hi, i'm fourteen, going on fifteen...and I've recently found a hard pea-sized lump on my left breast, about half an inch away from my nipple. I told my mom, and she's definately scared and made an appointment for me tomorrow. We searched through the internet, and a lot of girls who have had the same lump ended up having cancer. It could be a cyst....but I am scared to death right now, i'm still so young, and even worse, my Aunt had breast cancer also, yet recently survived. My mother thinks that it could be because of my bad eating habbits. If you've had a lump that relates to mine, please help me determine...... *sigh.* I guess time will tell. Cry

Honey, there are NOT a lot of girls your age who have had a lump and ended up having cancer.  Unfortunately when we are scared, searching the internet can be a bad thing.  We end up only seeing or remembering the things that scare us.  I know I do.  Your mom is doing the right thing getting you an appointment right away.  See the doctor tomorrow, have the lump checked out and let us know how you are doing.  It will be o.k.

I agree with Ozzi.  Not a lot of 14 year old girls have breast cancer.  Many times, just normal puberty and developing breasts can feel lumpy -- especially around the nipple area.  You are doing the right thing getting it checked out.  Good for you for sharing your concerns with your mom and not keeping it to yourself.  Just remember -- even when you have normal mother/daughter squabbles --- your mother is always going to be your best friend and the one who will always love you the most.  (Do I sound like a mother!!?? Wink)  After you see the doctor, please post again and tell us the results!

Definitely get it checked out, but you need to know that there are lots of reasons why breasts can be lumpy and the vast majority of them do not involve cancer - esp at your age.  It is however still possible.  You are doing the right thing by getting it checked out.  Make sure your dr investigates thoroughly and don't let them say you are too young and it doesn't need checking. If your dr dismisses your concerns make sure you get a second opinion and/or a referral to a breast surgeon who will take you seriously.

Good luck - best way to stop your mum whinging about your eating habits is to eat your veggies Wink

Regarding Teens with Breast Cancer: Yesterday our support group (in Chillicothe, Ohio) was introduced to another 14 year old who had recently been diagnosed and is having surgery next week. Not much has been said publicly about how she discovered it or what kind of surgery is taking place. But there are groups  that center on breast cancer in teens and younger women, like the Young Survivor's Coalition. You and your family or very close girlfriends can research them, as well as BreastCancer.org, and I am sure you will find some good support and info.
