I read about this too and it captures my sentiments in a nutshell. If the new guidelines were adopted money would be saved but more women will die.

Hmmm...shouldn't the headline read:  "Former NIH Chief:  Ignore Independent Task Force's Mammography Recommendations"?

Lindasa, no because that wouldn't be as effective at stoking mass hysteria. Innocent

What is really scary is that my Sister in law just recently had her first mammogram done at age 40 and they found a lump that was not detected by manual palpitation.  They told her to come back in a year to see if it had changed, they did not offer her a biopsy.  Is that scary or what?

klfh...The experiances that I have had with the USPSTF is that the new Doctors fresh out of college take them as the bible in the standard of care that is acceptable in patient care.  Maybe a little "Mass hysteria" is in order to save women's lives from this "panel" (their terminology, not mine)

Just a suggestion, and you didn't ask, that your SIL DEMAND an US of the area and if not that a MRI.  I wouldn't wait a year for anything.  I did wait 6 mos for microcals, but not a lump.  if they don't agree, personally, I'd be finding another doc.  JMHO
