Spring-yaaaay on the drains and compression garments removal!!! So happy for you. Take it easy while you heal...and hope that is speedy! I know you are raring to go...
I made it to the gym today which felt great! I really needed a yoga class (back is tweaky) but didn't get it together in time in the morning for the class I like.
We are away this weekend so Happy New Year to all!!!!!
Hugs--Allie

My New Years resolution. Take the stairs more and park further from the door more. I've gotten into a bad habit at work of parking close and always using the elevator. My neuropathy made my feet hurt so much and my balance was so bad walking was hard and stair climbing out. However, they've improved enough that I should start doing more. Elevator started becoming habit. Little steps, maybe not when I'm loaded down with purse, briefcase, laptop etc at the beginning and end of the day, but during the day I need to get my rear end on those stairs and off of the elevator.

Happy New Year Sisters!

Happy New Year indeed!!
Good thing for the 10 min treadmill I did yesterday cause that's all I managed! And I've been eating the sugar cookies I made STILL!! I swear, they are my weakness, cause they are my MIL's recipe and only made once a year, but seriously, step away from the cookies already, piggy! haha
kmmd, when I worked in our Sacramento office (I transferred to our new Roseville office 3 yrs ago), I would take the back stairs to the 3rd floor and walk down a long hall to use the restroom, it was great! Now I am still on the 1st floor of a 3 floor building, but I don't do that in the new office. Maybe because it was a brand new building when we moved in and they were still building out the 2nd and 3rd floors and now I've gotten in the habit of using the 1st floor restroom. I have been thinking about starting that stair restroom routine again! So your neuropathy and balance have improved? My balance is still tweaky (as Allie says
.
Harley, we have a 'club' that sounds like your amenity center, with outdoor pools and elipticals, treadmills, bike, weights, but I haven't gone there either since the weather has turned cold! I am such a cold weather wimp! Whatever you decide, keep coming here and you will find that you will want to exercise because you are now accountable to us! heehee
Deanna, Cuddle Duds huh? I HAVE GOT TO look those up!!
Spring, so so so happy that you are making such good progress!! Happy yoga, cow and cat stretches! hmmm not really sure what a cow pose looks like?! ha I have my own version lately, standing over the cookies and grazing! yikes!
Joy, you have been such an inspiration with your work schedule and managing to walk your Dd and getting the exercise in!! Way to go!
We have guests coming for the night so I better get busy, have a wonderful New Year's Eve and Happy New Year all you cuties!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.
Deanna,
Thanks for the advice Re: layering. Gotta get some of those Cuddle Duds!!
Love the name!
One day, after Christmas, I went out and ran in the neighborhood, wearing THREE sweatshirts, and the top layer was my dh's sweatshirt!!
But, it worked! I wasn't cold at all, but I also wore earmuffs and gloves, too! I am such a cold weather wimp! Also, I got an iPod for Christmas, and somehow, just having some tunes helps to keep me focused, and keeps me going, when I start to feel like I'm gonna vapor lock!
Joy:
yes, this coast is very windy!! When we were thinking about moving here, I never imagined it would get so darn windy!!!
I think that if it's too windy, or cloudy, or rainy, I may force myself to do the elliptical... it's right there, in my house...
Spring,
Glad you are out of those compression garments!! YAY!
Kari,
Yep, we have an outdoor pool, and two treadmills and an elliptical, and weight training machines. I don't know what other implements of torture they have there, because I am limiting myself to the treadmill whenever I can get over there.
You are right. It helps to have a 'support' group; I know I have to be accountable to all you gals, so when I slip, you'll get me back on track!! The iPod has helped me to go out in the cold to get some exercise.
Happy New Year to all!!!

LOL, Kari! I purposely didn't make sugar cookies this year, 'cause I'm like you -- can't stop grazing on them and am deluded enough to believe that if you break off and eat multiple small pieces, you aren't consuming nearly as many calories or as much sugar & white flour as if you'd eaten a whole cookie without breaking it up. Same for fudge and an absolutely sinful toffee a friend of mine makes every year. But then yesterday someone sent us a box of Godiva chocolates, which don't lend themselves to breaking into pieces. So I did have one of those last night, but now I think I'm ready to get back to eating to fuel my body, build vibrant health and keep bc away forever... Deanna
P.S. http://www.cuddlduds.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=47 Might also be available on eBay, but this is what they look like and there's a list of stores that carry them, like Nordstrom, I believe.

Kari, the numbness isn't any better that I can tell, but, the acupuncture is helping with the burning pain, and yoga and time to learn how to compensate has meant I'm much more steady on my feet

Thanks for the link!! I have looked thru, and will probably check it out later, when I have more time.

Just got back from my Christmas trip to San Francisco. My older daughter couldn't get home for the holiday, so home went to her with husband, younger daughter and me all flying out to be with her. Now I am home and want to wish my sisters on this thread a new year of health, happiness, and serenity.
Many hugs
Mandy

Mandy,
glad you got home safe!!
Happy New Year to you!!

Happy New Year everyone!!
Sorry I didn't say that yesterday, was a bit pre-occupied. My new year started out with having to go pickup my DS from the party he was at early. He was praying to the porcelain gods. This is his first drunk (he'll be 18 in April)Was disappointed as he has been showing signs of responsible drinking, also saw the pictures on his camera, will have DH have another chat with him. Anyway, being the compassionate parent I am, made sure DS shovelled the sidewalk, cleaned the basement and invited his least favorite "uncle" for dinner for the appropriate ribbing. I know, I know, we all did it, but in all honesty, my parents never saw me praying to the porcelain gods.
Deanna, how is your boy doing? Trade kids? (just kidding, DS is a good kid, just testing the waters) About those cuddleduds, are the legs long? My inseam is about 33" and hate when those things shrink and go just below the knee.
Well need to start the exercise DVD's again today. My joints are extremely stiff again, blame that on my ooph and eatig too much sugar. I am with Deanna, didn't bake this year, well made banana bread and rice crispies, otherwise I just eat it all.
Harley, glad you joined us. Mandy glad your home safe and sound, hope you enjoyed your time with your girls. Kari, I think you are right, the less we do, our aches and pains seem worse than if we push through the exercise, I really need to get back to it before Kmmd comes down and gives me a kick in the butt (although I deserve it as I didn't take her advice and try to get in 10 min a day, thought about it for 10 min, does that count?) Meg good to see you back, how are things going? Spring how are things with you? Joy, day off yet? Allie how are you? Who did I miss? our group is getting so big, I can't remember if I got everyone. Mum where are you?
Have a great weekend everyone!
-
always my issue, is the motivation and the cold too, lol. Maybe with this thread it will help, thanks guys for posting this.
-
pk, yesterday was one of those days where I thought about it more then did it. Had to take my own 10 min advice. I'll try to do better today.
You had me on the floor talking about the compassionate person you are to DS. We may have the same sense of humor. I think part of the reason our parents never saw us with the porcelin gods is because we drill it into these kids to call us (or at least we did with our DS). One of the saddest things I've seen is a mother taking her kid off of life support because he was afraid to call for a ride after drinking when he wasn't supposed to at a party and he took a ride home with another kid who was over the limit. They hit a telephone pole before making it home. Be mad at him, he deserves it, you don't want him taking it lightly and doing it again. Forgive the preaching, but please somewhere along the way tell him how proud you are that he made a hard phone call and got you to come get him. It has been over a decade and I can still hear that mother crying.

Welcome, Sandy! I hope we can motivate each other! Just knowing others here struggle with motivation and figure out ways to overcome their personal obstacles, whether it's weather or tx-related, has been really inspiring and helped keep me more committed for the past 10 months than I ever would have been without this thread.
Penny, that boy of yours is really giving you a run for your money!! Hopefully he was sick enough this time to never want to do it again. And kmmd, that story is heartbreaking. Just hearing it now, I know it will stick with me. When my DS was in HS some group (not sure if it was the CHP or a nonprofit) did very realistic fatal traffic accident re-enactments with funerals and grieving parents, and these seemed to make more of a lasting impression on the kids than anything parents could tell them.
Penny, I don't know the answer to how long Cuddleduds bottoms are because all I ever use these days are tops. But they're silk, and they don't shrink like older, cotton long undewear did. Their website probably has an email address if you want to ask about length.
I hope everyone's New Year is off to a great start. I walked 4 miles yesterday and today, but our weather has been so glorious, I feel like I could do a second walk today.
Happy, healthy New Year everyone! Deanna
-
First walk today WITHOUT the compression garment, and it was a quick pace, I think about the same time as before surgery, but boy, was I huffing and puffing!!!! That's okay, I know it will get better!
It is FREEZING HERE!! It was below 30 at 4PM!!! You should see what we wear to walk, we look like "Nanook of the North!" Blondie, we got really really heavy winter coats from lands end. Mine is a "Chalet" coat and goes down to my calves! Goose Down! With hood!
Kari, I have been "grazing" myself! akkkkkkkk!!! We need to get back on the straight and narrow!
Spring.
-
Penny - glad to see someone else has a long in seam. Mine is 34-35.
It was 29 here this morning and wind chill was 19. The wind picked up this afternoon and it got nasty freezing cold. I will have to run my water tonight so my pipes don't freeze. Dd's walk was brisk and I mean that we walked very fast. Today was not the day to stop and smell the trees!
Good news!!! I have Tues and Wed off and plan on going to see my DS. (Now we know why the weather is turning sucky.) I'll keep you posted.
Two more work days. I worked 6 days last week. If I got holiday pay I might not mind so much. Boys will be boys. My was a good kid till he turned 18. After spending 2 weeks in jail for speeding tickets he came out a changed person and hasn't been in trouble since. Longest two weeks of my life! Have a great Sunday!
-
Sorry for the troubles some of you are having with your teens... times like this make me feel that maybe it's not too bad that I could never have children...
Spring,
YAY!, on the 1st walk without the compression garments!!
It is WAY too cold here to go outside walking, and I didn't even want to go to the amenity center, so I broke down and did 1/2 hour on the elliptical machine!! UGH!! I was huffing and puffing, and my legs were really feeling it... they will probably be sore tomorrow too.
Maybe I'll try to start yoga again, so I'll add that to the mix.
Thanks for the support.

First off, Deanna, I LOVE your new avatar!!! You look HOT!!
I had a FUN 4 days off of work. We had company for New Year's Eve and then decided on an impromptu trip into wine country, lots of beautiful scenery and some wonderful moments with family. Some asking me if I'm in the clear now, why can I only have one glass of wine, why no wine....lots of questions! But that's ok, because its ALL about me! haha...just kidding. I managed to get up New Year's morning and was more aggressive on the treadmill than I have been since pre bc and I felt GREAT all day, and you know what? no problems this whole weekend with my back/hip...I sure hope that's a sign of good times ahead!! We'll see, now that I'm sitting back in this work chair all day again...
Everyone sounds like they are doing well and are committed to staying motivated and exercising this year! WE ARE DOING IT!! yay!!
-
Couple of wimpy days last week, but overall got through pretty good. Snuck a few minutes in on the treadmill when breakfast was cooking this morning. I'll add in some pilates and weight lifting and yoga later I think. Its a day when doing 20 min of a lot of different things rather then a lot of one thing sounds like the most fun.
-
Kari, I wonder if your back/hip problem might be from your work chair, or at least aggrevated by it???? Have you ever looked into switching it? Deanna
-
ROAD TRIP - FINALLY!!! Leaving on Tuesday to visit my DS. It will be a cold ferry ride but I'm finally getting to go. I'm just spending one night. My Dd is going too so that might be interesting.
Walked on the treadmill for 30 minutes and did 50 sit ups, plus walked the Dd twice today. And it is coooold!!!
-
kmmd,
I'm with you... I did 20 minutes on that elliptical torture machine today, and I'm hoping to go out for a walk or run tomorrow, even though the high is only going to be in the low 40's, and that is what it was today...
sobx,
Have a great time visiting with your DS...
Today is my 24th wedding anniversary!Harley
-
Congrats Harley.
sobx, have fun with DS. That sounds like a heck of a work out day
I've gotten too used to the abbreviations we use here, I find myself using them in emails and having people email back what the heck was that
-
Harley: have a great anniversary.
Sobx: Hope you have a good visit with DS. Let us know how the trip goes.
It is so cold here that my morning walk is on hold for a while. I have a 3 story house and will just walk up and down the stairs for 20 minutes straight tomorrow. I am not as dilligent as some of you gals.
-
Thanks everyone for the warm wishes on my Anniversary.
Mandy
Any exercise you get is good... 20 minutes walking up and down the stairs is as good as the treadmill or even that torture machine, the elliptical that I've been using, since I just can't bring myself to go out into the frigid ARCTIC temps....
-
Mandy, Harley is right, walking up and down stairs for 20 min is very good exercise
-
Harley sorry I missed your anniversary, hope it was a good one.
Deanna- wow!! By the way, how is the boy?
Kmmd- you may have to come here and kick my butt, just can't seem to get back into it. Motivation now, may go back to Hawaii spring break, gotta get some of this weight off!
Joy, I so hope you have an amazing road trip and visit with DS.
Kari-impromtu trip to Hawaii on spring break? We could meet up.
Mandy, can you do some stairs for me too?
Spring, where are you, are you out walking and yogaing up a storm? You go girl!
Back to work today, have a great one everybody.
-
pk, tell yourself just 5 min today and tomorrow. Then try 10. See if you can ease yourself into makeing it a habit again. I had DH leave out an old picture of me at a weight I really really want to see again. I'm hoping that motivates me this week.
-
pk0199, Mandy, and all
Thanks for the Happy Anniversary wishes!
The anniversary was nice, but we celebrated on New Years Eve, because our favorite restaurant is closed for the month of January... so it was kinda quiet last night... we just watched a movie on Netflix.
I have lots of errands that I didn't do yesterday, so I don't know if I'll make it out for a walk... maybe I'll have to head to the amenity center and do the treadmill or else... the dreaded elliptical machine awaits!! Mandy, I don't have any steps in my house, so I can't do the stair torture exercise!!
Have a great day, all!!
Harley
