Help With Getting Back Into Own Housing

I am a Stage III Breast Cancer survivor.  I am writing to ask if anyone knows of any programs to help survivors get back into their own housing.  I sent messages today to ACS, Lance Armstrong, Wellness Community, CancerCare, Cancer Hope Network, ASCO, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, CancerNet, etc.

If I would have been able to work during treatment, I would have lost my Medicaid benefits.   It took 2 ½ years to get my Disability.  After my assets were depleted, I ended up having to move in with my mom, who is a very difficult woman to live with.  I am not from this area, and had been here only a few months when I was diagnosed.

In addition to other on-going problems, I suffer from severe, major clinical depression, anxiety and insomnia.  I lost 11 family members/close friends in 2003-2005.  I filed for divorce in 2005, and my former husband destroyed our credit in his anger.  I lost my third corporate job in five years in 2003, 9/11 related.

I am well-educated and very intelligent.  After I move, I want to get back into the work force part-time to start.  I will never be able to do what I used to do.  I would qualify for the Medicaid for the working poor program.  I will need some vocational rehabilitation, too.

I want to relocate to Maryland with my dog.  He has been fostered and/or boarded out for 13 months.  My dogs were always my rocks.  I had to give away my cats.

I have some money for the upfront costs of leasing an apartment, but not enough.  I need to be in a safe, quiet, area.  I do not need a complex with a gym, etc.

Following is some info I have been using in my search:

"Mature, professional, woman, relocating to area seeks immediate, quiet 1BR, studio, sublet, house on market or house sit.

Have older, sweet, happy dog (see photo) so need a yard.

Non-smoker, non-drinker, neat, quiet, no drama.
Under $800/month.  Prefer monthly or 3-6 month lease.  No broker's fees.
Prefer 1st floor in safe area within 1 - 1/2 hour of Baltimore or Washington."

Please let me know if you know of any programs or can recommend a place.

Thanks.

Nancy

    Hi Nancy,

I don't have ideas on your finding housing, but am in a somewhat similar situation in many ways. I just moved to Maryland and am living with my mom. Fortunately we get along great. I will be either re-entering the workforce, or trying to make a living at my artwork. I have dogs (a greyhound and five Italian greyhounds). I'm near Washington and Baltimore.

Although I can't help with housing, I'm willing to be an emotional support during this journey of yours, if I can. If you'd like, we could talk more via email about where I am and whether it might help you to have a friend in the area in which you're looking.

Whatever you do, and wherever you end up, I wish you all the luck in the world!
