I found the report in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.   The researchers used 5 micoMole and 10 MicroMole solutions of curcumin and piperacin on breast cancer and breast tissue cells in the lab. Here is the conclusion portion of the report:

"If systemic bioavailability of curcumin can be improved to allow bioactive concentrations of curcumin and piperine in vivo, then this combination may serve as an effective cancer preventive intervention to limit stem cell selfrenewal, since these cells and dysregulation of self-renewal pathways may be involved in carcinogenesis. Strategies aimed at reducing stem cell number and inhibiting their self-renewal could be an effective approach in cancer prevention. If this is the case, then assays such as mammosphere formation and ALDH expression may serve as biomarkers for cancer prevention studies in clinical trials. Curcumin, even at large doses, has been demonstrated to be non-toxic in clinical trials. Piperine has been shown in a small, phase I clinical trial to enhance the systemic bioavailability of curcumin [25]. However, a more systematic phase I trial with pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and toxicity endpoints of repeated dosing of these agents in combination is still needed. If proven safe and efficacious, dietary polyphenols could be an acceptable non-toxic longterm cancer risk reduction strategy."

How about a salad dressing with olive oil, tumeric, black pepper and ginger and some balsamic to round it out? Pour it all over the broccoli sprouts in the salad.

Somanywomen - So funny! Thanks for the tip!

I sometimes add it to a salad dressing as well. Fresh garlic, lemon, olive oil, balsamic, some turmeric and salt and pepper to taste - yum!

Ok, let me get this straight. Take curcumin with oil and it does not matter if taken with other supplements. I read this on breastcancerchoices: FYI

Breast cancer patients may consider taking 390 mg of CoQ10, which was
used in the Folkers and Lockwood studies on breast cancer patients.
Since CoQ10 is fat-soluble, taking the nutrient with an oil on an empty
stomach is recommended in order to maximize absorption.

    Soooo much to remember Yell

Peace, Love and a very Merry Christmas!!!!

    Hello and Merry Christmas!

Interesting thread, thank you all for the great info.  I have been taking curcumin (tumeric) by New Chapters, 400mg daily for several months. I checked Consumer Lab info and it's been rated 'approved' but reading this thread makes me wonder if I'm taking enough curcumin daily.

Can I just double the amount I'm taking in the New Chapters brand or should I take an 800 mg daily of another brand such as the ones mentioned above?

Also, what is the importance of rhizome versus the root of the tumeric plant? Is one better than the other?  New Chapters uses the rhizome and has extra virgin olive oil in the gel tablet, but no pepper. Questions, questions!

I can find very little on this subject.  In the testtube, it appears to inhibit cyp2d6, one of the enzyme pathways that converts tamoxifen to endoxifen, and which has been linked to recurrance of ER+ BC in women being treated with tamoxifen.  However, I can find no study that examines curcumin inhibiting cyp2d6 within the human body.  That is as yet unknown, from my findings.  Maybe someone else has more recent information.  The questionable part is how much curcumin actually is absorbed into the bloodstream and present in the liver to actually do in the liver what it does in the testtube.

    Hi All,

Where can someone puchase curcumin (tumeric)?  Is it in the spice section of a grocery store or does a health food store such as GNC carry tumeric?

Timothy -- Thanks for info.  I spent time on the internet a couple of days ago reading various articles/lab studies and what I gleaned is that Curcumin when combined w/Tamoxifen did not do as well as Tamox alone.  However, Curcumin can help the cells from becoming Tamox. resistant. But, the question is, when do you know that is happening?  Unil I know more, I'm skipping the Curcumin until I'm off Tamox, then will follow up w/curcumin.   I did find an article about a study on Flaxseed oil and Tamox -- the two did better together than alone.  We have Krill oil here but I may get the Flaxseed oil.  Karenanne

Karenanne, its so difficult to make any firm conclusion on some of these supplements, based on the limited information available.  At the very least, if there is evidence in that regard, you need to embark on these therapies at least with the awareness that possible adverse interactions may exist, and we need to talk about these matters.

Jean09, you should be able to find it in either (as a spice, turmeric, in the grocery store, or in capsule form at a health food store), though I prefer to cook with it rather than take it in pill form.

In Canada you can buy a very large bag of it at Supestore for around $4.00.  You can buy gelatin capsules and cap them yourself.  Health food stores or mail order will have the capsules if you want to go that route.  It makes you hands yellow, but you can fill them yourself, even without any fancy tools.

Thank you CrunchyPM and Timothy.  I'm going to the grocery store today and will look for it in the spice aisle.  How much is a recommended daily dose?  A teaspoonful a day?

    Dear Jean09,

I buy my Turmeric at a health food store. It is the organic ground Turmeric root. All you need is 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon, mixed with a little olive oil and also black pepper. The pepper increases the body's ability to absorb the Turmeric by 2000 %. Just put this on food at one of your meals. Unless the capsules have the peperine and oil, it is not as potent. I'm with Crunchy..get the benefits from foods, and it is also much less expensive. One bottle lasted me about 6 months, and it was a little over $4.00. Also you don't want to add the Turmeric while cooking at high heat, as then it's properties are destroyed.

If you haven't read the book Anticancer a New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, I would recommend buying it.

    Hi Nan,

Yes I have read Anti-Cancer by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber.  I loved the book.  I went grocery shopping today and bought alot of the foods/herbs he discussed in his book AND I found Tumeric in the spice aisle!!  Thank you for your directions on how to take, I didnt know cooking it at high heat destoys its properties.  Thanks for the information.

I also bought the agave nectar he referred to in his book.  I havent tried it yet but I hope its really sweet.  I have a sweet tooth and hope agave nectar will help with my sweet binges!!

    Dear Jean09,

I bake special things for my daughter Lori,(dx with TNBC),  and I use the Agave. You can buy it at Walmart also. I made her brownies with black beans...yes black beans as one of the ingredients, and they were delicious. I made her Baklava with the Agave also, and a special carrot cake for her birthday. She eliminated all sugar from her diet.Just use less of the Agave than you would of sugar. It is very sweet. Also, use Grapeseed oil in place of all vegetable oils for baking, and you use 1/2 of what the recipe calls for. Grease pans with the grape seed oil spray , and use only spelt flour.

Just add the Turmeric after cooking your meals.

    Nan,

I use extra virgin olive oil, I've never heard of grapeseed oil.  Does WalMart sell grapeseed oil?  I'd like to try that as well.  Thanks for the tip on using less agave than actual sugar.  I've made note for when I start baking.

Your a gem, thank you for all the information.  I'll say a prayer for your daughter Lori.  She's lucky to have you as a mon :)

    Jean09,

I also use olive oil, but not for baking, and definitely not for frying at high temperatures. I purchased the grapeseed oil at our Weis markets here in Altoona,PA, but I believe the spray came from Walmart. Thank you for the kind words and prayers for Lori...but we are the lucky ones to have Lori and her 4 sisters!Smile

Don't forget to use only half of what the recipe calls for when using grapeseed oil also, and please get the spelt flour also. It has a nutty flavor and is so much better for you. You won't ever use any other flour once you try it.

    Hi,

Thanks for your information. But we have to be careful, Like any supplementation curcumin can incresse or decrease the efficiency of chemotherapies.

Curcumonin also have interaction with some medcations and can even decrease the efficiency of certain chemotherapies (especially for breast cancer)

    Here is a link :

The best thing to do is to ask your doctor. He can give you advises regarding your kind of cancer and your kind of treatment. And make sure he get the information and not just say "it's ok". Some aoncolgist don't know everythink about spuuplementation. In case of doubt it's better not to take curcumin. It's se same for radiotherapy

A last thing. There are website where you can buy supplementations. Sometimes it is written that curcumin has no interactions. This is wrong. But good for the sales ;o)

    Have a nice year.

I am new to this site but was excited to see that people are talking about Curcumin mixed with bioperine. I started researching this subject back in Aug. when I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma very very small and node negative. I started to investigate  skin toxicity protection during radiation treatments. I found many different studies and I put the ones that made sense together and created a plan for myself. This is what I did. started 1 tsp turmeric, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 2 GNC's Womens Ultra Mega Capsules opened up, added to the dry mixture,  EVOO, and then used V8 juice to create a tonic, started this three weeks prior to starting radiation treatment 1x daily, increased to 2xs daily after starting radiation. I took a dose 30-40 minutes before radiation, did not shower before radiation, waited until after and never used soap on the treated breast to preserve natural body oil, used water only. After shower, I put GNC's 99% aloe gel on and let it dry before getting dressed. Again after work, I would take another tonic of Curcumin, ate dinner and based on another study out of Italy I drank one glass of Cabernet Suavignon, placed more aloe gel on, letting it air dry. I also requested the use of the IMRT and whole breast accelerated radiation treatment 16 fractions. I am small breasted but even with that in mind, the Drs are still amazed at the results. I looked the same at the end of treatment as I did when I began. The curcumin and pepper acted as a pain reliever and anti-flam and the red wine and natural body oil with aloe protected my skin. I did not even have any discoloration of the breast, still had my tan line from the summer. I did have some pain and pinching but had at least 6-7 hours of relief and knew when it was time to dose again with the curcumin. I then stopped taking all of this after treatment was completed and started the Tamoxefin, two weeks into taking this medication, I developed big hives that spanned accross my abdomine and inner thighs. It was not good, took two weeks to clear up after stopping the medication. I am Allergic to Sulfa drugs and the DR. had hoped that even though I am not able to take sulfa, I would not have a bad reaction to Tamoxefin...NOT... I was back looking for some alternative because I am only 40 and DR. said I have no other alternative to give you for prevention. I started my research again, I found the study out of UM. I then started the mixture back up and continue to take it 1x daily. I do not know if this system will work for others but wanted to share what I did that has amazed the Dr's in my little world. The Curcumin and pepper mix did not take all the pain away but I strongly believe it made it tolerable and only needed to take an over the county pain reliever a few times throughout treatment. I found another study that showed that Curcumin and Peperine  helped kill radiation resistant Cancer cells as well and inhanced the radiation while protecting the surrounding good tissue. I am 9 weeks out from the end of my treatment and doind very well. Thanks and it was nice to be able to tell someone.

I love turmeric as a seasoning.  But I just want to point out that turmeric and curcumin are not the same thing, exactly.

Turmeric is the spice made from the root, but curcumin is the active in turmeric, and which was the subject of all the studies.

It will probably turn out that turmeric has co factors that make it very effective, but for now, my understanding is that curcumin is the critical element.

    I love this thread....

I can't find my notes right now...but I read somewhere not to take more than I think it was 10 or 15 mg of piperine or either bioperine per day.  Bioperine is a brand of piperine.  My Life Extension Super Curcumin has bioperine in it, so I have been taking 2  800 mg capsules with 5 mg bioperine included in each for a total of 1600 mg curcumin and 10 mg bioperine and to that I add 2000 mg of the Jarrow curcumin that doesn't have piperine.  Maybe someone else knows if there is a limit of how much piperine a person should have per day.  I also have a little bottle of Bioperine and it doen't mention a limit...it just says take one every time you take supplements to help with bioavailability.

Any help with this out there?

MsBliss - I take the LEF Super Curcumin with Bioperine - 800 mg capsules. My doctor recommends taking 2 capsules twice per day. That is what I have been taking since last May. I feel it is an important part of my regime. So far, so good. I am having bloodwork done next week and expect to find out that things are stable and well (even though I am always a bit nervous about getting results!)
