edited June 2014 in Stage I Breast Cancer

My mom had her lumpectomy a week ago Tuesday and had no discomfort after surgery - just bruising.

We got a call from the surgeon today - Stage 1, invasive ductal carcinoma - clean lymph nodes and clean margins in the tissue.

My mom will start a low-dose radiation treatment after the New Year.

When we found out two weeks ago that my mom had breast cancer, it was the worst day of my entire life. I just want other people to know that early detection is a gift and the past two weeks went by SO fast. Hard to believe that my mom is now cancer free.

To anyone else going through this: it goes by very quickly. The emotional part is far worse than the physical but you will get through it! You will be a survivor - just like my mom!!

Thank you to everyone who has talked me through the past two weeks. It was a roller coaster, and we finally got off the ride!

    Thank you!

My mom went to the oncologist and they are running a test to see how quickly her tumor cells replicate. She has a 92% chance of no reoccurance with rads and 94% with chemo - so the oncologist told her that he is 99% sure she won't need chemo, and even if it was suggested, she can refuse it since it only decreases her chances by 2%.

They are also giving her an injection to stop her periods and speed up her menopause. She is 54.

     Thoughts here?
