Most of what I cook in the microwave I don't care if it gets browned (veggies, frozen dinners, fish, etc.). The stuff I do want to lightly brown, I use a Nesco roaster or toaster oven. I had a convection toaster oven and LOVED it because it cooked so much more quickly, but the fan part died and now it's just a toaster oven. I'm gunshy about getting another 'cause it died too quickly and it does add some cost to the unit. I can do pretty much all my roasting and baking in the toaster oven and the roaster. I found it uses about 1/4 the electricity that the big oven does, and I'm one of those energy-conscious consumers.
So ... I don't know if that's any help, but it is my experience with them.

I have one it's 10+ years old and it replaced the previous combo that was 10+ years old. I must say that I rarely use the convection any more although I did at one time. That first thing that totally spoiled me with combination cooking; it made "roasting" faster (though not as fast as you first might think) and really did give enough browning to make food look appetizing. Also very juicy and tender. It was great to roast a browned, juicy chicken in about 2/3 the time. It is also more energy efficient. It was also nice to have a 'second oven' (to bake/roast at 2 different temps or when entertaining. Yeah, I really used to do that. I remember.)
That said, there are drawbacks. They are bigger an 'bulkier' than micro-only ovens, and yes, I doubt you could put one 'overhead.' But I've noticed a lot of kitchen designs lately that build the micro below the counter -- not so low that you're bending way down, but makes it easier for younger cooks or if your cook works from a wheelchair. (Only if you're looking for an excuse to say "Honey, let's re-think the cabinet space.)
The other thing that I should have realized at first, but didn't, was that they get hot like conventional ovens. Duh! Again this makes for 'constraints' with a build-in, and a different 'safety' issue with low access than you have with a micro-only. (Though it is no greater than a conventional oven. Just that it looks so much like a microwave that an unsuspecting person could get a surprise.)
Anyway, I haven't used the convection or combo function for years. Once the kids got into high school, I no longer attempted to put a nicely roasted chicken dinner on a weeknight table, so combo cooking doesn't add value. Now, DDs are in college and around less. Many nights I don't cook at all. And as you may have gathered, I haven't 'entertained' for years, so one oven is more than enough. But there was a time... Wishing you well.
Peace,
Beth

Thanks Beth & LJ13-2
After I researched the Convection oven more. I decided it definatly wasnt something we needed or would use. Dh came home from work & said 3 co workers had one & none of them used thiers either. I told Him It was already Vetoed Anyways : )
So we looked last night at Regular Microwaves. Found a Samsung at lowes we liked She said it could be ordered....We wanted to look at a few other stores. Did that & came back to order the Samsung. It was no Longer available for order! 1.5 hrs later the ever Popular (not) White was sold. LOL
We could order it online still through them ;o
We looked some more on line this morning & found another in a smaller size that really is just fine (still bigger & with more power then what we have now) & we can order it at the store...if we rush there now. LOL
I have a 10% coupon that I cant use on line...So I want to order it at the store.
it will cost about $200. Not bad compared to what we paid for the last 2.

Pam, my current one is a Samsung too. I've had it about 2 years. Very happy with it. It replaced a GE model that died twice (once within warranty, once out of warranty). I'm done with GE microwaves. This was my first Samsung appliance, and so far, so good. Got it at Best Buy.

I have a GE Microwave/Convection/Grill oven and absolutely love it! It's a stainless model that I purchased at Lowes - item #7605. I've only had it a short time, but I've made grilled cheese sandwiches, oven omeletes, muffins and layer cakes using the 2 level rack.

Hmmm, we got a microwave decades ago when they first came out: $700! Lots to be said for waiting. LOL.

I like Cuisinart, it is the best brand of microwaves.... However, there are many top brands like LG, Whirlpool, but they cost too much money. But with Cuisinart, you pay less and get good performance oven, it has also a wide varieties of ovens to choose from.

Oh Funny, I forgot I even started this thread.
I did just buy a used microwave/convection countertop oven to bake my Polymer clay in

We had an overhead convection/microware in our motorhome and when it died, we replaced it with the same one (Sharp from Sears). Each lasted about five years and then the convection operation would no longer work. I blamed it on the jiggling as we drove down the road. We replaced it with a microwave and then took out cabinets to set in an apartment sized propane stove/oven that I love.
