10 years ago at Christmas....
...I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer. My kids were 12 and 9. Two years later my beloved father died and one year later, my husband had heart failure (huband currently doing fine). Today I'm 4 courses away from completing my doctorate which I began 2 years ago.
The decade started out horribly and is ending wonderfully. I feel dazed, drained, grateful, and humbled. Most of all, grateful. I don't know why I survived while wonderful bc women I met, died.
I wish all of of you a blessed peaceful holiday season and much strength as you endure this journey we're on.

Getting a doctorate! I'm 51 and my field of work has been computers which meant continual learning. Here I am thinking it's time to slow down and you are doing the opposite. Thank you for reminding me that after tx is done there is no reason for me not to go back and re-energize the passion.

Oh, I forget to ask, what was your diet, exercise and lifestyle for past 10 years? Please tell us in detail, it maybe be insignificant to you but it will be a great reference if you would share with us. Please, please, I will put sugar on top !.
-
Beautiful story, Gabrielle! Thank you for taking the time to post it. We get a lot of bad news here on the forums, but many of us suspect that there are a lot of great stories out there that we aren't hearing. You are an inspiration!

Thank you all for the good wishes. I remember how much survival stories meant to me when I was first dx. What a great feeling it is to now provide that hope to others.
My doctorate will be in Business Adminstration (DBA). I'm a CPA, work full time for the Federal government, teach college accounting part-time, and then also go to school myself. I find keeping busy keeps me plugged in and reduces cancer to the tiny little box in which it belongs. I'm 54 now and there is a 72-year old woman in my doctoral cohort -- now, *she's* an inspiration!
I eat lots of fruits, veggies and meat -- kind of a modified Atkins in that I eat a lot of fruit. But, I drink coffee, indulge in chocolate, and have the occasional drink -- so, nothing too extreme.
Feeling wistful for the real warriors I got to know over the past 10 years who, certainly through no fault of their own, weren't as fortunate as me. I feel like they are my guardian angels as I continue to slug it out here on earth.
Again, much strength and peace to all of you. I used to pray to God that if it weren't his plan to make me well, at least give me peace of mind. I swear He came through for me when I prayed that prayer to him. Hope it all works for you too.

Oh, Gabrielle, thanks so much for posting this. Today is the 1-year anniversary of my double-mastectomy. I'm doing extremely well after all of my treatments but every once in a while I get afraid that my upbeat outlook will come back to bite me in the butt. Seeing posts like yours gives me the strength to continue on this path.
Have a wonderful holiday!
