Hey I have a list of healthy products for those of us with Breast Cancer.http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNman000Here it is girls.

Breast Cancer Action - Paraben-Free Cosmetics

Parabens are chemical preservatives that have been identified as estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function. (Estrogenic chemicals mimic the function of the naturally occurring hormone estrogen, and exposure to external estrogens has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.)

Want to know if your products contains parabens? Here are some steps to take:

  1. Look on the label for the following ingredients: methylparaben, propylparaben, isoparaben, or butylparaben.
  2. Find out which company makes the product you use. See if they have an ingredient list available on the product itself, or on the company's web site. If a company is not forthcoming with the information you seek, you may want to purchase your products from another company.
  3. Try emailing or calling the company and asking them if your product contains parabens.
  4. If you represent a cosmetics company that is completely paraben-free, let us know. Here are some companies that have committed to being paraben-free. These companies do not use parabens for preservation, but instead use other procedures, packaging choices, and ingredients to achieve product stability.

KerryMac,  try to find a cleanser.  Soap ruins the ph balance and protective barrrier on your skin.

thisisme,  before bc I had not ideas about the paraban issue and breast cancer either.  I've always had good skin and good skincare practices, but my very favorite product that I used for years I learned had parabans in it.  Now I'm lost without it and still looking for something that compares to the results I got with it.

everyminute,  I've heard about Burts Bees.  Right now I am using "Emininence" cucumber undereye firmer and their mosture creme, but I hate it on my skin.  Too thick.  I went with it during Chemo because they have the pink ribbon hype and it's on the list above, and my daughter brought it home from the spa she works at.

Avon sponsors Breast Cancer walks and had reformulated a lot of their products.   I am not affiliated with Avon in any way, but offering their products to check if you are looking for safer cosmetics and creams.

And I am repeating this link:

My favorite shampoo contains parabens. Yikes. I've been using John Freida Brilliant Brunette. Anyone have a recommendation for a high-shine daily shampoo without parabens?

I use pure castile soap for bathing and for shampoo. It is available everywhere including Target and Trader Joe's. The only moisturizer I use now is organic coconut oil. It feels wonderful and is an antioxidant. I even use it on my lips, just do not use a lot of it before bed as it will rev your metabolism. I was worried at first that it would feel greasy and make me break out, but it doesn't at all. You can find it in the food sections of most grocery stores. Make sure it is not overprocessed an organic. It is a solid below 85 degrees and liquid when it is heated. It is also the most healthy cooking oil you can use. It does not go rancid and does not burn easily. The only other oil I use is cold pressed EVO for salads.

Great info - thanks!  I had switched moisturizers about a year ago when I read about a possible link with parabens and Alzheimer's (which used to be my greatest fear), but I didn't realize how many other products contained the stuff!  There goes my favorite leave-in conditioner.....not that I need it right now anyway......  :)

I found a really nice facial moisturizer yesterday at "Rite Aid" Kiss  It smells so nice and feels really light on the face and is great for sun aged skin.  Here's the website.Click here: Avalon Organics | Vitamin C

Hey everyone....I'm a reformed "product-junkie" who now reads every label...so much of the better stuff is pricey! BUT, I found that some of the St. Ives products are paraben free and pthalate free and work well for me. I use their olive oil facial cleanser (smells great!), one of their body washes and one of their moisturizers...each under $5. Thought I'd share...

I will look into St Ives, I have seen their products. Thanks!

It really annoys me that all those "natural" and "Botanical" products are full of parabens....The Body Shop is a prime example. Their products are ridden with parabens.

I believe most of the Bare Minerals line is paraben and phlate free, I think the Mineral Veil prodcut might have one or the other. I'll try and find where I got this info and post.

Thanks for the heads up on St. Ives. I like a lot of their stuff.

Alba Botanica has a nice cocoa butter hand and body lotion that's paraben-free - I just get it at my local natural foods store.  It's kind of expensive but I really like it. It looks like they also don't test on animals.

My goodness. I just checked the website for hazardous stuff and EVERYTHING I use is on the list as high hazard. The hair color I've been using forever, my moisturizer, shampoo, hair spray, perfume....what to do?????

I'm going to have to really research and read labels. I never thought it would come to this...

Interesting information.  Most of what I use is on the "hazard" list, I guess I'll have to start looking at labels and trying other products.

Ok, today was my 'paraben free' shopping day. I now have Burts Bees shampoo and conditioner and I have a bar of homemade olive oil/lemon soap which I love.

I also have Burts Bees ageless moisturizer (which I was already using).

Ok...now if I can only lose some weight :)

What about mineral oils??? Arbonne is the only product that I personally know of that covers it all.

Parabens and formaldehydes are traditionally used in cosmetics as preservatives. The alternative is no preservatives, which leaves the products open to bacteria. Which is worse? Usana has a complete line of skin care and cleansers that are paraben and formaldehyde free and they have a patent on their own preservative that is non carcinogenic. They tested it for 10 years before putting it on the market and several big companies have offered to buy the patent.

I have researched the topic of safer cosmetics a lot and found there is so much misinformation. It is really hard to know what is safe, so I try to use as little as possible. I love the Usana shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, and lotions, but I still use pure coconut oil a lot on my skin. I would never use any kind of mineral oil anymore. They come from the same sources as motor oil. We are not cars.

As for sources of information, Do not trust the envionmental working group. They are a political org. They do not test anything, they just pretend to in order to solicit donations.

Bea Kinnear's book, Your Skin and You gives a lot of great information. She did a lot of work to distinguish fact from myth.
