painful lymphnodes

I had a mastectomy on my right side 2 years ago during which I only had 2 nodes removed with a sentinel node biopsy. Everything has been going along fine except for a heavy feeling that's been developing for months iin the right chest area with an occasional cough and inflamed feeling. And now, my right arm and neck nodes are painful as anything. I'm suddenly terrified and wondering whether waiting for a Dr.'s appointment is not proactive enough. WHen the nodes cause constant discomfort, is this a reason for real concern? I'm hoping someone comes up with some long latin medical term that has nothing to do with cancer...! Met. is so scary!

    Hi Monika,

    It may be simply due to an infection you're now aware of, especially in winter with so many virus's and bugs going around.

    I'd have it checked out though certainly if only to ease your mind as while it's probably nothing to do with your original dx we just can't take chances with this disease.

    Good luck and keep us posted, finger's crossed for only B9 news:)

    Have yourself checked for lymphedema as well.

    Those of us who had sentinel node biopsies are at high risk for truncal lymphedema.  Same thing as lymphedema in the arm, except that it's in the breast, upper chest (front and back).  The big problem is that most docs don't recognize truncal lymphedema, and the few that do often think there is no treatment.  There IS treatment, however, from specially trained LE (lymphedema) therapists. 

    Lymphedema fluid has probably been collecting the chest area, and may have now gotten infected.  The neighboring lymphnodes are doing the best they can to contain and manage the infection.  The lymph fluid backing up can cause coughing.  

    I can relate to the fear you are feeling.  I had sore and enlarged lymph nodes in my neck and arm and was terrified of a recurrence of the beast.  Turned out I had a sinus infection.  I'm betting that's what's going on with you, too.  Get it checked out and get peace of mind!

    I have minor truncal lymphedema and it is not recognized by a lot of doctors.

    I agree  - sounds like lymphedema - I've got a touch now.
