Looking for safe, gentle, natural cleansing

I'm wondering if anyone knows of, and can recommend, a safe & gentle cleanse that does not involve enemas or anything else extreme and possibly dehydrating? I'm referring, specifically, to regimens that require one to take pills or drink mixes on a daily basis for a week or so and limit one's diet simultaneously. Although I have a fairly healthy diet, it does include some processed foods and I'm looking for a new beginning. It seems to me that cleansing my system would be a good way to start.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

What is it you are looking to cleanse?

Marin:  Within the last year, I've seen a veritable "explosion" of so-called cleansing products at my healthfood store.  Some companies are making a whole lot of money with their unfounded claims.

From all I've read, one's own body does a remarkable job of cleansing itself.  If you're exercising regularly (which I'm sure you do!) and you're eating properly, and if you're getting lots of fibre to push through the waste materials that your body doesn't need, then why would you need something else?

I did two cleanses last year.  I did a colon cleanse and liver/gall bladder cleanse.  I got the supplies from herbdoc.com.  The man who developed the line of products is a hard core vegan in a maniacal sort of way, but if you can manage to not be offput by his insistence on being vegan, you might find what you're looking for.  I started with the superfood 'vitality kit'.  I still have most of my bottle of 'intestinal formula' though.  It's too strong for me.  At the time, I still had persistent nausea from chemo, and I was 3 years out by then.  The superfood got RID of my nausea, and it never came back.

Six weeks later, I tried the colon cleanse.  The guidelines for food and beverages were beyond anything I'd attempted.  I just did the cleanse anyway and the only change I made in my diet was giving up meat for 5 days.  It definitely cleaned me out anyway!

In August I tried the liver/gall bladder cleanse.  That time I did follow the instructions on food and drink, nearly 90% compliant.  After that cleanse, I could finally eat pizza again!  Anything with tomato sauce since chemo had given me really bad heartburn.  For three+ years I went without pizza, and now I eat pizza once a week and love every bite.  I swear I could feel my instestines doing a happy dance after that cleanse.  Oh, but those tonics, ugh, blech.  The tea wasn't bad, but those tonics really taste awful.  Even so, I have confidence in the quality of the products.  The doctor who developed the line is passionate about his work, and I find his dedication to quality and providing chemical-free products believable.

Let us know what you choose.  There's a cazillion choices out there these days.  Another place I'm liking is where I get B12 vitamins -- oasisadvancedwellness.com.  The founder of that site is a colon cancer survivor.

I'd agree with lindasa. Your body basically discards the whole lining of the intestines regularly and starts anew. Most of the cleanser nonsense is not founded in good science. Take the corn test.....eat a half cup of kernel corn and see if it's discharged in the next 24 hours....if so your system is probably working just fine, so why mess with it? It's doing your "safe natural cleansing" all by itself already.

I've had excellent results with certain cleanses. The kidney cleanse herbs  (a number of herbs used in a dozen cultures) flushed little white fluffs into my urine. The parasite cleanse also produced some thin worms both times that I've done it.

This got me interested in how different cultures have eaten cleansing foods and herbs for centuries. It's fascinating that some cultures do certain cleanses in the spring when certain bitter greens are available.

My husband did the liver cleanse twice and got rid of his allergy to onions, garlic, tomatoes, banannas and hot peppers. He also has less reflux. Some people say food allergies that produce hives are undigested foods being attacked by the immune system.

I'm trying to get up my nerve to do the liver cleanse now. Thanks, Althea. I love hearing from the veterans here!

It's possible to be eliminating daily and still get a build up on the walls of our colon.  And while our bodies, if they are in balance, do work pretty well, I think anyone who's had chemo, which is not a normal toxic load, can benefit from a liver cleanse.

Alternative doctor, Jon Barron, advocates an annual cleanse.  I haven't tried his products yet, but probably will soon:    http://www.jonbarron.org/    He also has a pretty interesting, extremely well-researched and documented newsletter.

You might also try The Life Extension Foundation.  http://www.lef.org/   Their supplement formulas are very cutting edge, and I think they have a cleansing product.

Let us know what you decide to do, Marin  ~  Deanna

Marin - In January I will be doing a 21 day cleansing. Nothing invasive, will be following a specific diet, taking specific supplements, protein, etc. There's a Back To Nature Clinic near me and the Dr. there will be overseeing the whole process. I will be having a weekly visit during it and we'll discuss it each step of the way. The program is called Standard Process Purification Program. http://www.standardprocess.com/ They have a booklet with recipes in it for the 21 days.

    Also check out http://www.raypeat.com/

Hope all this helps! Good luck!

Thanks, my chicas, for all of the info! I will say that since I began taking probiotics a few months ago (to elevate my immunity to the flu, among other things), my system has been working amazingly well. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it has never been so efficient and I've never felt this "clean"! Anyway, i am thinking about the liver cleanse for the Spring and will check out all of your leads. I just feel that our livers have to process so many toxins and that it could use a little help, especially after chemo asked it to go above-and-beyond the call of duty, ya know?
