thankfully SE's are minor for me. Runny nose, achy joints, some fatigue and higher than normal blood pressure (which doesn't bother me or require meds). I slather on Cetaphil lotion everyday to deal with my dry skin. Last echo showed a small decrease in heart function. I am able to work and lead a relatively normal life so far -- some days I just go to bed a little early and let my husband bond with his children!
-
opiee002 -- I have included a web address from the Scott Hamilton CARES initiative that explains the use of decadron. http://chemocare.com/BIO/decadron.asp
The decadron gave me "fits" -- hyperactivity, insomnia and lots of eating -- felt like I could conquer the world for three days!
-
Struggling with the decision myself. Starting TCH on Feb. 8th. My oncologist is one of the study authors for a UCLA trial adding Avastin-- I think it's part of the BETH trial, but regardless, it's the same thing. On the plus side, this research may well help others in the long run, and the Avastin (if I was put in that group) might help my odds, too. On the other hand, it's another drug in my body for a year. I gather participants get a little more in-depth care, too.
I wish I had a crystal ball to tell me what to do....
-
Hello Writer--I totally understand how you feel. I went ahead with the study--got approved for everything, and was randomized to not be in the avastin group. I start my Chemo on the 5th of Feb. I think no matter what drugs you are going to be on--it's just plain old SCARY! But I did like the fact that I could be helping other women with this study--and like you said, participants get a little more in-depth care. I also did a pro's and con's list to help me decide. As well as reminding my self that God is in control. I hope this helps you. A crystal ball would be great though, I must say! I could have used one from the day of diagnosis. But I find that talking to survivors and women who are going through this is the best medicine. The best of luck to you. I will be thinking of you on the 8th!
-
Thank you b00ked for the info. And Opie--keep us posted on how you are doing.
-
Naener, thanks for the positive words, and I'll be thinking of you on the 5th! You're right ahead of me, sister.
I decided to take part in the trial. Will find out later next week which group I'll be in. I decided I had t pay it forward. If it wasn't for the women who did the Herceptin trials 5-10 years ago, I wouldn't be getting the benefits today.
-
I got randomized into the Avastin group. I start Monday: TCH + Avastin. Will be a long day, but I think this is the right thing to do.
Plus they'll pay for my parking now.
-
Hi Writer--I just read your post. I wanted to let you know that today--my first day of chemo went well. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. So I wanted to ecourage you for Monday. You will do just fine. Bring a cozy blanket from home, a good book (nothing on cancer!), a good lunch, and someone you love and trust to go through this with you. It is only day 1 for me... so we will see how the next couple
days go! Best of luck to you, and keep me posted. Go do some cancer bootie kickin.

As I mentioned back in January, I am participating in the BETH trial and and in the Avastin arm. I have my 6th and final tx tomorrow of TCH plus Avastin and then continue every three weeks of Herceptin and Avastin through December. I am wondering if my hair will grow back during the Herceptin + Avastin only infusions... I would easily trade 6 more months of baldness for restored health, but am just wondering what others' experiences were.
-
how's everyone doing with Beth trial??
My mom's needs to decide whether to participate or not.
