Zometa
Is anyone taking Zometa? How often? Is it administered through IV? Who prescribes it, your onc or your internist? Any SE's?

I am starting Zometa is two weeks for bone mets, so will be getting it every three weeks. I know women who are taking it as a preventative twice a year, but they are ER+/PR+. It is administered by their onc through an IV. The side effects (if you get them) seem to be mostly flu-like -- aches, pain, slight fever.

I am in a clinical trial, S0307, Phase III Trial of Bisphosphonates as Adjuvant Therapy for Primary Breast Cancer. Zometa is one of the arms of the trial and administered through an IV. I've heard that if you have any side effects from the Zometa it is more flu like. I entered the trial but was assigned to the Clodronate arm. It's a pill that I take daily for 3 years.

I am getting with chemo starting in a few weeks. I will have for 3 years as preventitive for bone mets. Several great studies out about it-and one study shows doing it WITH chemo can hlep effectiveness of chemo. Great drug showing great promise.

I will be participating in the study in the next couple of weeks. Not sure which arm I will be on Zometa on IV or the oral. I hope the oral.

Anita,
I've been on the arm with the oral pill, clodronate, for about 2 months now.

Donna have you had any SEs from the oral? Do you think it is better than the Zometa via IV? Thanks.

Were you dx with mets at the beginning? How did they find it? Did you have positive nodes?
-
Scoobydoo - Did you start the trial during or after chemo/radiation? My onc said I am having too many se from taxol to start it right now. How often do you take it?

Newalex -- I was dx'd Stage 2a (no node involvement) two years ago and was Her2+ at that point. Did six rounds of taxotere and carboplatin with Herceptin and then continued on Herceptin for the remainder of a year. Found bone mets this past November when I complained of groin pain and had an MRI. Turned out I had a fractured pelvis which appeared to be caused by mets weakening the bone. Had a biopsy which indicated that my Her2 status had changed and I'm now TN. Completed radiation in December to kill off the cancer cells so the bone could start healing and am starting chemo (Gemzar/Cisplatin/Zometa) next week.

I am doing the clinical trial, S0307, Phase III Trial of Bisphosphonates as Adjuvant Therapy for Primary Breast Cancer, the zometa arm of the trial. My first infusion will be on Tuesday. I will let you know how it goes.
