The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) announced that it is changing its guidelines for mammography and no longer recommends routine screening for women between the ages of 40 and 49.

In response, The American Cancer Society has stood its ground, publicly rejecting the USPSTF's guidlines. Here is The ACS's official statement: "The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screening using mammography and clinical breast examination for all women beginning at age 40. Our experts make this recommendation having reviewed virtually all the same data reviewed by the USPSTF, but also additional data that the USPSTF did not consider. When recommendations are based on judgments about the balance of risks and benefits, reasonable experts can look at the same data and reach different conclusions."

This is for those who believe the "risk" of 1900 women receiving preventative mammograms in order to save 1 woman's life is not too great.

I am the 1......I was 43 when diagnosed with stage 2b bc...If I had waited til I was 50 I would probably have a much poorer outcome......My sister is the 1.....She was diagnosed stage 3b at age 47.....If she had waited til she was 50 she would not be here..........My mother and grandmother both lost their lives to bc......Mom was only 52...My grandmother, bless her heart, lived into her early 70's.....

I found my cancer throuh BSE. I did it a lot and I thought that they are always lumpy so I would never be able to tell. When I felt the cancer it was actually a thickening. I knew right away something was wrong because I had been doing it all along. If you know your body you can tell. Why should women be told not to do this? I am 44, I have a very small child. Under the new guidelines I would have no chance.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women 40 - 55 years old.

8 of 9 people diagnosed have no family history.

70% have no risk factors other then being women.

I am 1 in 1900.
