i am meeting with a surgeon later this week.  the surgeon is a general surgeon with an "interest" in bariatric surgery but does general surgery incl. breast.  Now I'm not the sharpest knife in the block, but..........general surgeon? bariatric interest? does breast as well?  is a general surgeon ok?  conflicted and confused -  would appreciate feedback and advice thanks.

Please make an appointment with someone who specializes in breast surgery.  Your doctor's recommendation is just that, but you can choose someone else.  Try checking your insurance plan to see what breast surgeons are participating. Even if your pathology turns out well, a breast surgeon will know the possibilities better and usually leave you with a better appearance.

Don't know where you are in the country but in most major centers general surgeons can do breast surgery,(lumpectomy and mastectomy) but there are surgeons who specialize in breasts. That means they do extra training!!! If you want reconstruction , you might try to get another oinion and talk to a plaxtic surgeon who does breasts. Bariatric surgery is something that is often done best by people who do it every day. So ask for more opinions! Good luck. If I can be of any more help let me know.

I would strongly recommend that you go to several breast surgeons and consult with  plastic surgeons as well. Once you have seen them you will have a better idea of your course of treatment i.e. lumpectomy or mastectomy. I found that that the time after you are first diagnosed was the scariest as there are so many surgical options but once you meet with them and have a clearer picture of what your options are, having a plan of action will make you feel much more in control of the situation.

    good luck to you

thanks for the advice  i was just not comfortable with that choice of surgeon.  i changed it, now i'm seeing somebody who specialises in both breast and gastric!!!  maybe i can get a tummy tuck at a discount, lol! i'm not having a mast. at the least it will be an excisional biopsy and at the most, a lumpectomy.  my appt is next tuesday - ugh!  the waiting begins!

    Hi Golden,

i love reading your posts! you and i are on a similar track.  I had my steriotatic biopsy nov. 24, came back positive for DCIS, grade 1-2,  and my lumpectomey jan 7.  The lumpectomey was nothing! i have taken 4 tylenols at the most since surgery.  i will say, the wire guide thing was nasty, but you may not need that.

I am seeing a genetic counselor tomorrow- was it suggested to you to get that test done? It shows if you may have a genetic disposition for ovarian/breast cancer, and if its heridtary.

If Im negative, I'll meet with a radiation oncologist for radiation.

    Keep me posted!
