Finding the Right "Alternative"

I have little cheapy fiber-fill ones and I love them. They're light weight and cool. Then,.I went to the fabric store and bought a band expander thingy from the bra section. Works perfect.
-
Hi Sher,
I did get them and I like them, plus you can't beat the price! But I actually find I prefer my Still You Illusions, which are a bit heavier, just enough to stay in place well. But I can wear the Fiber Filled Pads really comfortably in my Still You Tank Top (camisole), so I'm sure I'll get plenty of use out of them.

Hi Barbara
Glad to hear you like the Still You Fiber Filled forms too! I ordered Illusions from a local supplier and when I called to check on them, found out that they were never ordered! According to Still You, they are listed as a supplier for their products, but the store will not order them for me. So now I'll need to find another supplier (none nearby) that will order and bill my insurance or just pay for them myself. I have a couple of bra type tops that always ride up and think a little weight would help, but my Amoena Contact Lite forms are too heavy and the triangular shape doesn't work either. Do you know how the weight of the Illusions and Amoena Contact Lite compare?
-
I think the Illusions would be quite a bit lighter, if your Contact Lights are size 3 or larger.
-
Yes, my Contact Lites are size 4, but I'm wearing the Fiber Filled Pads in a C. Maybe I should drop back to a size B Illusions? If you wouldn't mind one more question...............assuming you purchased the same size Fiber Filled Pads as your Illusions..........do they look exactly alike in size, width, projection, shape, etc?
Thanks!!!
-
I bought size A in both the Illusions and Fiber Filled Pads. It's interesting. When I compare them off me, they are almost exactly the same in size, width, shape, and projection (maybe the Fiber Filled is a very slight amount less projection), but when I wear them, the Illusions look quite a bit bigger. I think the filling in the Illusions pushes forward when they're on my chest. On me, they look like a small B, while the Fiber Filled look like an A. Hope this helps!

I am a bilateral so I can't totally relate. I agree the fit of the bra is very important. I also found if the band is comfortable and I wear very light weight foam forms my bra tends to ride up. I also have found depending on the bra the band size will vary to be comfortable. I was a DDD before surgery and if I don't feel some weight it feels unusual and bothersome. The lightest and one of the most comfortable forms I like is the Jodee 51. To give me the weight I was use to and the bounce I like I have forms that weigh 2lbs each. I wear both bras with and without pockets and agree many bras with pockets leave a lot to be desired.

Well as many of you know I wear my knitted form.. filled by me to the right size and weighted with inspirationsal stones to just the roght weight.. this
I wear in a regular bra.. or stay stitched right into my dressy cami... its airy and washable, refillable and shapes nicely... just my thought on alternatives..I know some of the bras have room for side pads, these help with the bra cutting into your sides.. I used these when I had my prothesis.. it relieved the pain ..
good luck..

do any of you have problems with LE? I am in a compression bra- very comfortable and have not yet ordered prosthetics- just wear the TLC very light weight foam forms ( on top of my compression bra) and have heard discussion about weighted forms possibly causing more LE problems. Since mine currently is under VERY good control I do not want to stir it up!
-
I'm trying to find weighted forms so they don't ride up. My current bra starts the day in the right place but unless I tug at it all day, my breasts look like they're several inches higher than they should be.
I read somewhere that a woman was so disgusted with her forms that she made her own forms with millet because they stayed weighted down. has anybody heard of that?
-
molly4, what type of breast forms are you wearing. I have silicone forms and they are heavy enough to keep my bra from riding up.

They are foam-filled. I didn't realize the silicone were hearvier. I'm new it this
. Where did you get your silicones? I have an RX for an insurance covered fitting from my surgeon but I just don't want to do that.
Can you buy silicones over the internet?
thanx!
-
molly4, yes you can buy them over the internet. From your post I assume you are a bilateral?

Franie, yes I'm bilat. Are there a couple of sites you'd suggest? What price range should I investigate?
In my quick search I see some forms are for women seeking enhancement rather than replacement. The surgeon took some muscle so I'm practically concave. I didn't know you could be this flat.
thanx!

Molly, I am very flat, like a pancake I guess, but not concave. My problem was most forms are very light and I was use to more weight and bounce with my DDD breasts, and my bra wanted to ride up with light forms. Are you concave on both sides? I know forms are made with a pad on the back to fill a void left from a radical mast. I bought my last forms from Nancy at breastformshopping.com. I believe I paid between $400 and $500 for the pair. They are very heavy and that is what I wanted. I know you can spend more and less. You can google breast prothesis and see a variety of options. If you want to email me let know and I will give you my email address.

Hi Molly,
I understand you not wanting to go for a fitting, but if you could go to a place that sells breast forms, you could at least look over some of the options. And they would probably let you try some on yourself without an actual fitting. The weighted or silicone forms vary greatly in weight, shape, backing, what's actually inside, etc and sizes can vary from one manufacturer to another. If you buy from a store, your insurance may cover the cost. If you buy from the internet, make sure you can return or exchange.
PS I also wear foam forms and sometimes struggle with 'ride up', but find that, a camisole (love the Still You Tank cami) stays in place better than a bra.

A bit late on responding to the sports bra issue. I wear a sports bra every day (not all day but I dance or do yoga in one every day). I absolutely love the Janac sports bra. It's a mastectomy sports bra so it has pockets for forms. No moving around of forms in a shelf bra. I bought five of them. Regarding the smoosh factor, I wear a slightly smaller form in my sports bra. It just happens that the first form I bought is a size too small. I wear a contact form with a regular bra for normal use. Beside the Janac sports bra, I never wear mastectomy bras.
Yesterday I was changing for dance class and didn't realize until later that I had dropped my contact form on the floor in the bathroom stall. The bathroom was very crowded and everyone could see it lying there so it was a bit embarrasing when I had to ask the person in the stall to "please hand me my prosthesis". Most people have never seen a breast prosthesis before so they were probably wondering what it was!
