I can't sleep - so I get on the computer and there is so much to read on the Canadian site - what fun. Thanks, everyone.

    "Pease porridge hot, pease porridge cold;

Pease porridge in the pot, nine days old!"

Old English nursery rhyme -- haven't a clue what "pease" is -- wonder if it's slang for something, or maybe related to Jamie Oliver's favourite cooking expression "easy peasy"!   At any rate, it sure sounds better (though not by much!!!) than gruelUndecided!

Thanks for the laughs everyone~ and please, keep 'em coming!

I forget: is this the snow thread, or is that the other one?  I'm getting all confuzled.

Hoping that this IS the snow thread, here's my report from Brooklyn.  Went for a run this morning; was called, variously, "brave" (at least three times) and "intrepid" (I liked that one) by random passersby.  (I'm sure I was called "crazy," too, but not to my face.)  There was very little vehicular traffic, so pedestrians just took over the streets.  (Kind of like a summer street festival, but without the "mozzarepa" trucks.*)  Kids were loving it: sliding down snow-covered front steps, or clambering from snow drifts onto the tops of buried cars.  Parents were not loving it quite so much.

Add to the list of Canadian contributions to world civilization - cold weather running gear.  My Canadian-made running pants are the greatest.

*Thinking you may not have arepas, much less mozzarepas, in Canada, a few words of explanation.  "Arepas" are a kind of Colombian griddle cake, made out of cornmeal, found in immigrant neighborhoods.  "Mozzarepas" are arepas plus lots of gooey cheese, found (for some reason) at every street festival in every neighborhood in NYC.

Linasa, I think this rhyme is referring to porridge made from peas (yuck!).

Well, I wiki'ed it!  Turns out pease pudding and pease porridge were interchangeable and most likely either of them was made from split peas.  Of course the Brits call dessert "pudding" so I guess you really could have your "porridge" hot and your "pudding" cold.  Better hot than cold, I'm thinkin'.....!  But 9 days old?  Really??

Aren't you glad we got that all cleared upTongue out!

Linda, you make me think of a postman/woman -- "Neither rain nor hail nor sleet nor snow (up to my knees!) will keep me from my appointed run"!

All that porridge talk made me obsess all day about a hot cereal that I discovered after coming to Canada.  For a while I quite liked it and then I got bored.  I could not remember the name of it, finally with my husband's help it came to me - Red River.  Did anyone else like this stuff?  It's probably very good for you - multigrain and all that, maybe I should pick up another box.

I loved that stuff.  Love oatmeal too. The real kind that gets sticky.

I prefer my oatmeal and raisins in COOKIES!

The Olympic torch relay passed by my house yesterday on its way to Niagara Falls.  Most of it featured the Olympic sponsors advertising their wares!  But -- everyone loves a paradeWink!

Did you get one of the coke bottles, with the torch on it?

Nope -- guess I was on the wrong side of the street!   But that's okay, I've never been a coke drinker.  And I was too busy trying to figure out how to take photos with DH's fancy digital camera.  I did get a good one (of the torch exchange) though, and if I can figure out how to post it here, I will!

I got one of the coke bottles - it is artficially sweetened so I managed to convince grandson that it is a collectible and will be valuable one day when he is older. "Old as you are?" he asked. Cute kid.

I hope to take my kids on the 290th when the torch goes by here, but I've just realized that I also have rads that day. Hmmm. I'll be glad when this is over. Very sore now, and my incision line is oozing - sorry, was that TMI?

I officially am ticked off with this website. (Sorry to break the party mood)

    Here we are entering Christmas.

Since March, like many of you, I have had a mastectomy, chemo, radiation, Herceptin, femara and all that goes with that. Still, I have been quite optimistic that things will be fine, that with the full arsenal of treatments that my poor old body has withstood, chances of another recurrance are slim. Now the news on the sidebar of this site tells me that since I am well overweight, and can't lose with the drugs and fatigue  -  I have a really good chance of konking out sooner than everyone else. And they seem almost gleeful to put that report there. It now seems better to have had the stupid banner about with the moral panic about mammography guidelines.

I haven't cried during this whole thing - well, hardly ever - but this is making me darned close.

Those banners suck.  I complained about it on Stage IV board.  So did someone else.  We need encouraging words -- there was one about biphosphates working for us.  I'm gonna create a message to the moderators.

((((Lassie)))))  Do NOT worry about the party mood.  I hate to see you upset.  I agree with you about the banners.

Elizabeth, I will be there supporting you.

    _uck that weight _hit.

I did one of those internet BMI things and I am officially OBESE.  Hellooo.  If I lose a couple of pounds, I will be considered merely overweight.  Kiss my _ss.  I'm a size 16 now .. okay .. used to be slim and beautiful .. so now I'm round and lovely.

    Lassie, Hugs my Canadian friend.

Okay, I just read the "banner" article about fat people.

I wish I hadn't.  Who needs to feel any worse about their bodies than they already do.

I'm going to light a cigarette and grab a piece of chocolate.

    peace and hugs,

    Hi Madalyn,

I'm not taking an AI or Tamoxifen ... just plain old menopausal.  I'm very active and still can't drop the extra pounds since instant menopause when my treatment started.

I wonder if there are any numbers out there about thin vs. overweight people and breast cancer diagnosis.  I don't think "cancer" cares about your weight or anything else.

    hugs,

    Bren

Yeah, well I'm slim and I got it so there goes that theory out the window. I get ticked with all the medical news about lifestyle coz I lead a healthy lifestyle and I still got cancer twice (ovarian 7 years ago).

It's naive to think that if you eat broccoli and don't smoke and maintain a healthy weight you won't get cancer.  There are other factors.  I got it because of BRCA1.  It didn't matter what I did I still got it.  I was in the best shape of my life and I still got it.  The only benefit with being slim in the case of the ovarian was that the surgeon was able to see everything in my abdomen and be sure that he got it all.

I'll weigh in here too - HE HE,

I am also overweight, and find it extremely hard to loose weight. The obese word ticks me off. I am sure that I do not eat any more than my slim and trim friend - all  I see her eat is chocolate bars and other junk ..... I've been trying to work out, but now that the kids are off school and going to rads daily, my good headway seems to be lost. I know I'll get back into it after the new year, but what do I do when I go back to work full time? It really isn't fair.

I hate the banners too. Perhaps the mods could have started a new thread with this info, instead it stares us in the face.

It looks like the mods have listened. Now we know that chemo works - well I hope so, otherwise we've all been grossly mistreated. Sorry, I'm sort of grumpy. I've come down with a head cold and now it appears that my incision line has become infected somewhat due to rads, so onto the antibiotics again. I really want to feel better by christmas morning.

    Rinna,

I hope you are feeling better.  I am glad you are on antibiotics.  I hope they clear up the infection soon!

To all the wonderful people on this thread and board, I wish you all that you desire during this Holiday Season.  I hope that you get the love and support you want.  I wish for a cure for this horrible disease.  I wish that you have happy and healthier days ahead.

Rinna -- that sucks -- I hope the antibiotics for the incision work quickly.  I've picked up a head cold too -- been sleeping all day, hoping it will disappear.  Take care,

    Elizabeth
