I have an appointment tomorrow with my plastic surgeon re my tram flap reconstruction. I don't know what I should do about this. I was just dx with small met to my breast bone and don't know if I should go ahead or not. I've waited 2 years to finally get this and tomorrow is my last consult. Is it like giving up if I don't? But what could be instore for me in the future with these mets? Anyone out there with the same dilemma or any thoughts anyone? Im thinking I probably shouldn't put myself through anything unnecessary either. Thoughts? I would appreciate any help.

    Dear Dawn,

    I'm so sorry that this has happened to you, especially at a time when you were looking forward to moving ahead and having reconstruction. I've read posts on these boards from women with mets who have still pursued reconstruction and from others who have decided not to go ahead.

    I particularly want to say that if you decide not to go ahead with tram flap surgery, it is NOT like giving up. Your situation has changed, emotionally as well as medically, with this new diagnosis, so it seems natural to me that you'd want to re-examine your priorities. You may want to focus on staying healthy and enjoying life right now, rather than going through a big surgery. On the other hand, as I understand it, women with bone mets often do extremely well, so if you feel having the recon will help you enjoy life more and feel better about yourself, you may want to go ahead.

    You've waited two years already. Perhaps a middle road would be to postpone a little longer until you've adjusted to your new reality and are sure what you want to do.

    I agree with Barbara.  I don't think you're giving up and wouldn't do anything major if you're unsure.  You can, always, do it later.  Pursuing reconstruction is a major commitment and you have to be emotionally prepared to see it through, especially if you are faced with complications.
