Is it likely to have heart damage with AC
I am doing neo-adjuvent AC Dose Dense... I had a MUGA yesterday and the girl had to repeat one of the "shots" because it was not right... of course she could not tell me what she meant!!! Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had experience with AC and not being able to continue because of heart issues or how often that happens. It is working after Taxotere failed miserably!! So I am stressed that I don't want to stop it.
Thanks... ~Jess

I had a Muga scan b4 i ever started chemo, and they found that my left ventrical wasn't pumping as good as it should have been,so they dropped one of the 3 drugs i was supposed to get,so i only has taxotere and cytoxan,They said the adriamycin can cause heart damage.
They di another muga after i finished chemo and everything is ok.
Good luck to ya

I had a baseline MUGA and this one is after 2 treatments so I am just waiting and wondering... I WISH they would call right after they have the results!!! yeesh...

Very few women have any problems with adriamycin. I can't remember what I have read, but the percentage is extremely low. Good luck.

Thank you... I looked it up and am seeing 1 in 10... I should have done that before I posted but it feels better to get real people re-assuring me

Jesshasit:
I had 4 doses of AC and 1 year of herceptin and had no heart problems.
Best wishes.

I had 4 doses of AC, 2 weeks apart, 12 taxol and herceptin - once a week for 12 weeks, then a year of herceptiin. MUGA scans showed very little change in my heart function and I am a smoker, age 62-3 at time of treatment.
You may have moved during one part of the scan and the reason for another "shot" needed.

I think that significant heart problems from AC are much lower than one in 10. In the BCIRG 006 study, out of 1050 who got AC-T chemo, 7 had grade 3 or 4 cardiac heart function problems. 11 had a 10% decrease in LVEF - that's about 1 in 100.

I think you are fine, if you had heart damage it wouldn't show up right away. When I was freaking out to my oncologist about AC and possible heart damage, he said that with 'just' four rounds (which is what I had), you are at almost no risk; it's if you have to do it long term that the problems come in. It's a miracle that we all don't have heart attacks and die before we even complete the cancer treatments because it is so d*#m stressful! Hang in there!
