    Dear Yazmin,

My friend's son was dx with lung cancer 2 months ago, and is now taking chemo (Cisplatin and Taxotere),  and the onc told him that it was possible he would have permanent hair loss. They told my daughter the same thing in 2007 when she took chemo. They also told him that if he loses his nails, that they would not grow back! Did you ever feel that "they" never really provide you with all the side effects up front? You know....the absolute truth?

Many side effects from any chemo.

And you choose to single out permanent hair loss as evidence of bad side effects.

    Okkkkkkkk.

Dear Nan: My heart is breaking for your friend's son when you say: "They also told him that if he loses his nails, that they would not grow back!"

I was totally unaware of this particular side-effect, but to answer your question: yes, I do feel "they" never really provide you with all the side effects up front? You know....the absolute truth?

    This is very sad, indeed.

    Yazmin,

They also told him that he "may" suffer permanent hearing loss, and my daughter did have hearing loss...until she started taking BHRT, and it is slowly returning. The hairs in our noses and ears, and for that matter all over our body, are there for a reason, to provide a filter system. A woman on the TNBC site posted that a mosquito flew up her nose and a few minutes later she coughed it out. Yes she was on chemo, and lost all the hair on her body.

Hearing loss also? This is truly awful (no other way to put it).

My daughter's last chemo was the day after Thanksgiving of 2007. In May of this year she still had neuropathy in her hands and feet and blisters on the tops of her feet. The BHRT has taken all of these side effects away! As she says, she will never ever take chemo again, for if it didn't get the "C" the first time it will not get it the second time. The damage is already done. If we had known then what we know now, things would have been done differently.BTW..my friend whose son was dx with lung cancer, was also dx with TNBC in January, but chose only to have a double mastectomy, and nothing else. She is doing quite well!!

I am glad your friend is doing well and feeling comfortable with her treatment choice. This forum is living proof of how hard those choices are in the face of the medical disinformation that we face on a continuous basis from all directions.Yell
