Hi, not sure if this thread is still active.  I'm from Mississauga and am new to this message board.

It hasn't been active for a while but it can be re-activated. There are quite a few of us here from Ontario. There are also some other Canadian threads.

Okay, I'll take a look for some of these Canadian threads.  Looking forward to connecting with others from Ontario.  I'm still trying to get my head around the diagnosis as I start appointments with radiation and medical oncologists next week.

    Hi there

I'm new to this cancer thing. I live in Ottawa, 44 yrs old, married with 2 kids (14 and almost 19). Just diagnosed a week or so ago and still waiting to find out for sure what surgery/treatment comes next.  Hope this thread stays alive....it would be nice to compare stories and get advice from fellow Ontarions.

I'm moving back to Ottawa on Dec 01.  I'm seeing Dr. Verma at the Ottawa Cancer Clinic for the first time -- I hear he's nice.

Hi MichelleBoots and Mich_M!  Yes, let's keep this thread alive!  I don't have any BC experience in Canada (been living in Boston the last 3+ years) and I am very much looking forward to getting back to universal healthcare. :-)

Hi Elizabeth....Dr. Verma is the onc for my mother-in-law. I've heard he's easy to talk to and very nice.

Thanks Mich!  I have been nervous about getting a new after 2.5 years -- loved the one I've had.  You've put my mind at ease.

Some of us in the GTA have managed a couple of get togethers. It's nice to get to know each other.

Just wondering if other's have had this experience. I had a mastectomy with immediate tissue expanders. Two hours after I got out of surgery, I was sent home. Luckily my family is not the least bit shy of blood etc, but I was so out of it I don't remember anything other than waking up on the recliner in my family room the next day. I actually think the policy must be governed by each hospital because when I have my tissue expander removed and redone at Princess Margaret, they said I would be staying overnight.

Elizabeth  Welcome back to Canada! We've had no snow (and I live in a snowbelt area) so hopefully December 1 will still be warm and sunny for your big day.

Hi Mantra - wow can't believe you were sent home the day of surgery after a mastectomy!! That can't be normal?? I haven't had my surgery yet, but the thought of going home the same day scares the crap out of me.

Hey Sugar I'm next door to you in Oakville.  Where in Mississauga are you?  I'm in east Oakville, by the Ford Plant.  My family doctor is in Clarkson.

Wow Mantra.  I had my bilat mast at PMH and stayed in overnight.  No expanders as I have to wait two years for recon.  Going home the next day was not a problem.  Same day would have been a big problem.  Mind boggling.

    Hi Sugar,

Another Ontarian here.  If you are new to BC there is a great resource, I don't know if you have heard about it.  It is a charitable organization called Wellspring.  You will probably be closest to the Oakville Wellspring which is at Dundas and 6th line.  They provide peer mentoring, support groups, a library, and a wide selection of programs to help through the journey.   If you can't drive they provide volunteer drivers.  It is a great way to connect with others sharing a similar diagnosis.

Konakat,  I hear good things about Dr. Verma..  I have Dr. Segal for chemo and Dr. Cross for radiation, when ever that starts.

Mantra, I was out the next day, but would have loved to have gone home the same day...The hospital was under construction, nurses talked constantly in the hall, they forgot to feed me, the lady beside me had a 3 year old kid with her and was there until 3am.   Then the cleaning staff came to clean the room at 4am....I didn't sleep until I was home the next day.  What a clown show.

Maybe in the New Year we should organize a coffee/tea get-together and compare note!  I'd love to meet my new Ottawa area friends.

Coffee, tea or perhaps a cocktail??

Konakat- just saw some of your posts and read that you haven't told your Mom yet..wow, I'm amazed that you've gone through this now for 2 years and didn't want to worry her.....you must be one very strong woman! I hope coming home works out well for you.

    Cocktails!  I'm in!!

Thanks Mich -- or one really chicken woman!!  Hahahaha!!  My choices were actually validated today by the social worker at my clinic.  She said about 2 years ago she would encourage me to tell my Mom, now she thinks I should do what's good for my well-being.

A lot of women advise others when telling their Mom to focus on the positive.  Good advice, but I'm Stage IV -- hard to spin that into the positive!  A girlfriend had colon cancer and when it spread to her liver both Mom and I said at the same time "well, she's toast!".  Unfortunately she did die.  My perspective has since changed!  I prefer to think of myself as a slice of bread, not quite yet in the toaster.

It's been hard -- sometimes I've wanted to regress to being a little girl and crawl in my Mom's arms.  Oh well...  I have a strong network of girlfriends in Ottawa, that will help alot.  AND, I lean on a lot on the women on the boards here -- these boards my first lifeline when things get rough.

BMac, I'm from Meadowvale (North/West Mississauga). I work in Oakville, not too far from where you live (Winston Park and Upper Middle). My family doctor is in the office building that shares the parking lot with Credit Valley Hospital, which the hospital where I'll be seeing the radiation and medical oncologists in the coming week.

Molly52m, thanks for suggesting Wellspring. I went and registered there a few weeks ago right after I got the diagnosis at the Oakville location. They were great. I've only been the one time when I registered but do plan to go there more often in the near future.

Sugar, I was wondering what treatment you received being as you are TN as well.  I see that almost everyone on the TN threads have received Chemo - even Stage 0 - and I was told I didn't need it by my rad onc.  Today, I will finally meet with a medical onc to discuss my fears.  I was wondering if in Ontario we follow different protocols??  I live in SW Ontario and go to London Health Sciences - Cancer Clinic.  I had a lumpectomy and 30 rads that ended in Sept.  Thanks for any info!

    Michele, I'm south of Manotick.

Hey an Ottawa get together sounds like fun.

Elizabeth, a friend of mine had Dr. V and she really liked him.

Manotick!  My sister lives in the 'tick.  When you go into Ottawa you probably drive by where my father's farm was along the Rideau River.   Funny how we met here and have such a (geographic) connection!
