Anyone Still Having Pain After 1 Year
I had bilateral mast without reconstruction exactly one year ago and have had an excellent recovery. A couple of times a day, I have a slight pain in different areas. Is anyone else having this?

Yes, I'm just a year passed my bilat mx, and I still have some pain on the cancer side. Mostly, I can tell it's from pockets that have developed (mine was a skin-sparing mx because I plan to have recon eventually) and filled with fluid. When I massage them a bit, I get relief. I guess it's a kind of lymphadema in those spots.
But I also have a pain or two in my rib area. I attribute that to the radiation I received. I think its chondritis and really, the only treatments for that are ice, rest, and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs.
Where have you been having the pains? Do you have any adherences around your scars? They can pull and cause discomfort at the least, and pain at the worst.

Sorry to add after 3 years I am still unconfortable with bras and have to take tylenol everynight for trunck pain. But I don't want to worry you, appartently this is very rare and has something to do with nerve damage. I did not receive radiation so cannot attribute it to this.

Just feels great to know that I am not the only one. Thanks!

One year after bilat mx: No major pain but tightness, an occasional shooting pain, and more tightness. I have had a lot of PT and exercise almost every day which really helps to reduce the tight feeling. If I miss a day or more, I feel like I am hunching forward, the tightness pulling me into a curl. It takes some conscious moves to get out of that - after exercising I'm fine. None of this seems abnormal to any of my surgeons - I presume they see much worse. All in all I can't complain, as long as I keep moving I have adequate posture and range of motion and no real pain. It's just that life is never quite the same after mx.

I'm 11 months out from left mastectomy -- still seeing a PT for tightness (when i lift my arm straight up or stretch it behind me) but probably wouldn't bother any more if i didn't also have pelvic floor problems that the same PT works on.
I do get a weird muscle spasm occasionally - like a cramp, when i am bending forward and reaching across my chest with my left arm. My PT thinks it's a cramp in the left pec, but has no other explanation except maybe adhesions.

yep- one yr later after bi-lat, no recon and i have tightness and still some pains from time to time. I also have some adhesions where my inciions didn't heal well. It makes stretching very difficult on that side.
I still cannot scub my chest in the shower like i used to do..i still have to much sensitivity in the whole chest area. Kind of have to baby it to wash... C-sections were kind of like that too so I know that it will eventually get better just not sure how long it will take.

Yes, I'm almost three years out, and I still get an occasional very sore feeling, usually at night. Feels like a deep heavy bruise and scares the crap out of me. Then it goes away for a few weeks and I forget about it.

Been 11 months, and yep, I still have a fair bit of pain.
I had a failed recon and I think there's quite a bit of scar tissue left. It hurts and feels weird at the gym, and I also get shooting pains and pulling and aches. Oddly it's a great deal worse when I am sick.
I still can't face into the shower without covering my chest - it's just too sensitive. Is that normal??

It is so great getting others information on pain, etc. At first, I was totally numb from my bilat mast which was ok. Now after 1 yr getting more feeling back. Thanks again to everyone who answered.

I know this is an old post, but I"m new here and am just now not having significant pain under the arms (my incisions for a bilat went almost to the back of my armpits). surgery was 12/08. very difficult finding comfortable clothes in the winter because under the arm is of course where seams of clothing are. finally saw a second BS after original said, nerve damage, have to live with it; who said it would eventually end and in the meantime I could try accupuncture and/or pain mgmt doc. Saw an acc. for a consult - pricey; got busy and in the meantime, it's more tolerable now. No recon, and I think I wasn't treated as carefully during surgery as I might otherwise have been. Ditto the above comments re: nice to know I"m not alone. (lumpectomy with node removal 2/98; celebrated 10 years in july 09 and bam - routine mammo shows DCIS in orginal breast, so off they both came - BRAC negative, but first surgery was premenopausal, so not taking any chances)

I am almost a year out following a mast and immediate implant with Alloderm. I asked my Onc about the lingering occasional pain and he said it can last for 3 years. I thought the pain was due to the implant but evidentally it can be from the mast also. I'll be having another mast in January for a new IDC found on the other side. So, guess I am looking at about 4 years of occasional pain reminding me that my cancer has been removed!

Yep,.I still have pain also,.and a little sore spot around the area where my drains were. My bra will make me aware of it at times. It hasn't gotten any worse,.but,.it hasn't gotten better,.either. The tightness isn't as bad as used to be,.but,.if I lift my arm up,.it pulls like nobodys business! Is anyones skin sensitive from rads still?
