What else could it be....

I have had some off and on pains on the right side of my right breast over the last few months.  I did not really think much of it, never really felt real concerned about breast cancer as cancer does not really run in either of side of my family with the exception of my great aunt and one cousin.  I thought the pain was just muscle pain.  I also had he occasional itchy nipples too, but again not really a concern.  Then about a month ago I started getting an occassional burning sensation in the right side of my right breast that would come and go.  Now as of a week ago I have had a constant painful burning pain that is at times almost unbearable still mostly on my right side on my right breast all the way to over to I think my lymph node under my arm pit.  I am not real sure if it is in my lymph node or not but the burning seems to almost generate from that area.  My right breast also itch, but its like an internal itch, not necessarily the outer skin.

I went and saw my pcp yesterday who did a breast exam and of course no lump, which i knew there wasn't cause I have been looking for one since this  burning pain started.  She told me it may be just nerve pain, but is sending me to see a breast surgeon asap for an ultrasound of my breas.  So from what I have seen and read I cannot find any other reason for these issues.  The feeling reminds me of when I was engorged when I was breast feeding.  I don't have mestrual cycles as I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago.  I really feel that nerve pain is a stretch and I am thinking my doctor only said that so I would jump conclusions.  But seriously IBC seems to be the only thing that makes any sense.

A lot of times IBC is misdiagnosed as an infection like mastitis. It's possible that it could be an infection but I'm relieved your pcp is arranging an ultrasound. If the breast surgeon thinks it's IBC, she'll get you in for a biopsy asap as IBC is very aggressive as I'm sure you've read. I don't recall  any other possibilities besides an infection or IBC when I was doing my searches when my symptoms started. I entered my symptoms on the Mayo Clinic site and Web MD site.

I was officially diagnosed with IBC in 2/08. My pcp had never seen anything like it but moved quickly. I was in for an ultrasound the next day and he scheduled an appt. with a surgeon for the following day. I had a biopsy which turned into a lumpectomy two days later. Within two weeks of my first appt., I was seeing an onc, having an MRI, and a port implanted. I started chemo before the month was out.

I do remember my pcp & surgeon asking me if I was certain I hadn't had some sort of an injury as I had gotten what looked like bruises on my breast along with the redness, swelling, itching and sharp pain. Perhaps that's why your pcp is thinking as possible nerve pain?

You'll be in my thoughts while you wait for things to move along. The waiting is the hard part!

So my PCP is having me a see a breast surgeon tomorrow.  I am glad she isn't wasting tme, but a little shook up that she got me in so fast.  I really hate this waiting to find out stuff I am about to crawl out of my skin.  But I just can't find anything else that seems to match this and I am getting very stressed out.  I don't want to go through being misdianosed and having this missed if I do actually have it.
