hey all--

saw my oncologist today-- I JUST finished treatment, 5 months of chemo, double MX and 6 weeks of rads that ended friday. Started tamoxifen on halloween! My onc did NOT bring up zometa but I did--she hemmed and hawed and then said my bone density was very good which meant insurance wouldn't pay for it. She went on to say I should take it. Trying to decide if I should pay for it myself!

I was wondering about this, too.

Any idea how much it costs if insurance doesn't pay?

I'm on a similar schedule.  Did 6 rounds of chemo that ended mid-October, just finished rads on Monday and started Tamox about a month ago.  I'll be starting Zometa mid-January.  Not sure how much it's going to cost but insurance is on my list of people to call.  Fingers crossed for both of us!

    Hey--

I will start Zometa in the spring, just to give me a chance to heal from rads and chemo!

Hmmm I wonder why they aren't having me wait too? I was surprised when he said January but I figured I might as well get the first one over with anyway. I'm still procrastinating on calling insurance. I'm nervous for them to say no!

Before I found out my insurance would pay for it, my oncologist mentioned about $600 per infusion.

    Hi ladies,

Just curious, why ins would not cover it? If your dr recommends it, I am going for round 3 (I get the infusion every 6 months as part of my regimen) and I have not had any insurance issues. The issue can be the way the onc bills it, so ask if they can bill it in a different way.

As far as the treatments are concerned, there is not much to it, a lot different than cemo :) With this said, I remember the first treatment was the hardest, it made my body shake and ache for a few days after... but some ladies on here recommended I ask for more saline in the drip and for them to do it slower... so the next infusion I had I made the request and the side effects were so much less!

So, here is to you, hoping the insurance will cover this as it really has been linked to helping out woman in early stage bc as well as advanced stage.

I checked that today, it's $660 here in Ontario. Few insurance plans cover it.

Can you ask about the bisphosphonates trial?  There is a thread about it on here.  I do it but I am on the Ibandronate arm.  The other two arms are Zometa and Clodronate.

I am in Ontario and my husbands insurance (Great West Life) covers 90% of it.

The Drug store charges me $600, so my out of pocket is $60. Norvatis pays for a nurse to come to my house and infuse me.

I think it is money well spent!

Our drug store said it's 660, GWL (my wife's) would cover 75%, Desjardins (mine) will cover the remainder. The problem is that the onc wants Aredia for some reason (according to his secretary).

If your insurance does not cover it like mine (cost about $660 in Canada).  Try getting a hold of the company that makes it.  They reimburse half of it back to me.  They will have you fill out some forms and send it back to them.
