Hello wondering about my pathology report. MRI and ammo say size of tumor is 8 cm x 5 cm x 2 cm. Pathology report says 3 cm tumor surrounded by dcis . Is this possible? Should we use the 8 cm as staging size? Thx

I think you are staged on the size of your largest invasive tumor and node status.  I had a 4.4 cm IDC, surrounded by 4.5 DCIS, and I also had two smaller IDC's  elsewhere, plus an ILS.  No node involvement,so the path reports lists me as stage II.  (T2, NO, MX) My oncologist said "no less" than stage II but he had not yet seen the path report.  I've googled, and it seems the largest invasive is what they go by.

I'll clarify with my onc next time I see him but I will consider myself stage II unless told otherwise.

    :)

I think it is actually pretty common to be dx with both IDC and DCIS.  I was with my intial cancer diagnosis.

Sometimes the cancer has a lot of spread within the ducts but only a small amount breaks out to form an invasive tumor. The size of the invasive tumor determines the risk of recurrence and the benefit of therapy to prevent it. Therefore, the stage is based on the size of the invasive bit.
